mamafine23 got a reaction from ProudGrammy in DO YOU THINK THE SURGERY WAS WORTH IT?
I regretted it right after because of all the pain and I literally did not think i would mourn food but I did. It was the Spring and I couldn’t enjoy food and never realized how much of an impact food had on my social life. Needless to say as time went on , it did get better. I had only minor complication of an ulcer and for the most part over the last 5 years it has been ok although having doctors keep you on a Vitamin regimen so that you your not anemic has been a challenge. Over the last year I noticed I was having issues with food getting stuck and throwing up and finally went in for an EGD, turns out I had a hiatel hernia and needed a partial gastrectomy . Had that on 9/19 and I was put on a clear liquid diet for 2 weeks. I am so sorry for what you have been going though and for those of you whom had severe complications , I think sometimes it’s all about the surgeon , the support staff , and the follow up the helps us recover. There are also genetic and hereditary factors that are beyond our control. I would so do it again . I started out 5 years ago at 298. I have been maintaining 178 -182 for 2 years . Because of the recent liquid diet, I’m at 170 . Good luck and prayers for everyone

Hi there , I had my surgery in March of 2013 and lost 100lbs in 9 months. I lost so much weight they actually wanted me to gain weight . I am in the same position you are with what I can’t eat but what I can eat isn’t very healthy. People think I’m crazy when I say I can’t eat greens , certain fruits , and meats. You are not alone.

I was at 18 months post op and 9 months consistent with my weight when they did my panilectomy. I definitely recommend getting it down when you are at your goal weight and you have continued to stay the same weight.

    Hi,
I am 3 years out from gastric bypass and I still have issues with Water. I drink Powerade zero , Lipton unsweetened ice tea , and use injury unflavored in my orange juice. I wish I could drink more Water but every time I have tried to just drink plain water , it makes me nautious. To some people it sounds strange . I still try , but in small sips. I may get 8 oz of plain water in a day .

    @@Proud2BMe,
Yes, it is definitely depressing to see their regain, but I think we can learn from it (I didn’t see it, but I have heard about it). The initial response is “What happened?!” and I think it’s a good question to try to answer. The more we can recognize in them, the more we can try to recognize in ourselves and avoid those same mistakes that led to regain.
Like the others said, don’t forget about the difference in starting weight between you and them. If someone on the show lost 400 pounds and regained 60 pounds, that’s a regain of 15%. If you lost 170 lbs and gained back 15%, you’d gain back 25 lbs – not ideal, but not insurmountable. You could lose it again if you wanted to.
Also, I think the show is a good reminder that this is hard for everyone. Even though the show participants were “famous” and presumably had good support, it hasn’t been easy for them. It’s a good reminder to not feel sorry for ourselves and wish we were in someone else’s shoes.
So yes, it is sad they didn’t all keep all of their weight off, but there are some valuable lessons here.

Congrats... You are right on track and it will be about 3-4 weeks before you might sleep on your side... It will hurt because they do most of the work in the incision on your left side. The pain is normal and Celebrex works wonders for the pain...

I am so sorry for you and your family on what you have gone through....at this point the original surgeon should be held liable and everyone that was involved, that is such a huge malpractice suit...if anything I hope that things will turn around....I researched and researched when I decided on the dr who was to do my surgery and I knew some of his previous patients ....
Stay strong and know SSD always denies on the first time and if you have to find a good lawyer who deals with disability cases and only gets paid if u get approved... Good luck

I've read on here on numerous occasions that GERD is a big side effect of the sleeve. I've also seen a lot of people get revised from the sleeve to the bypass. The band doesn't seem that great. People do have success with it, but I've read where a lot of people also get revisions to it as well.
Ultimately, the bypass is considered the gold standard and is the more known about surgery. It's more proven to be able to help improve comorbidities.
I weighed the sleeve and bypass (don't like the idea of the band), but ultimately chose bypass.

Hi my names is Kelly. I had the gastric sleeve done march 2013. I had a hiatel hernia and they stated that the only option I had was the bypass because the lap band has many issues and lots of people end up with complications or going to bypass because they don't lose enough weight . With the bypass , they fixed my hiatel hernia and I lost 100lbs in 9 months ... Didn't have any complications other than a mild ulcer and I do have some foods that I still cannot eat but when it comes down to it . Best decision ...my husband had the gastric sleeve and it helped him tremendously except , u stop losing and your kind of stuck ... He lost 150.00 and still has 90 more to get him to the healthy weight for his height .. He had the surgery 4 years ago ...it all depends on you and what your goal is. Good luck

I am 18 months out and the no sugar and fat free after surgery is so that your body heals ... Your body doesn't work the same after surgery and if you eat something or drink something that has high in fat and sugar it could cause dumping and lots of pain... Stick with the sugar free and fat free for the first 2 months and then you can start adding it back in with moderation ... You will realize soon enough if you took in too much sugar because the side effects are dumping , suds, and severe nausea ...I'm on my fitness pal if u want to add me , take care

mamafine23 reacted to JJ Schlic in psych evaluation!?
I was diagnosed with depression several years ago, and put on medication. The medication did wonders for me, but when I went to my pre-op psych evaluation, the Dr was not impressed with treating solely with medications. The Dr suggested that I seek more counseling before and after my surgery, so that I could dig to the core of my depression, and see how it might affect my use of food as a way of either self medication, or self punishment. I was on the defensive the first couple of sessions, and by the 3rd session I decided to be more open to what the therapist was saying. By my forth session I really felt that she had dug into some issues and feelings that I had hid from myself for a very long time. It isn't easy to face those things, but I realize that those things are in the past, and I shouldn't let them dictate my present or future. I am day 5 post-op, and have plans to have periodic appointments with my therapist, to help me stay on track. I view the therapy sessions as just one more very important tool, in this process.

mamafine23 reacted to Kindle in Changing how I consume my protein
So I've noticed there's been a few comments about how we can only absorb 20 grams of Protein at a time and the rest is just wasted. I never really looked into that until now. A quick google search revealed we actually absorb even less than that....
    "Protein Absorption Rate in Humans
    July 6, 2007
According to this study, A Review of Issues of Dietary Protein Intake in Humans, written by Shane Bilsborough and Neil Mann, it states…
Absorption rates of amino acids from the gut can vary from 1.4 g/h for raw egg white to 8 to 10 g/h for whey protein isolate. Slowly absorbed amino acids suchas casein (~ 6 g/h) and repeated small doses of whey protein (2.9 g per 20 min, totaling ~ 7 g/h) promote leucine balance, a marker of protein balance, superior tothat of a single dose of 30 g of whey protein or free amino acids which are both rapidly absorbed (8 to 10 g/h), and enhance amino acid oxidation.
Quite interesting. It drives home the point that eating smaller portioned meals of less than 15-10 grams of protein is optimal. It also tells us that ingesting 40 grams of protein whey for post-workout drink is not only a waste of money as it gets excreted or is converted into carbs and then stored as body fat, among other things."
...there's a bunch more papers and articles that pretty much repeat these same stats.
So up until now I thought I was doing pretty good on my protein goals because I always have 1 mega Protein shake (40g protein 24-32oz fluid) every morning, usually taking 1-2 hours to drink it. According to the articles, I MIGHT be utilizing 1/2 or less of that protein. So I am going to split my shake in two and drink half in the morning and the other 1/2 later in the afternoon. Guess I'll just alternate taking drinks of Water to make the shake last at least an hour and a half. I'm not too worried about my food protein intake since my meals/snacks are so small anyways and are probably under the 10g mark.
Anyways, I thought this was a very valuable tidbit and wanted to share.
