    I need Advice!

Everyone that is suggesting the daughter follow the diet along with the mother after her surgery........really???????? Does anyone actually think that an overweight person can just stop eating all together? Hey what a novel idea. Then there would be no need for WLS because nobody would be overweight. Let's just get everybody to stop eating regular meals and eat 3-4 ounces at meal times and no snacking! Not to be sarcastic here but what is that idea but just another diet? As for school lunches, pack her a lunch! No big deal. Okay, sorry, got that out of my system.

    Acid and vomiting

I had a somewhat similar problem. My dr put me on Prilosec. Works great. Might ask your dr. about it. I was told the stomach produces the same amount of acid no matter the size. With a small stomach full of acid, there is no where for the food to go. Prilosec is supposed to turn off the acid production. Good Luck!

    I need Advice!

Lots of good advice before me. I am wondering one thing though? Why Mexico? I am not against going to Mexico for WLS but I don't understand why leave the country when it is so readily available closer to us? That said, I feel for you and your daughter. I understand how obesity is inherited. Yes you daughter can commit to an exercise and diet regimen and at her young age, lose a lot of baby fat. But she will struggle for the rest of her life. I personally do not see how age has anything to do with the decision to have WLS or not. I have twins who are 13 1/2 years old. Thankfully, they both have great metabolisms and are very active, but I think if I were in your shoes, I would definitely be thinking surgery. Especially if she is willing and understands what she will be changing in her life. for some reason your post really touched my heart, I guess because I was overweight when I was 12 (not as big as your daughter but enough to be miserable.) I lost the weight until I hit my late 20's then guess what? 20 years later, I had the sleeve and am losing and happy! Please be sure you daughter understands that things like Ice cream and soda will not be as restrictive on the sleeve because they don't fill you up like solids do. That is an easy way to sabotage weight loss. (had a friend with lab band who ate ice cream all the time and couldn't understand why the stall????) Anyway, God bless you and your daughter. I will pray for the right decision for both of you to come to you. Good Luck to you on your surgery also!

    Calcium citrate

I agree on the bariatric advantage. In addition to lemon, they have raspberry that's pretty good. I take 4 a day. It really helps me with my snacking, because I take 2 about mid morning and 2 mid afternoon, when the munchies hit! They usually fill me up so I don't have room for snack food.

    HELP!

I dry heaved for 14 hours straight after my sleeve! The nurses had their hands full with me! LOL! I was worried I would rip my staples right out, but the nurses weren't concerned. After three days, I had my x-ray and everything was just fine. No leaks. Good luck to you.

    Bypass vs Sleeve?

I had the sleeve because it was a less invasive surgery. My boss had the bypass 6 years ago and she suffers from malabsorption. Plus she still has a lot of weight to loss and her eating doesn't seem to be as restrictive as those with with sleeve.
  8. I did not have the pre-op education class (mine was post op) and I did not have the pre-admitting visit at hospital. But the rest, yes, I had to go through them also. I had to travel about 3 hours to my surgeon, so most of my stuff was scheduled on the same day.
  9. I had the sleeve surgery with no hernias, no problems. But I too had problems swallowing. I told my nurse, that I could feel the sip of water going all the way down and when it hit my stomach, it felt like a bomb going off! She told me to drink warm drinks until it felt better. I don't really like warm drinks, so I went with sugar free popsicles. They did not bother me. So that is where most of my fluid came from for the first week or so. I still have a little trouble swallowing, but I guess I am getting used to it, because it just seems normal now. Good luck to you!

    hungry. ..

I was told the same thing that most people are replying here, from my doctor. The amount of time on a liquid diet is determined by your BMI. Just follow doctors orders and you will do fine.

    What's the pain like?

I had no problem with the pain. I am very sensitive to anesthesia so I had some trouble with dry heaves. I also had the gas pains, but overall, no big deal!

    How many calories?

I am allowed 800 but I rarely get over 500 to 600 calories per day. I am 3 months post op.

    Hair loss?

I JUST got through reading an article about this! I am losing hair by the handfuls! I am 3 months post op. You can read the article here. It explains how hair loss is natural, what to expect and why it happens after WLS. www.slhn.org/docs/pdf/bariatric_surgery_and_hair_loss.designed.pdf

    Burping much?

