That's because every new wave of patients & forum members brings a deluge of fragile or hostile people who don't want information and talk from members with experience. They want validation, *hugs*, and immediate results/responses.
In my opinion as an older member, you can only take the verbal lashing and emotional outbursts for so long before you just don't care about helping anyone. Escalating and explosive replies with the sole purpose of shocking or generating more knee jerk responses has become the norm across all social media as long as it is done in the name of social justice.
I can say that I have seen so many of these people come on here and spout off, gather a group of sycophants, then fade away because they have wasted the honeymoon phase and never established their own healthy habits. They never reach goal, they develop a transfer addiction, they gain it all back, they develop a new eating disorder... I've pretty much seen it all. Why should a vet invest time to help people when they don't want to be helped?

Plenty of us who eat that way aren’t retainers either though. It’s not a road that’s doomed to fail.

I think as we study and learn more we will be able to tell by your genes who will do well on what diet. But we are still in the dark ages.

There isn’t any one size fits all. I did the high carb low fat diets in the 90’s and those always ended in me falling off the wagon and regaining. I was quite strict on the low carb train till I got to goal. I’m still pretty low carb but I don’t stress about them a bit here and there.

I’m five year out and it works just great for me.

I know your plan is working for you (so far). Can’t we just all realize that there is no one size fits all answer? I know you’re certain your plan will be the answer for you. And time will tell, but since I think a big part of this is mental, I think it will.

But you make it sound like being a “carb nazi” means you’re doomed to fail.

I didn’t.  It’s not a stop gap measure for me.  It’s a lifestyle change and it works just fine.

Regardless of genetics (my husband is genetically a beanpole so who knows where my kids will end up) no Kid NEEDS the crap that is the Standard American Diet (SAD).

My whole family changed when I had surgery. Sure my 15 year old still goes to In and Out with his buddies and orders pizza once in a while. Heck I even buy him Cheetos now and then. But none of that is a daily thing anymore. Nothing is forbidden, I just don’t buy it it’s not in the House. They eat what I eat plus some whole grains and fruits and Pasta and whatnot. Why not?

And as for caring with food... it can be done, but it’s a balance. Perfect example... when my little sister was about five she pulled on the cord of an Iron and brought it down on her forehead, needed some stitches. After the hospital trip Mom said “let’s go get some ice cream to make it feel better.” Well we did. Guess what? My sister looked at the cone and had a weird look on her face. She raised the ice cream to her forehead and smashed it onto her newly stitched up cut. Well, how else would it make it feel better? That’s rational!

BTW that sister probably weighs more than 300lbs right now. Genetics? Maybe. Probably even. But not completely.

Different people have different plans and even for people with the same plan different things work.

I can’t eat a lot of carbs or I want more carbs. Plain and simple. My surgeon is OK with people adding carbs back in at goal IF they can maintain with them. I gain if I open the door too wide. You will have to figure what works for you.

For me it’s no bread, Pasta (except for chickpea or edamame pasta once a month or so) no potatoes (white or otherwise) no rice (white or otherwise). If I’m running 6+ miles I have have some fruit or oatmeal. I can sprinkle a tablespoon of cocoa nibs or unsweetened coconut on my yogurt or some berries.

But yeah, low carb. I have Beans or ancient grains maybe once or twice a week. A cookie or few bites of cake or a couple of French fries a couple times a month. I’m not that rigid but they aren’t a regular part of my diet. I didn’t “add them back in” they are a very once in a while treat.

I just don’t think there’s any place for name calling. If you truly think someone is a bully (and you seem to be good at searching people’s history so you can easily find out what I think about slinging the name “bully” around—in brief I think it’s an over used ad hominem attack) then perhaps you shouldn’t call people names.

It’s also against the rules to personally attack like that.

I can disagree with someone and not resort to that. Even if I think they were inappropriate, it’s no reason to stoop to that level. You lose your own credibility.

I mean here you are, supposedly on my side of this argument, and I wish you weren’t.

Yes when you read carefully I know that’s what you SAID. But people don’t always read carefully and skim so I wanted to clarify. I wanted to put it out there that low carb does work for many.

Some it doesn’t. I think there are people who regain from many camps and I honestly don’t think there are more of them from the low carb camp. I don’t have statistics but I would love to see any you know of. Posters on this board don’t present a balanced view of the population.

It’s interesting to think about! As a whole are we more successful because we seek out more information, are more committed and more knowledgeable? Are we less successful because as a whole because we spend more time on our computers and smart phones than getting exercise? Are people who post more or less successful than people who lurk and just read (because most internet boards are more lurkers than posters). More successful because we have a “support group?” Less successful because it’s online and because it doesn’t have the safeties in place an in person one has (I mean let’s be real, people don’t “say” these kinds of things in person).

I’m just pulling random possibilities out of the air because who knows.

Oh I think luck is definitely a factor in success... I think one day we will have a lot more science and be able to figure out what works for whom and tailor diet and surgery type (or no surgery) based on scientific principle, but for now luck is a huge part of it. I consider myself VERY lucky to have responded so well to my surgery and diet.

BUT I feel like luck would be evenly represented among posters here and lurkers here and the general population. Cuz, ya know, it’s luck!

Trying to figure out population characteristics and chance events are usually controlled for across different populations and selection groups. Yeah I was a statistics minor.

Vegetables... well I avoid corn, peas and all forms of potatoes, white or otherwise. Cruciferous ones don’t agree with me unless they are way mushy and then ick l. Same with carrots. So I do a lot of leaves of all varieties... lettuces, spinach, kale, cabbage and arugula. I also do bell peppers, snap peas and cucumbers (Armenian are my favorite). I can do a small amount of shredded carrots in my salad or in Cole slaw (huge favorite in our house and I make several varieties of homemade dressing). Lots of onions, mushrooms, celery, squash, cilantro, avocados (I do live in California after all). And whatever I see at farmers market—boy choy this week!
