KellyLessBelly got a reaction from Believeinnikki in Beginning My Journey
My journey has been life-long. I was overweight as a young child, medically obese by around age 7. Should you choose to read on, you will get a glimpse of the factors that contributed to my struggle in comforting myself with food and attempting to render myself unattractive.
I had been through the tumultuous divorce of my parents and felt abandoned by my father at age 6. Within a year of my parents' divorce, I was molested by an adult male friend of the family. A few years later, I was molested by an older boy, another family friend.
As a teen, searching for love and male attention to fill the hole in my heart, I began a sexual relationship with my boyfriend at 15. I became pregnant within a year and decided to abort my child. I believed the lies of the abortion industry, that it was a painless procedure, that my baby was just a "clump of cells," and went through with the abortion. Immediately afterwards, I knew I could never go through with, or put myself in that position EVER AGAIN!
This is when I really saw my weight balloon, in what I now see was an effort to make myself undesirable by men. If no one was attracted to me, I wouldn't have sex, so I couldn't get pregnant, and would never again face abortion. This is when I graduated to morbid obesity. I had gained around 80 pounds within a year.
My family excused the weight gain by comparing me to other family members who were large. It seemed natural to them, that because I was becoming a woman and there was a family history of obesity, the weight gain was unavoidable. No one relized that I was filling an emotional hole with food.< /span> No one saw the isolating behaviors I was exhibiting.
Thirteen years later, at age 29, after having had four children, married and divorced, I had come to know God and started a process of recovery from all of my past hurts. Since then, layer upon layer of pain has been peeled away, and I am truly a new person!
I won't say that the weight is the last thing I need to peel away, but I can say that I am ready to work on this part of me now! I had thought about gastric bypass many times over the years, since 1999, but never with the healing behind me and the mindset I have now. For me, shedding this weight is symbolic of breaking free from the shackles of all the pain that was holding me back.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story!

Thanks to those who commented on my update! I am beginning to feel really great! I spent the day shopping at an outlet mall with a friend yesterday and added a few items to my wardrobe. It was actually fun! I used to loathe shopping for clothes. Now, I can shop in almost any store and that feels amazing!

KellyLessBelly got a reaction from SnowDaisy in Struggling...is it too late?
It is not too late! You might not be able to exercise like you used to, but you can do something and you can change your eating habits TODAY!!! This is the good news. The bad news is that it sounds like you are struggling with mind over matter and possibly some depression. Many people with physical pain suffer depression and need therapy and sometimes medication to get through it. You may want to consider getting help with this. We were not created to handle our issues alone! I was so glad to read that it was 18lbs and not hundreds. You can do this!!!

I am NOT looking forward to the saggy skin either. I just hope that I will look decent enough to feel comfortable in clothing! I definitely don't think that this surgery will boost my confidence about my body, but I am not doing it for looks. This is for my health, my life, ME, not the visual pleasure of anyone else

Where are all of the July post ops? We seem to be a quiet bunch. I'm doing well. I'm down 56 pounds since the start of this journey and my pouch seems to be ok with just about everything I eat. I need to increase exercise though. I'm having trouble with my ankle and knees so it makes it a challenge. How is everyone else doing?

Kellylessbelly---I was doing well right after surgery. 2 weeks then the n/v started. It continues to date. After being in the hospital for the fifth time and more scans. The Dr finally put a label on it such as gastropersis. Where my pouch is very slow to empty into my sm intestines also empty slowly. Now I wear a scolpolmine patch that helps me get rid of the nausea. The Dr says this will go away in about 3-6 months and my taste should come back in the same amount of time. I had my surgery May 1 st. Good luck. It does get better.

So my period has been totally unchanged by surgery...started on schedule 2 weeks post op, pretty normal, bleeding and cramping nothing out of the ordinary....started using the nuvaring about 2 months post-op so now I have almost no period. Woohoo! Just wanted to share that for any pre-op folks that were reading this thread thinking OMG IT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE?!?!? Not everyone, but it does sound like a pretty good chunk of folks have some hormone changes!

Here is my pizza stuffed zucchini I made last night. Of course I could only eat about 1/4 of it but great leftovers! I sliced a zucchini from our garden, scooped the seeds out to make a boat shape. Then put a couple tablespoons of fresh puréed tomatoes also from the garden, sprinkled a little feta and LF mozzarella with some Italian seasoning, topped with quartered Turkey pepperoni. Bake at 375 for 30 mins! Soft and delicious. Great pizza alternative.

Funny, the program I had my surgery from actually led with the surgery complications and mortality statistics both from their practice and nation wide. The hospital I had my surgery in started doing them in the 70's so they had years worth of data. The initial information session was extremely sobering, and I was grateful for the information.
