mysleevemylife reacted to newat52 in HERE IT GOES...
I would guarantee that using a straw will not stretch your stomach. I would also guarantee that the girl who put on 50 pounds is six months was putting something a lot more that a straw in her mouth.
Anyhow....Back to the original question,
@mysleevemylife, we were sleeved on the same day! My surgeon does fall toward the conservative side so I feel safe in using a straw. His orders were no straws or gum for 4 weeks. I have been using a straw since then and no issues.
Hope all is going well and you are getting back to normal. I feel like life is getting back there and I am loving it!

The idea is that if you gulp with a straw
a. you may take in too much and
b. you will take in a significant amount of extra air, causing bloat which expands your stomach.
The idea is that if you do this regularly your stomach will stretch to accommodate.
There is a certain element of truth to this if you still have the fundus, much as a normal stomach will stretch over time if you habitually fill it with too much. Think about a balloon after it's been blown up for awhile. Let the air out and it does not return to its original size; it is stretched out.
It has minimal application to most sleevers, as in most cases they have little or no fundus remaining after surgery, and the remaining stomach is not stretchy to anywhere near the same degree. It would be wise to be very careful while you're still healing, though, because you don't want to put a lot of pressure on the staple line.

mysleevemylife reacted to BiggieDukes27 in Surgery was 4/8 and today i am down....
63 LBS!!! I am so excited that I almost passed out at my Dr's today. I weighed 552 on the day of my surgery and today I weighed at 489LBS. My Dr was very happy and cleared me for stage 4. I asked if this was normal and he said someone my size would lose quicker, but I'm definitely ahead of schedule. I'll be honest, I had some thoughts of regret right after the surgery, but then I really focused and it is paying off. I still hate Protein Drinks, but I've found other ways o get my Protein like eggs or Peanut Butter on a spoon have really helped.

mysleevemylife reacted to libaba in Do you still enjoy wine (or alchohol in general) after sleeve?
I have been really worried about the non-drinking aspects of this - particularly when combined with the fact that I just quit smoking too. I was sleeved on 1/26 and I asked the nurse at my Dr office about it last week. She told me that they generally recommend no alcohol. I'm convinced that this is because it contains sugar and is considered empty calories. However, she said if I wanted to try 1/2 glass to go ahead. I did indeed with no problems. A few days after that I had a business cocktail party to attend and drank 2 cranberry/vodka small drinks. No problems there either. I'm just glad to know that I can enjoy it in moderation if need be. I'm still losing, and have not hit a stall yet either.

mysleevemylife reacted to onedivanms in Do you still enjoy wine (or alchohol in general) after sleeve?
I was sleeved on December 30, 2010. I had my first drink on Jan. 30, 2011. I have on had white wine and I was fine. I have discovered that my tolerence is a lot lower than it used to be. It doesn't take but about 4-6 oz of wine and I am tipsy. I used to be a really big drinker. I was scared to death that I was going to gain some weight when I drank that glass of wine. I actually lost 2 pounds that weekend.
Hope it helps

Sadly so, you may hear the whole "easy way out" often. You will get to the point where you may just shrug it off. Yes, it is frustrating. I don't blame you for venting at all. It's so hard for so many to understand unless they have walked in our shoes. Congrats on making a decision to better your health. It's one of the best decisions I've made for myself. I wish you the best with your journey. :-)

Well, now is the time for everyone to know a little more about me. I'm NOT into drama. I ignore any negative comments & keep it moving. Thanks for all of the input. Have a great day! (Takes a drink from my straw & smiles) On the next visit with my surgeon, we'll see what he says about it.

mysleevemylife reacted to Andi in Disgusting Protein Shots Beware.
In our post op care book under the Protein section our NUTs state: It is not recommended to use the Protein "shots", "shooters" or "bullets" as they do not contain the appropriate protein source.
When it comes to picking an appropriate Protein shake they said to go with something that has "Whey Protein Isolate" or "Soy Protein Isolate" as the first ingredient. This should provide you with the amino acids that your body is going to need to build Proteins.

After being banded, I thought after I'd lost the over 100 lbs I needed to lose then I'd unfill all my Fluid and maintain. Now I'm unfilled (not because I made it to goal but becuz it slipped) and I'm slowly GAINING. I NEED a tool to help me. I'm defeated....
My whole family is encouraging me to just take out the band and leave it alone and do the last 30 lbs by myself. I know myself too well to ever let that happen! At least my hubbys in my corner...

mysleevemylife reacted to Ms.AntiBand in IMAGINE IF...WOULD YOU?
Yep... HELL NO! I know me very well. I've been at goal a million times and guess what? The sleeve is going to work permanently for many reasons. A few are, I want to be healthy, I want to eat right, I hate being fat and it's cost me 100 grand just getting to the VSG , so by God.. It's going to work! I hope my wicked stomach rots a slow ugly death.. Good riddance!

Maybe they could give you a stomach transplant? Then you would find out too late that you had the stomach from a serial killer that died in the electric chair, vowing vengence on the world. And late at night your stomach would make you sleep walk to Taco Bell where you'd have 4th meal and kill all the workers and put their remains in the taco meat!!!!!!!!!!!!! See the movie - Taca Taca Taca Taco bHell - MUAHAHAHAHAHA

You're probably too young to remember the movie, The Blob.. When you said what you did the scene in the car when the blob tries snicking over the back of the seat.. Ok, no doubt, I'm the only one old enough lol
Carry on
