CassieWNY reacted to Vegasme in Mindful Body... and other thoughts on mental eating
So I finally got my surgery date... July 22!!! It has been a long 6 months of tests and insurance fights to get to this point and although I feel ready for the surgery, the thought of being mentally prepared still lingers. I do realize, for myself, that I am not overweight because I am just a more hungry person than a thin person... I know I am overweight because I eat when I am not physically hungry at all.. just bored , sad, happy, tired or just to reward myself for a long day at work. I wonder what will happen with those feelings when I physically cannot eat. So much of my family time has been focused around meals , I guess I am just worried that even though I am aware there will be mental challenges I wonder If I will feel sad or frustrated?!! How long will that last ? Any advice or comments or overcoming the mental anguish that is sure to follow the surgery when I can no longer eat?? Thanks everyone

you should be so proud of yourself - this is not a quick fix = people can and do screw this tool up, but I know it will work for you and you will feel so much better about yourself.

Hi I am Cassie. I am a 44 year old senior corporate executive who lives in New York. I am the proud mother of a very delightful, and somewhat petulant, 8 year old girl. I am married to my husband of over 12 years. He has been very supportive as have the close friends that I chose to tell. I also have a fantastic golden retriever who is always concerned about me.
My journey to my sleeve operation last Thursday was a long one. For me - no matter how many degrees one has or how much common sense they have, it can still take time to get your head around the fact that there is something that you can just not conquer - weightloss. Dealing with thoughts of failure, laziness, etc. was at times, overwhelming. It was also embarrassing.
Then comes the process of telling some people. Even telling the man who loves me was an incredibly tough and a somewhat humiliating process. He would tell you it was not an issue at all.
So many of you are positive and able to share your news. I applaud you. In fact, I envy you.
For me, I had to accept my weight before I could get to weightloss. A somewhat isolating process for me but it didn't have to be. I am here now. I have been sleeved and I plan to knock the ball out of the park. I wish you all the best in your journey.

So many of these postings hit home for me. In the end, I am tired of thinking about my weight. I am consumed by it daily - from assessing whether I am the "fattest" person in the room to figuring out if someone is treating me differently because of my weight. Stereotyping of larger people makes it very difficult for me in my job as many assume I am heavy merely because I am not a hard worker, or lazy, or I cannot get away from the fridge. It would sometimes make me sad. Often it would make me angry. I want energy back... I am going to channel myself to accomplish this goal for me. I cannot wait until I am able to shake loose all the negativity from weight gain, all the self-hatred, the denial, and the guilt. Losing the weight will not do that on its own, it will take a complete overhaul of my mindset. I am ready...finally. I do not want to be embarrassed anymore, or angry, or humiliated, or sad... or miss out on anything I want to do because I am heavier. Tired of blurring the edges, hiding from mirrors, hiding from cameras, films, being posted on FB, the waterslide, the planes, that darn waiting room chair made for someone size 8.... I might have reached my lowest point when I asked myself if my friends felt sorry for me because they hung out with me. (Not being worthy on my personality alone). I know I am not alone but I have felt that way for over a decade.

I wanted to say thanks ladies for the replies. I am having my polyp removed tomorrow and I have decided to go with the ablation. I am hoping they can do everything tomorrow because of course it is that time of the month. The doctor said he could still do it provided it wasn't too heavy. I just don't want to have to postpone it since I did just get my surgery date for the sleeve and my husand got his for the bypass. Thanks again!!!

LOVED the ablation! My OB/GYN said she has a 95% patient satisfaction rating with it. It was about as invasive and involved as an endoscopy. I was back to work the next day but would recommend having it on a Thursday and going back to work on Monday. One drawback is that you can no longer sustain a pregnancy. When I researched it previously, the studies stated that women who had the ablation had a significant percentage reduction in having a subsequent hysterectomy. Your health situation is likely different than others here so it is always best to discuss your options with your physician. Feel free to reach out to me. I am happy to go into further detail. Best of luck!

Greetings July Hopefuls. I am also in line for a mid-July surgery date in NY. Have to finish up with the regular visits. With apnea and metabolic syndrome, it is my understanding that approval should not be an issue with my carrier. Saying that, I think my stress level on approval is higher than my stress level on the surgery itself. The old "check is in the mail" piece. I do not have a pre-surgical weight loss program but I do have the liver reduction diet. Frankly, dieting for two weeks isn't hard - I think it may be what got me here. Having done the homework on the surgery and the surgeon, I am now expanding my knowledge so I am ready for post-surgery. I want to be as ready as I can.

I did the same thing- I gained 8 pounds in 3 months before surgery. But take it from me! You will be able to eat your favorite foods again in time. I am 20 months post op. I eat what I want in moderation. there is nothing I can't eat, or drink now. I would love to go back and not gain those 8 pounds, I would probably 8 pounds less now!!

    Hello everyone!
I'm Shari and I have my surgery scheduled for July 26th. I was suprised to read about the six month diet requirement for some insurances. My surgeon is the one requiring that I lose 10 pounds prior to surgery, which I am currently working on. My insurance does require that I have three visits with the NUT. I've completed one visit with the NUT and two more to go. I've also met with the psychologist for an initial one-on-one. My second appointment is next week and apparently I have to take some testing. One of which is 500 plus questions! Yikes! All worth it though. I'm currently 5'5' and 248lbs. I, too, have to do the endoscopy, which I'll have done next month. Sounds like insurance appooval won't be as of yet, The facility performing the surgery will wait until I finish up with my NUT and the psychological assessment to send out for an approval. I look forward to going on this journey with all of you.

Hi! I am anticipating a July surgery as well. I am currently doing the 6 month pre op diet required by my insurance. I have completed most of my testing. Had sleep study on the 29th but haven't heard anything from the dr yet. During the study, the tech woke me up and hooked me up to the cpap because I had stopped breathing several times, so that doesn't bode well. I'll be meeting with the surgeon this week. I think the only other thing I have to do is the endoscopy. Then it's just waiting to finish my 6 months and get insurance approval.
