Feeling emotional. How will this be different? More pre-opper musings
My surgery date is 11/14/13 and I start my two-week liquid diet on 10/31/13. I’m feeling particularly emotional lately and more so today. I don’t know why and I guess it doesn’t matter why I’m more emotional today than I was yesterday or 20 minutes ago. I’m having difficulty sleeping; I’ve been having weird dreams the past few nights. In my dreams, I look really different than what I assume I’ll look a year down the road (funny, in my dreams, my breasts get bigger and perkier, my hair changes color and it’s think and long – the hubby likes that). I’ve been moody; some things my husband says just set me off (more than usual – the hubby doesn’t like that). I think about food more than I did a couple of weeks ago. And I’m worried about the two-week liquid diet I will start in ten days. I’m cutting back on caffeine and refined sugars and trying to watch my portion sizes (it’s great, I haven’t lost a pound – note sarcasm). I have thoughts like: “Can I really do this?” “What if I fail at this like every other attempt to lose weight?” “What if I’m not strong enough to do this?” I’m not having second thoughts on the surgery, I am committed to this and my rational brain tells me that everything will be OK. But that little voice in the back of my head that has berated me for so long, that bully that laughs at me every time I get on the scale and it doesn’t move continues to mock me and calls me disgusting. There’s that lingering self-doubt. I lack confidence that I will be successful at losing weight when I’ve been such a failure before. Will I ever get rid of that little b***h in the back of my head? How do I snuff her out? How do I take away her power over me? Why am I giving that abusive voice so much power? I assume at least some of you post-oppers felt like this before your surgery. I know I need to buck up and think of this as a new beginning. I am blessed to have this opportunity to turn things around. I just don’t know how to get over this funk I am in. Any suggestions?

How do I tell him I am not interested?
Text him back and say, "I suggest you look for your spark somewhere else, that's what I'm doing."

Down 50 Pounds...Halfway to Goal!
Amazing! Congrats on your success.

Who did you tell?
I discussed it with my husband first - he's very supportive. Called my best friend and got her input, again, very supportive. Next was my parents - they were the hardest, they both cried, but are totally on board (after I explained the surgery to them). Then came my son - he was actually the easiest, which surprised me. Not planning on telling anyone else right now. I'm glad your family was supportive - it's important to have positive people around you during this process. Best of luck.

Has it really come to this?
I'm right there with you...I'm a pre-opper that has those thoughts as well. I think it's completely normal to have doubts and concerns. Since I've made the decision to do this, almost 2 months ago, I've been trying to "clean up my act." I have been eating better, walking some and trying to not be so hard on myself. In the past week, I've worked really hard on paying attention to my portions and went back to the gym a couple of times. I would have thought that I would have lost some weight this week. My scale this morning said I have gained 1/2 a pound. So those ugly, self destructive thoughts started to come into my head. That little demon that tells you "I told you you couldn't do it", "you're failing again", etc. THAT is why I'm doing this. I can't live like that any more. I can't work as hard as I work and not get results, any results. I'm exhausted living like that. I want to love myself and care for myself, not have this destructive BS in my head. That isn't to say this is going to be easy - but, I need to see my hard work pays off, that is my motivation. I wish you luck in your journey - deep down, you know what is best for you and you'll know when you're ready.

Is it legal to strangle someone while on the liquid diet?
Along the same lines...Last night as I was telling my parents about my surgery and liquid diet to be started in two weeks, and concerns/stresses, my dad (who is not overweight and is in great shape) said, "Did I show you these new cookies I found?" Then proceeded to bring me one (yes, I ate it). The look on my mom's face was priceless! She was fasting because she was scheduled for a colonoscopy the following day. I shrugged.

Is it legal to strangle someone while on the liquid diet?
I think there are laws in most municipalities that would allow you to choke her out, but not strangle.

Preopper question about Metformin - did you keep taking it?
Thanks guys. Appreciate the quick responses. I've got the trifecta...PCOS, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. I'm hoping I caught this in time. I'm on a very low dose of levothyroxine - doc and I wanted to try it out to see if it helped w/ my fatigue and maybe help me lose some weight. It didn't work. My TSH levels were below 5 off the med and less than 1 when on. I think I'll be able to quit that. Gamergirl - my doc said the same thing about VSG for my particular issues. I was happy to hear that.

Preopper question about Metformin - did you keep taking it?
Hi. I am on Metformin for my PCOS and metabolic syndrome. I'd really like to get off that and my very low dose of Levothyroxine after surgery. Was wondering if anyone out there was on either of these meds prior to surgery, then went off. I'd like to get down to zero prescriptions if possible. Thanks!

I reintroduced myself to the gym today
My surgery is 4 weeks from tomorrow. **GASP** I know that being in better physical shape (not the round shape I am today), will help with the recovery from VSG. With that said, I turned on my GPS and drove the 2 miles to my gym (note sarcasm). I haven't been to the gym in months because I've been on 6 month pity party and I haven't wanted to go. I've been doing some walking, but not enough. Again, that pity party thing getting in the way. I have been having this internal dialogue with myself the past few weeks about going to the gym. I tell myself I'm going to wake up early and go, but that hasn't happened. I'll go on my lunch hour, but something always comes up, so I don't go. Forget about after work, there's entirely too much going on, I'm far too busy. (This hasn't stopped me from reading a book or watching my favorite TV shows or cooking a kick-a$$ meal for the fam.) So, today I did it - I went to the gym and did 20 minutes on the elliptical and 25 on the treadmill. It wasn't a lot, but I worked up a sweat and my heart was beating. It felt really good, especially after a really bad morning at work. I feel more mentally alert and feel like I can better tolerate the stupidity going on at work. I hope this is the beginning a beautiful relationship between the gym and me.

I KNEW IT! :p
As someone who had Oreos in their house last week for the first time in many months, I can personally attest to this study. It's like they were at my house watching my son and me!
