Read nutrition labels. meal plan before you go shopping. Get with you Dr. Registered dietition...that is their job to guide you to getting a well balanced bariatric diet. Talk to them about Probiotics. Most stores have gluten free areas or sections now.

I had the rny. Best decision ever!! My surgeon only does rny or band. My orthopedic surgeon said no to the band because of my history of mersa and I am facing a knee replacement down the road. Regardless of the surgery you have to follow the diet and exercise plan they give you. I don't know anyone who didn't experience ups and downs prior to surgery. There were ups and downs post surgery also. I'd I had it to do again...The only thing I would change would be waiting so long to have it done. I am just shy of 2 years post surgery. 4 yrs. From my top weight...at my son's wedding. I am down 135 from that day. I have lost a whole woman! My quality of life has improved immeasurably. I can slide down slides with my grandson. I can dance for hours. I am comfortable on the back of a motorcycle! For the first time ever I know I am a sexy vibrant woman. You will always be able to find people who have struggled post surgery...my experience with them is that it is their inability to follow direction. Stick with those that are having success. That's what I am doing.

I think everyone in our shoes can relate to having a sick relationship with food. I wonder if you can redefine success as having a healthy relationship with food and being healthy. I was bulimic for over fifteen years, in recovery for twenty. I am in therapy, and I probably will need support for life. What I've learned is that purging and other unhealthy food behaviors are not about food at all...that's just the symptom. My bulimia was about me not knowing how to deal with my feelings, good or bad. I came from a dysfunctional family who did not deal with feelings in a normal way, so I had to learn how to feel my feelings and not stuff them My therapist's concern with the surgery was that , while it us a great weight loss tool it also forces a restricted eating pattern, so I eat as normally as possible in the restricted parameters of my new lifestyle: regular meal times, scheduled Snacks, food logging, etc. This makes me eat more or less like a " normal" person in an abnormal situation. But support us crucial....professional support. I urge you to contact your team so they can guide you to a good therapist and support system. You are worth it! We're here for you, but we're not professionals, and opinions are often times well intentioned, but misguided...after all, they're only opinions from lay people. Please look into getting help...we care, and we want the best for yiu.

I'm 71 and now have bat wings and of course very loose tummy muscles. Toning up these are not probably an option even though I can try. Surgery could be a possibility as my surgeon also does tummy tucks but does not do bat wings. Since I like new clothes I can cover the bat wings, and buy Spanx for the other. My main goal was to increase my life span, as in 2009 they said it would be a matter of time (apx 5 years) before I threw a pulmonary embolism. I had to give my lungs and heart more room so I had to lose all the weight I had gained (100 lbs). So I actually am of the age spanx are cheap, Zulily has cheap blouses and for the cost of the surgery, I can have a new wardrobe for a few years. Even though I have another 36 lbs to lose, there isn't a day go by that I don't get at least compliment at how I look. The rewards are great and the best is HEALTH.

I felt the same way. I had days when it was all I could do not to call my surgeon and back out. In fact, even on the operating table before they put me to sleep, if just one person would have asked me if I was sure I wanted to go through with it, I would have answered no. I actually remembering praying that no one would give me an out.
The fact is that without the surgery, I would still be morbidly obese. I was in a size 24, always tired, always moody, and hit my emotions in food. Now six months later, I'm in a size 10, so much healthier, so much happier, and I'm learning how to feel emotions instead of bury them. I have loose skin in my stomach and arms. And you know what? I don't care. I'm 33 and would love to be firm. But every bit of loose skin is worth how I feel now. Dave did an amazing job pointing out the health benefits, but those aside, just the way I feel inside is worth it all.

Obesity is a progressive, life-threatening disease that is the number two cause of preventable death in the U.S. Gastric bypass surgery is the most effective treatment known to medical science for the treatment of obesity, type 2 diabetes and more than 30 comorbidities associated with obesity. By a very wide margin.
I had 130 lbs to lose. And I lost 130 lbs. And I was considerably older than you are. Perhaps you're asking the wrong question? The question is not did you wait too long. The question is are you ready to do whatever is necessary to change your life? To dramatically improve your health? To quite literally extend your life? To dramatically improve your quality of life? Is the cost of doing nothing - reduced quality of life, low self esteem, progressive disease, reduced life span - worth the benefits - no "mudflaps and flapjacks"? Is the cost of surgery - "mudflaps and flapjacks" - worth the benefits?
There are a lot of folks right here on this forum that will tell you the answer to that last question is an unqualified, indisputable - "YES"!!
You're gonna love the new you!!

