She contends that anyone who stays “too long” has no life and should move on and stop considering themselves a Bariatric patient 🤷🏼‍♀️

Probably bc eggs don’t agree with a lot of us for a while. It took me several months before I could tolerate them even though they were allowed during mushy food stage at 3 weeks.

Got it, thanks! I thought there might have been some discrimination or something like with Cracker Barrel!

Not to get political but all I can find is that in & out donated 25k to the Republican Party and then the guy who called for the boycott rescinded the call bc he found they had donated to a lot of other causes.

Is there more I am missing?

What Matt said. You burn about 100 calories per MILE. (Regardless of how fast, you just burn the calories faster running than walking.)

Are you walking three miles? If not then the 300 calories of wine is more than you are burning walking. Just sayin.

Thanks for the thoughtful and thorough response! Cross training and slow and steady will always be part of my training plan for any race, but I’m not willing to wait until I’m at 200lbs to jog/run. I’ve done plenty of 5K races walking and doing combination of jogging/walking, and working toward events and tracking my paces is a major motivation for me in both cardio and strength training. Jogging/running is something I’ve enjoyed every time I’ve been more in shape, even though I have been around 250lbs at minimum! I’ll keep what you said in mind and maybe I’ll kick myself later, but I’m going to be working up to jogging/running as soon as I can along with the strength and cross training!

Thanks for your perspective! I find the races and working toward that kind of thing highly motivating which is why I asked! I was doing plenty of jogging at 250lbs and really enjoy it so I don’t want to wait until I’m under 200lbs to start...

I am going to do a 5K this fall and go from there! Thanks!!

On the other hand I’d never run a mile in my life outside of high school PE. Started couch to 5k four weeks after my sleeve surgery (SW 271) at age 44. Ran my first half marathon 9 months later. Still at it and have plenty more and some full marathons under my belt too. Running a trail half tomorrow. I’m five years post of and maintaining a 135ish loss.

Sleeved 5 years ago at 44. Beyond thrilled. 271 to 135 ish. Couldn’t walk around the block without getting winded, now I run marathons. I didn’t even do that when I was 20.

This will not be popular but I would put the wine away. At only three weeks post op you are not able to eat enough to meet your nutritional needs. Alcohol has zero nutritional value whatsoever.
I am eight months post op and eat between 800-900 calories a day. I cannot imagine 30 percent if my intake coming from alcohol. It isn’t all about calories, it is about what you feed your body too.
    Good luck on your journey!

What do you consider a lot?

    This study says 9%—

    https://www.mdedge.com/familypracticenews/article/80250/gastroenterology/sleeve-gastrectomy-often-worsens-gerd

And this study agrees, about 9% but it shows the same 9% with bypass! It’s a smallish sample.  I don’t have time to look for more this morning, though just sending the top results.

But, doesn’t seem like a lot to me. Just seems like those are the ones who speak up. Just like people who speak about a restaurant. It’s not the ones who had a good meal—it’s the ones who had an amazing once in a lifetime meal or the opposite.

I think it’s best to look at studies that include random samples for a better picture, like the article posted above that shows only 2.5% of sleeves being revised.

Not saying that they are extremes but they are by definition self selected as posters and not a cross section.

Exactly my point. That seems pretty low to me! Certainly not high enough to suggest the procedure might be self sabotage/not choosing the best procedure.

Who do you hear that from? Medical studies show the gherlin reduction is real and the restriction is permanent.

That said, there are people whose appetite is not controlled by the reduction in gherlin. Responses to the surgery varies and sadly we can’t tell who will respond which way. Hopefully one day Science will advance to the point where we can better tailor surgery choice to the individual.

And I will say, I am very careful with my carbs. Carbs can trigger appetite and binge-y feelings for me and a lot of carbs upset my stomach—I can’t eat bread or rice especially—and sugar makes me feel ill (not full on dumping but icky).

Honestly I don’t know because I’m not there. I don’t think anyone can predict accurately what choices they would make in circumstances they aren’t in.

But based on my avoidance of other forms of surgery for decades when I was obese, probably not. But maybe now that I know what it’s like to live life at a normal weight that would motivate me. But I think there are far more people who don’t regain large amounts of weight with the sleeve than there are those who do. These boards see more of those who regain for obvious reasons.

I also have developed new ideas since my weight loss. Most of us had surgery for our health. The first pounds we lost were Health pounds. Then many of us go on to lose more weight and that I call vanity pounds. Usually the regain is of those vanity pounds and we tend to forget how many of the health pounds are still gone and beat ourselves up over the vanity pounds.

I honestly don’t think people should fret too much about the regain of vanity pounds. That’s pretty much... normal. All people do it as they age, whether they have a history of obesity or not. So I believe I would consider that normal and work to lose it as any normal person does.

Exactly this. We can’t tell ahead of time what surgery will work for whom. Hopefully one day science will advance enough that we will have better predictors.

I chose the sleeve because I didn’t want the possible nutritional deficiencies that a bypass is more likely than a sleeve to leave you with. I also wasn’t comfortable with the increased risk of other side effects that both DS and RNY have over the sleeve.

I had considered RNY for almost a decade and had never been convinced because of the risks and side effects. As soon as a learned about the sleeve I knew that was something I could get behind.

I was a binge eater. Obese from early on. Snacky slider foods were my jam. As I’ve said I still can’t let Cheez its in my house.

The sleeve has worked wonderfully for me for five years.

That’s actually true. They have done studies that show people who are 10% over their ideal body weight actually live the longest.

I lost more than 100%. Started 271 and ended 135. I’m 5’6” I’ve kept it off 5 years and counting.

5'3" (or 5'4" long story) 250lbs at consult (but down over 100lbs from highest weight ever 270) down 89lbs so far
Tentative goal of 150, currently 160
I think its better than average for VSG

Thanks lady!! ((hugs)) I do feel so much better than I did 120lbs ago, that's for sure. But I feel like I can do better and feel even better if I continue the journey.
I just think now is the time (if any) to really push to get those answers. DO I feel better at 130 or 140? I could never answer that question for myself before. You know?

Not my experience. I have a sleeve and I do IF here and there for various reasons. It’s not about not eating all day, it’s about limiting the window during which you eat. Say an 8 hour window and then fast the other 16. So if you delay your first “meal” till 10am and have your last meal at 6 you’re good. That’s what I do when I do IF. And it doesn’t make me any hungrier than any other time. I still stop when I’m full.

A lot of vets do it for regain and it works quite well!

I think it’s important to remember message board posters are not representative of the population. People who post and look for validation or complain are a specific type. Sorta like how people who review a restaurant or hotel or whatever on yelp usually had a strong reaction—positive or negative—and you don’t hear the silent majority.
