John..... I am not well versed on the sleeve.... But I have heard the same thing about it as well. Before I decided on laparoscopic RNY I made sure I researched all options.
I think every option has its ups and downs.... It is always best to make your decision through plenty of research that you do on your own and with our doctor....and always take plenty of time that way when you are being wheeled into surgery you suffer no doubt.
John..... You seem to know a lot..... Have you heard of revisions? I am actually 4 years out with about 30lbs of bounce back weight that I am struggling to lose. I unfortunately cannot exercise. I am limited to 5 minutes of walking a couple times a day. In 2010 I was diagnosed with a debilitating chronic pain condition called RSD. I do make sure I eat well. Even though I am very sedentary I am able to maintain a stable weight at 195lbs......a much healthier me than I was 4 years ago! I used to be 365lbs. I have tried some light movement when I am having better days but my arms are very weak due to my pain condition. That's where it all started.... I have a constant tremor in my left arm.
I'd like to learn more about a revision option..... But it's hard to find info..... And I don't even know if a doctor would touch me with 30lbs to go.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the stomach contents (food or liquid) leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach).

Hi Got2Bethin - you are welcome to chat directly with some of our patients who have traveled to Mexico to have surgery with our Board Certified Plastic Surgeons via our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CosMedClinic or via our blog http://plasticsurgerymexicoinfo.com/category/success-stories/ Dr. Quiroz, in particular is licensed to practice in the US as well as Mexico, but you can save $$ by going to his new center in Mexico (CosMedClinic.com). Feel free to do research on cosmed Clinic or Dr. Quiroz to find real patient reviews.

You'll regret the sleeve because you'll automatically get heartburn and Gerd forever

Hi! I'd like to hell clear up some misconceptions of the surgery:). I am 4 years out now. I did lose 200lbs, but had 30lbs bounce back weight. No matter who you are.... About 3 years out you will have bounce back weight. But you can keep it minimal with a healthy diet of lean Protein, low carbs. Drink your Protein shakes and take your multi Vitamins religiously. The surgery is only a tool. Your stomach will never stretch back to full capacity but will eventually stretch to hold one full cup of food. Pre surgery your stomach can hold 32oz which is quite a bit.
This is a scary and life changing surgery. But it is worth it. I'm an avid label reader. I also get severe dumping syndrome if I have just a little too much sugar or go over my carb limit for the day. Most stop getting dumping syndrome by two years out and wish it would come back because it is a reminder. I feel blessed that my body will do this to me......it puts me right back on track.
But your own success is in the palm of your hands and no one else's. You can keep the weight off forever with hard work and determination.

I just saw my doc this past Wednesday for my preop and asked the same question. He told me that though he is comfortable performing either procedure, he likes scientific data. The rny has been performed for 30 or 40 years with very high success rate and the sleeve has only been performed for the past 10 years so it doesn't have the longterm data to back it as rny. So I chose rny because I feel the same way. Something interesting though while at my appt...all of us in the group that day were asked if we wanted to participate in a blind random clinical research study for a single incision gastic bypass. Being random you wouldn't know which surgery you were getting until you woke up but my doc did the first single incision rny back in 2004 and is coming to the end of his clinical trial...thought that was interesting though I opted for the normal 5 incision...he said the single is a bit more difficult and a little more post op pain involved. Good luck with your decision! I wish you the best!

Hi. I am about 5 weeks out. From talking with my surgeon and research I did, people have issues at 2-3 years due to old habits. They learn how to stretch the pouch and eat poorly again. Like my surgeon and nutritionist say, this is a tool not a magic pill.
    I wish you luck

Hello... I know foreign countries will always be cheaper then the USA. Do you really wanna risk your life? You can't sue for malpractice. Here you can. You might be lucky, but what are the chances in something going wrong? I here a lot of stories people going to foreign countries, and coming out with a ball in there boobs, being disfigure, and they end up getting plastic surgery all over again but with a USA surgeon.

Welcome to the group .... as far as ur question i am only 18 days out. At first i was thinking about the band .... but my doctor said with my previous health issues and where i need to be rny was better. Talk to ur doctor. Every surgery has the ones it doesn't work for or ones that don't use the tool the way they were sopose to.

Sorry I don't have a simple answer for you. There are so many variables. I can tell you you have a couple of things in your favor: (1) You are young. (2) Your highest weight was never really super high at 278. A lot of it depends on how you carry your weight. I, for instance, have a very, very large pannus (the hanging party of your tummy) Mine comes down quite low. I came into this whole thing knowing I will need plastic surgery.
So..... the long and short of it is that (in my opinion) pretty much everyone who qualifies for RNY will have some extra skin. Will it be so much that you need surgery? Sadly you probably won't know until you have lost the weight.
Have you asked your surgeons opinion on wether you will need plastics or not? My band surgeon told me flat out "Some people I am not sure of wether they will need surgery. YOU will." So, most have some sort of an idea just by looking at your body type.