My dr told me it was acid in the stomach. He said the stomach will produce the same amount after the sleeve as before even though the stomach Is smaller. He put me on Prilosec. I didn't think it was doing any good until I ran out! I have been burping ever since. Got to get my refill! Good luck

    I wish I hadn't seen this forum....

I know exactly how you feel. If I had joined this forum before my sleeve, I doubt I would have done it. However, I didn't join this forum until 2 days after my surgery. It was a big help to me then. It helped me to realize that what I thought was a complication was really just very normal and the advice I got from fellow sleevers helped me more than my nutritionist did! It is scary, but hang in there. It will be okay! I pray for all future and fellow sleevers to be able to live a healthy and happy life with no major complications. And I pray for those who are suffering from complications that time will heal their issues and they can move forward to that dream life we all want! Good luck to you and God Bless!!
  16. When I had my sleeve, my doctor told me that my stomach would hold about 1 ounce of food. He said that later it would hold up to 4 ounces but he did not specify when later was! I was sleeved on March 27. When did everyone (or has anyone) noticed that they are able to eat just a little bit more? Thanks for the replies!

    post op soda

I was sleeved on March 27. I tried a sip of diet soda after a couple of weeks, then at one month. I threw up both times. Now, I can now drink Coke zero without any problems.
  18. My highest weight was 232. I had been wanting to have WLS for years but didn't have insurance. My husband recently changed jobs and the family insurance is very affordable. I told him the first thing I am going to do is get WLS! So glad I did!

    My goodbye to diet coke

I don't see how drinking a diet soda can hurt weight loss attempts. They have zero calories, zero fat, zero carbs. I asked my NUT if the fizz could stretch the sleeve and she said no. The only reason she said to avoid caffeine was because of stomach irritation and the fizz could cause a bloated feeling. I have neither of these problems.

    Bread substitute

I found this recipe on facebook. I tried it today and even though I messed it up, I think it's a good one. I didn't whip my egg whites long enough so the batter flowed into one big shape. But I was still able to cut it into bread size, they were just very thin. I am not a good cook, so this is a normal experience from me! I'm sure the better cooks will have better luck with the recipe. Here it is: Will you have a hard time living without bread? Ooopsies are a good option. It’s a “bread” without carbs and can be eaten in a variety of ways. Oopsies 6–8 depending on size. 3 eggs 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of cream cheese a pinch of salt ½ teaspoon baking powder (can be excluded) Separate the eggs, with the egg whites in one bowl and the egg yolks in another. Whip the egg whites together with the salt until very stiff. You should be able to turn the bowl over without the egg whites moving. Mix the egg yolks and the cream cheese well. If you choose, add the psyllium seed husk and baking powder (this makes the Oopsie more bread-like). Gently fold the egg whites into the egg yolk mix – try to keep the air in the egg whites. Put 6 large or 8 smaller oopsies on a baking tray. Bake in the middle of the oven at 150° C (300° F) for about 25 minutes – until they turn golden. You can eat Oopsies as bread or use them as a bun for a hotdog or hamburger. You can also put different kinds of seeds on them before baking them, for instance poppy, sesame or sunflower seeds.
  21. I was sleeved on March 27. At my last doctor's visit, this week, I was down 43 pounds. I now I am not getting enough water, but overall I am very happy with my sleeve.

    Bariatric advantage multivitamins

I take one in the morning and one at bedtime. I can't handle two at a time.
  23. I felt the exact same you did! It was really uncomfortable. Every time I took a sip of water or broth it felt like a little bomb went off in my stomach! LOL! I went back to work after 1 week but I was very puny for about another week. Don't rush it. You will get there. I am about 2 1/2 months out and I can eat anything, just not very much. I had 1/2 a tuna sandwich for lunch! Your taste may change, mine did. Food doesn't taste the same for me anymore. It's more about the texture that I crave, so that didn't help me. Good luck!

    Questions! PLEASE RESPOND!

I would say you are doing pretty good. I had my surgery March 27 and I have lost 42 pounds. I don't get the full 64 ounces of water a day, but I try to sip on something all day long. During the hot days of summer, sugar free popsicles are great! Get your protein from meat, beans, cheese, milk, peanut butter. I eat a lot of meat. If I want a snack (I know we are not supposed to, but occasionally it's okay) I will get a slice of cheese and wrap it around a piece of lunchmeat or I will get a spoon full of peanut butter. So basically, my snacks are full of protein also. good luck!
