I'm 66 and am steadily losing but not setting any weight loss records. 7 months out and down 74 lbs. being older it took a lot of thought before I did this. Some of the younger ones just jump in and expect a miracle to occur without much effort. I'll get to my goal but it may take me awhile.

my experience and perception are the same as gr8kauz's...in my case, I think it's the natural slow-down of metabolism (I am also menopausal although not every woman 50+ is of course) and the fact that I have been a type 2 diabetic for over ten years now...there are plenty of women on this forum who are over 50 who have been quite successful...so the Club Five-Oh members can do it!!

I feel my weight loss is slow. All the years of Yo Yo dieting have taken its toll. Exciting to hear that once I do get all this weight off, it may stay off, one advantage to a little age, lol.
    Good luck on your journey!

PGee reacted to PainInTheGlass in first day on pre op liquid diet and I have a really bad headache
I had a headache the first day on the pre-op diet too. I just figured it was due to no cola's, carbs, caffeine, etc. Funny side note...I got the same headache when I went on the Atkins diet--except it lasted 3 days! Stranger yet--I suffer from chronic Migraines, but I haven't had one since the sleeve surgery. Now I'm wondering if it was something I'd been eating that was causing the headaches.
Anyway, once the headache passes, you'll be well on your way to the new you!

I'm from the Quincy Illinois area and am new to this forum. My doctor is in the process of submitting the insurance information. I should know something by my August appointment about a surgery date.
I was originally going to be getting an RNY, but my doctor ended up suggesting the VSG instead. I'm thankful to find a place like this to learn and hear from others.

Thank you for being candid....it's important for people considering VSG to know that some sleevers have regrets...otherwise we don't get a full spectrum of WLS patient experiences.....best wishes.

I have had some " holy cow what have I done" moments. I am 9 days PO and it does get better. I will say it is not easy, the mental part for me is tough. It will be interesting to see how my attitude changes as time goes on.

Welcome! I think a bunch of us are in the same boat.....took me 7 years to get to this point...and even after I started this journey, I wasn't at peace with it for a few months.....finally got there (still have some concerns that I think are normal), but am waiting for "the call" to tell me if it's approved....again, welcome, we're glad you're here!!!

Just an update for my wife phoenix79, all is well and she had a textbook sleeve operation. The Dr said she had the perfect anatomy for a sleeve surgery which I think translates into a successful post op experience. I think we will get to go home from hospital tomorrow. This is a much better experience then my sleeve, exactly 1 year ago. Two days in ICU and the 2 more days recovery from small complications before allowed to go home. Thanks for wishing my wife well.

PGee reacted to melissa130 in How did recovery compare to previous surgeries?
I felt better 2 days after my sleeve than I did with my 2 c-sections. I felt that the csections were harder for me recover from. I always figured it was because of the extra weight when i had them. The sleeve surgery was not comfortable- but it is manageable with meds and it is worth it. Just like having a c section for a healthy baby- the sleeve surgery is worth it for the future healthy body!

The book is called "The BIG Book on the GASTRIC SLEEVE" by Alex Brecher (there is a link on here....it's available at Amazon in a download or hard copy (I'd recommend the download if you have a reader as the book is huge and a bit conspicuous LOL.....I'm rather private about the sleeve) Good luck to you all and again, welcome!
PS there was also a thread yesterday with a bunch of books people recommended....you may want to look for it.

Phew, finished my last NUT appointment.....and now the waiting begins.....My biggest concern about the approval process is that the ins. co. changed their requirements sometime after I started this journey, but, that's beyond my or my surgeon's control, so I'm ready.........I'm soooooo ready! Keep your fingers crossed. Thank you for putting up with my questions/concerns during the last 2.5 months.....you all have been a godsend, sharing your knowledge and experience.....thank you!

My doctor told me that he had a patient die after the surgery from several complications. He also told me that this person was very heavy, had several illnesses related to their weight(including some kind of blood problem) and was not up and moving when they should have been.
I took my chances. Because honestly, at 376 pounds and 28 years old I was as good as dead anyway.
I will be 3 weeks out tomorrow and at my 2 week appt I was down 30 pounds..... I am living!!!

PGee reacted to SpaceDust in Protein shots
The problem with most of the Protein shots is the primary Protein is collegen, which our bodies do not readily convert for use. Good protein options are whey protein isolate or soy protein isolate for most people. So, while a number of them say they have good Proteins, it's usually a ways down the ingredient list, and the actual usable protein may only be, for example, 11 grams out of the 40-50 grams that they claim to have.
There is one protein shot that appears to be reasonably.high in good protein, and I've been told this one is acceptable - it's called Yes, Whey. There may be others, but this is the only one I'm aware of. This Carnivor shot that is linked to above may also be a good option if you can tolerate them, since they use beef protein isolate, which our bodies should be able to use in theory.
Of course, if your doctor or NUT recommends you use them, follow their directions. I'm neither a NUT nor a doctor, just someone who has done a bunch of research
