I have so enjoyed reading about your journey. My surgery is Nov 19, but more Dr appts to go. It is so helpful to see what your experiences are and how you are managing. It is very much appreciated.

1 week check in was today. Dr. says everything looks great. I am down 18 lbs since surgery last week, 25 since I started the cabbage Soup diet the week before surgery. Got my staples taken out and the nurse says my cuts look well enough that I should end up with tiny scars. Next appointment is in 3 weeks, and everything is moving along fine.
And.....drum roll.........I am getting ready to have some mashed potatoes (sans butter). Exciting!

You have to like coconut (which I do) and DISHWATER (which I don't) because that is what it tastes like.

I am going to add some info, and I will probably add more later.
I am 36 years old, morbidly obese, and a type II diabetic. At my heaviest, I weighed around 380 lbs. More recently, I have been hovering around 300 lbs, but my diabetes has been virtually uncontrollable.
So, I decided in late August 2013 to attempt to qualify to have gastric bypass surgery. Long story short, and in what seems to be a miracle giving some other peoples experiences with doctors, insurance, etc, I was approved to have surgery on Oct. 1st.
I am writing this post as one of the first things I am doing since returning home today from the hospital.
My surgery went extremely well and I am fairly mobile with only a moderate level of discomfort/pain.
During my first day at the hospital (the day of surgery), I took two separate walks around the hospital, (one about a third of a mile, one about two thirds of a mile). During my second day, I took a one mile walk, and a one and a half mile walk). Everything I have read on the internet and gotten from my doctor has made it clear the best thing I can do to get this process to work is to walk as soon and as much as is possible, and that is what I have been doing.
I am so stoked for this process and I am going to do everything I can to make this work. I owe a lot of credit to this board, which I have been reading (but not posting in) for the past month or so as I researched what this would be like.
I look forward to using this forum to document my journey.

I went to my 6 day post op appt today and was down 11 pounds. The first 3 days were tough but today has been the best. It's no picnic, but I know it's the best decision. So glad to have met you all and have that extra support!!!

I know I won't have to complain about this too long, but I hate sleeping on my back. I am a belly sleeper and obviously that is not working right now.

I will remember to take my pain meds before I go. one pill is nice, 2 pills and they could use an office staple remover and I wouldn't care.

Don't sweat the emotional roller coaster.
You are not alone.
When those fat cells are forced to give up their Water a lot of hormones are released as well. Sometimes you can't even stand yourself it gets so bad.
Just acknowledge it and apologize to the people you live with for being a bear. It's totally normal.

It may just take some time for your body to adjust after surgery! I did not have diabetes my blood sugar was normal before surgery.. After surgery starting the night my RNY was done my blood sugar kept dropping to around 35-45 which from what I overheard the nurses saying is very dangerous ! So for about a month or more post op I had to check my blood every 2-3 hours to make sure it didn't drop below 60! Point is maybe your body just needs some time to readjust to the changes! But I do know the more you loose and not eating carbs and sugar will definitely help! Good luck, and its ok to have an emotional letdown... I do all the time ; )

Went back, read this, and realized I was being a whiny baby earlier today. Does it suck that i didn't get exactly what I wanted? Yes. Does it mean this was a waste? Not at all.
My diabetes may still go away on its own as all of the new connections are still healing together. But, even if it doesn't, I can beat the diabetes by taking off the weight and by continuing to eat healthy.
By the way, I love this website and this community.

26lbs in a week or 26 lbs since starting your preop diet? If it is 26lbs in a week, did they take out parts of you while they were in there doing surgery?
