OBXgirl got a reaction from silverwhitemoon in Pain in uppper left side of body after eating-12 months post op
Yes, mine started around 18 months post-op. A lot of discomfort on left side under breast bone / rib area. Hurt after eating as well as when taking deep breaths. Had CT and EGD and surgeon found my stomach had dilated at the top, grew sort of another little pouch which was pushing up under my diaphragm. This was causing food to become trapped in the pouch & also producing more acid...thus acid reflux. Surgeon also found another hiatal hernia. I just had surgery 2 weeks ago, he removed the growth/pouch (neo-fundus) and fixed the hernia.

I've had this same pain for some time, and two separate EGDs about a year apart showed the same kind of pouching from retained fundus at the very top of my sleeve (upper GI didn't show anything). Being resleeved on Wednesday.

OBXgirl got a reaction from VSGAnn2014 in 3+ years post op having lots of issues need feedback
I am sorry you aren't feeling well, but I recommend contacting your dr. I am 2 1/2 years post op and just had surgery last week to repair hiatal hernia (again) and fix my sleeve. It had grown/stretched at the top (neofundus) and was pushing up on my diaphragm, causing a lot of discomfort. It was allowing food to stay in this pouch and causing acid reflux. Dr said this is a risk w the sleeve surgery...under 5% chance...of course it would happen to me. I hope u find relief soon.

Not much on the pain relief, I'm sorry.
This was my third repair in the same area.
I wish I had some great advice for you but clearly I'm challenged with this stuff as I keep getting them.

@@Dub can you tell me a little more about the abdominal hernia? I just had a Resleeve Monday (3 1/2 yrs post op, neofundus grew at top of sleeve), and I've had excruciating pain very low right side. Saw surgeon today and he said it's a hernia. It's been hurting a lot to get up and down, even to take a deep breath sometimes. He doesn't want to go right back into surgery to repair it. He would rather allow my body to heal for 2 months. He said the pain can come and go with abdominal hernias. What has been your experience and have u found anything that helps w the pain, other than surgery??

I had less than stellar backing from my insurance company and was in a rush to lose a pile of weight due to a back injury that had me shut down.
I wound up self funding the sleeve surgery and was able to really speed up the process leading up to surgery.
The surgery was a breeze and I have zero complaints. I also had an abdominal hernia repaired during the sleeve operation. The hernia took a few weeks to heal enough for me to return to work and even longer to return to the gym. Had I simply had the sleeve surgery only......I would have been back walking a couple miles of day by the end of the first week.
Exercise gets my metabolism elevated and helps in every way.
Close to 4 months post op and the weight loss has been steady 85 lbs since surgery on top of 55 lost prior to surgery. Feeling much better and have a high level of confidence that I'll reach my goals and live there.
My only regret was not doing this much sooner.

I believe I understand your intention with this remark, but I can't help but mention that those in the first 2 years post op have very little understanding of the experience at the longer term mark. I will be 4 years post op in December and this year has been much tougher maintaining then the first 2-3 years were. I keep asking myself, have I slipped back to old bad habits? Maybe a little, but i think it is more that I am living like a "normal" middle aged American woman and look around, alot of them could stand to lose 20 or 50.
I am bouncing around 5-10 over goal and not happy about it, but my efforts to knock them back off haven't been very successful...
I am very very happy that I still wear single digit clothing and look like a normal, not obese person though... and I am continuing to work it - with the first goal being to NOT regain any more...

I am genuinely sorry you haven't experienced lasting success post WLS. I went through that - I lost about 70 pounds with the band, regained it all plus a whole crap load more. Most on this forum know the emotional pain of losing and regaining huge amounts of weight (I had ton it before too) but somehow having it post WLS is even more... devastating. I was in my 30s when I had the lapband, I made a genuine effort to educate myself pre surgery, I tried very hard post surgery and yet I failed. In hindsight, a big part of the problem is that tool never worked well for me and the side effects made my life hell (talk about reflux - I had to sleep upright if I had ANY fill!) but also that I just didn't have all the pieces together myself either.
While i am in the minority, I actually agree with much of your sentiment. WLS is not a miracle cure and even though we all say we know it's "just a tool" in reality many don't understand that the tool doesn't work very well over time. It works great at first, and then one day you realize... holy crap... this REALLY IS just a tool and I can regain weight even with my tiny tummy.
I am always in the minority opinion on this one - but I also am "uncomfortable" with younger/not as heavy people diving into weight loss surgery. Especially if they really haven't seriously tried lifestyle/behavioral programs. In fact, when I was revised to the sleeve, I was looking for a long term behavior program. I had the good luck to be screened by the director of a 2 year program who told me that my disease of obesity was far too advanced and she felt I would not be successful in her program (I was late 40s and at least 150# overweight and had been obese or overweight many many years).
However, much of your other information shared is not correct and is misleading and while I don't intend this as a criticism, I don't want newbies to read it and not comprehend the misstatements of fact. (Everyone is entitled to their opnions - but not their own version of the facts!!!)
Muscle loss is an important topic no matter HOW you lose weight. strength and muscle building (and aerobic) exercise is more about MAINTENANCE than it is about weight loss. why is that? If you don't maintain (or regain after losing) muscle mass your metabolism drops and it is really much harder to maintain.
I lost a crudload of weight post sleeve and I think I look GREAT. People who didn't know me before are always shocked that I lost so much because I look healthy and athletic (thats a joke!) like I have been trim and active my whole life. That "looking old and unhealthy" is a complete myth. I have had people look at my before (age 48) and after (50) photos tell me that I now look like my "before" pictures daughter. That is how much younger I look post weight loss.
I think many people who are dissatisfied with their looks, dissatisfied with having a smaller tummy (for me a blessing!) are in truth struggling with other, underlying issues such as dismorphia etc. Don't get me wrong, I have "issues" - ha! As a wise woman once said on these forums "you don't get to 300# and not have SOMETHING going on contributing to this". The physical disease process of obesity is the rollercoaster i couldn't get off without surgery, but the "issues" contributed to me getting there in the first place. The difference is i am now mature enough to seriously face that emotional stuff. Not perfect, but getting better and better.
Good luck in your future and know that you can regain good health quite readily by going back to basics as far as eating (sleever rules!) AND by exercising and becoming active. Perhaps focus less on the scale and focus more on good health.