Interesting that my surgeon defers to my NUT when I ask anything about diet. They don't always agree, but he basically says, 'Go by whatever she tells you.'

Last night I bought a new pair of high heeled, to the knee leather boots to wear with skirts. In the past I always had to buy the 'extended calf' ones. I bought the normal ones and one pair I tried on were even too big in the calf. On top of that I got them 30% off. Yay!!

My surgery was 4/2012. The ONLY thing I count is grams of Protein. I still use the shakes...ungery...for Breakfast. It is the only way I get breakfast. It also give me 8 oz of Fluid and 1/2 my protien requirement for the day. Tada! The biggest thing that helps me feel energetic and less depressed is increased Vitamin D. My GP runs a full blood panel...focusing on iron...D...Bs. Remember the days are getting shorter. Stay hydrated! So important for everything. Get with your gp to run your blood work and work with your nutritionist. Journal your food. One of the biggest helps has been support group. If your surgeon/program offers it take advantage of it. Ups and downs are normal. some of the changes are scary. Some fun. Some exciting. Having to try on pants with no w after the size freaked me out!! That was 3 sizes ago. Seek help if you need it.

It's never ever too late! This is a lifestyle not a diet. In a lifestyle, you're going to LIVE. You're going to eat too much fudge at Christmas time, you're going to reach for that pizza instead of grilled chicken sometimes, and you'll never be perfect. I know I'm not. Just make sure you're living as healthfully as possible every day so the day you DO cheat, you know it won't be a huge deal. The key is not to live your life "cheating". That's how we got to the surgery in the first place. I was always so jealous of this girl I went to high school with. She's always been naturally thin and GORGEOUS! I would see her out with her friends drinking beer and having yummy treats on FB and just hate her! Lol now that she and I are friends on My Fitness Pal, I see that not only does she work out almost every day, but she also eats healthfully 80% of the time, but DOES enjoy a treat here and there. I'm trying to model myself after her now. Just remember-- everything in moderation! You're going to be just fine!

Speaking of new clothes... Has anyone noticed they need to buy smaller shoes? I wore a pair of boots last night from last winter.. They were too big in the calves, no biggie i tucked my jeans into them. But as the night went on my feet started to hurt and I think it is because the shoes are now too wide for my feet... crazy! Time for new boots!

If I am reading your posts correct the reason you vomit is so that you have control.
If that is the case there are other ways to take control. The one I use and it is working is to log my food. I know what I am putting in my body everyday. Before I started logging I had no idea, and a quick snack of sweets was common. Now that I log I challenge myself to reach a goal everyday. Sometimes I focus on Protein and sometimes I focus on calories, but I make sure to stay focused and thus gain control

OH NO I do NOT want to strip naked in the OR LOLOLOLOL For IChatman:
ok let me see... the disection of the stomach is done by a tool - it looks like a duck's bill. It is a medical stapler that has 6 rows of TINY staples (titanium) with a knife inbetween. I got to play with the stapler! It looks like a futuristic ray gun to be honest. It's about 18" long with the "duck's bill" on the end. It does ALL the work for the doctor in disection. When he places that to the area he is going to "cut", it cuts AND seals both the old and new stomach simultaneously. Thus there is no abilty for the stomach to leak.... although it can, but it really shouldn't during or after the procedure.
Since we are doing some forms of liquid dieting pre-op, and we do a bowel cleanse thing and then not eating a while before surgery, the stomach is empty. The old stomach then will continue to secrete its normal hormones & enzymes etc, as stimulated (which basically it never will be) and if it should, it cannot go upwards.
There are no nerves to be injured and any vessels that might bleed, will be caulderized as needed. When they blow the cavity up with gas, it seperates the organs from the muscles, although there is fat all over.
    Hope that made sense.

Try soy or almond milk or lactose free milk. My taste buds have changed drastically. It is all trial and error until you find what works for you. Journal everything you eat..it will make it easier to track intolerance.