All I can say is, if and I mean a big IF it was that easy to lose weight people would. I am sure a lot of forum members gave good efforts in losing weigh, I know I did. I have work with nutritionists and personal trainers. I have been obese since the age of 6. Back then we were not eating the way our society eats today. My brother is not obese and we grew up in the same house. Not all obese people are binge eaters. I don't think it is as simple as cutting back and exercising . If it was, I'd be skinny.
Anyways, I have had issues with my sleeve. I have regained and am currently experiencing complications that require me to have revision surgery. I do not regret taking a chance on me! I have been FAT my entire life. I am not convinced that surgery is a mistake. I am sorry you have had a difficult time. I do believe you need to go into surgery having done your research. Asking questions and building a support system.
If anyone new reads your post, I hope the take away is the importance of not making a rash decision.

It's pretty darn near impossible to stretch your stomach out. Unless you are self abusing and even that is super painful I am sure you will not stretch it out,
A Stall is no inches or weight loss in over 30 days. Are you measuring and taking photos weekly? Not everything is scale oriented.
You should be able to eat more now. Your stomach is done healing, you should be getting all your Protein organically rather than chemically by shakes. You should be eating every 3-4 hours.
Keep tracking and measure all your losses not just the scale.< /p>
I dropped 2 full pant sizes from a 10 to a 6 with out losing a single pound.

Guys, I am in EXACTLY the same boat. I am approaching 6 months out and the EXACT same thing happened to me.
IndiAllie/Boogiebabe, it is like you reached into my head and pulled out my very experience.
I have started logging things on MyFitnessPal to improve my accountability.
I don;t think there's much more we can do - other than be mindful that from this point we're going to have to now 'work' at getting our last bits of weight off.
Its all about our accountability. As I have said before - if I cock this up? I absolutely have only myself to blame. So lets agree to not let it happen to us?
    Whaddya say?

I was sleeved on July 11 2013. I am a little over 5 months and I feel great. I thought it was time to post some photos. I know it helped me when I was thinking of getting sleeved. So hope it can help others too. I now have no sleep apnea and my blood pressure is normal. No more aching feet is a plus too.

It's a stupid number as was pointed out to me (thanks m2g) this morning and I'm going to take the victory lap for now and just keep trying to Work on myself.

From my experience reading here, I don't think a single person doesn't go through what you are going through at some point. But, to be honest with you, you are still early in your sleeved life. There will come a time when you are able to eat anything albeit in smaller quantities. I have found that I enjoy the fact that I don't have to eat the large quantities I see other people eat. I smile at the fact that I can feel fully sated with the portion that I do enjoy. It took some time and some personal exploration as to why I mourned the fact I could not abuse food the way I used to, but, for me, I did come to a new relationship with food and value this newfound relationship.
You may actually find you yearn for these days when you didn't enjoy food Now is the time to develop new eating habits as you will learn how to eat around you sleeve and then you truly are on your own.

As of this morning, I am officially OVERWEIGHT!!
I started this journey almost 7 months ago (May 16 '13) at 263.8. I was a tight size 20 bottom, XXL top, 42DDD boobs and a BMI that labeled me morbidly obese. As of today, I am 168.8, only 8.8 pounds away from my original goal (which I've since lowered but...). I am in a loose size 12 but could move into 10s if I liked the pants tight look. I wear a size L top but everyone says a Medium looks better. My boobs are now a 36D and my BMI has finally hit OVERWEIGHT!!!
I am so freaking happy. I haven't been this size since college. I've lost exactly 95 pounds and my new mini goal is 100 pounds by Christmas!!
