Good day.. I will be 56 next month. I had my surgery on 12/28/11. I reached my goal exactly at my 1 year anniversary. Although I had a lot less weight to lose than others, my BMI was still 41. I would say my biggest flaw area is my abdomen. I absolutely hate the "sway" belly, but just over the last 3 months, I've noticed a big change in my skin. I have not lost any weight in nearly 4 months. I do work out 5 days a week, but it seemed like it helped very little with both the sway chin and tummy until I stopped losing weight. I think the skin is starting to catch up to my inner skeleton or I'm getting used to it. I actually saw a photo of myself that a friend snapped over the weekend and didn't mind my chin anymore. I will spend the summer doing more crunches and see where this abdominal skin settles, if it doesn't get better, it's a panniculectomy for me! Overall I will take the lose skin over the all the medications I no longer take.

Congratulations on being a grandma! I haven't been blessed with grandchildren yet but I'll be ready for them with better health.
I have read the book by Dr Alvarez, it's full of good information. Yes, I would like the names of the cookbooks. I've got a lot to learn about a new way of cooking and eating.
Best of luck to you also!

Finally a place to learn about weight loss surgery after 50. I wish I had found this forum months ago. My surgery is scheduled for Jan. 29th, 2013. Just 6 days, I'm so excited!
The thing is, the closer I get to the date, the more I feel like there is so much that I don't know. My surgeon is very experienced and I have confidence in his ability but I just don't feel well informed so I will be having lots of questions for you.
I'm having the surgery for health reasons (diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea). Looking better will be an awesome bonus. I'm 5'1" have 100 pounds to lose.
Here is my first question. I'm afraid of how I will look afterwards. I'm 52,how much loose, saggy skin can I expect? I think I'll be just as unattractive but in a different way. I'm really not vain but I thought I could ask this question here and get some honest feedback.

3 weeks and 21 pounds later, I almost feel normal again.
This morning when I woke up, without thinking about it, put my hands to my face and realized my face felt different! I could feel my face instead of so much soft fat. I can't wait for all the changes (good & bad)!

Ok, I've enjoyed all of your posts. And at 57, I have lost 102# since 5/12. I still have 25 more to go. The skin is getting more and more wrinkly everyday. I weight lift, do crunches, pushups, balance ball, swim, bike, hike, Water aerobics...always on the go and loving every minute of it. I now wear a lot of compression workout wear, so the loose skin doesn't show that much in public...my dilemma is I have been single for 13 years and am really getting interested in dating again...I am terrified of takingy clothes off in front of a new man!! I know if they really love me, it won't matter...and yes, Breast implants are in my future since I went from 44dd to 38c..my boobs are like pancakes without a good bra on....when I was fat I could just date a man who loved big women and not be self conscious about my body...but I wasn't ever happy that way and I could never love anyone who loved me fat because I didn't love myself like that.... So, I guess I've vented enough....at 57 I feel like I have about 20-30 years left, I want them to be the best. Hopefully I'll be chasing my little granddaughters around with their new Grandpa who accepts all of just as we are.

Hi there! I'm a young 53, sleeved Oct 11, 2012, and have gone from size 24 (278 lbs. Last August) and I am now 200 lbs, size 16. People say I look 20 years younger! Mind you they can't see under my clothes, the flabbedity, sagetty skin, but with my Spanx on and a good bra, the image looks pretty good. Naked is a whole different thing-but my husband's not complaining, believe me! I've hit my first stall, other than that and a little Constipation early on, it's been great! Looking forward to life instead of just looking forward to food! Good luck!

Ok, hope I'm not stepping on any toes...like I said this is NOT my recipe....someone else posted it here...I just can't find it here now...here goes:
    Protein balls
    1 cup old fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups Protein Powder (I used chocolate)
1 cup Peanut Butter (I used crunchy Skippy)
Handful of dried fruit (I used cranberries)
Dash of SF Torani Syrup (to taste)
    Splenda (I used 3 packets)
Mix the glob together with a little Water until you get a consistency to roll into balls. Roll into balls a little smaller than golf balls and freeze. Take them out and defrost when you plan to eat. They're good frozen and defrosted.
    Yum!

New to the post, I'm having my surgery tomorrow at 9:45! I'm a self pay with Dr Thomas Borland in New Iberia Louisiana (about two hours from my home). $9800 - I went in for a consult Jan 8, and got my surgery date. No pre-op diet, just Clear Liquids today and some gross liquid to drink tonight. I have a friend who had hers with Dr Borland and she's 67 lbs down in 4 1/2 months! I am so excited! I can't wait for results like that!

I'm 56 and had my surgery 12/27/12. Like you, my main reason for the surgery was (hopefully) getting rid of diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure. My diabetes has been bad enough that I've worn an insulin pump for the last 4 years (taking close to 150 units of insulin a day). Since my surgery, I have not had to wear my insulin pump (I occasionally have to inject 1-2 units of insulin, but not everyday) and I'm taking half the amount of pills for HBP. Don't lose sight of the prize - good health. Any loose skin will be well worth it!!

Everyone's skin is different, so you will just have to loose & see what happens! But I agree with everyone else...a little saggy skin is nothing compared to good health! & you can always have it removed if it bothers you that much! I'm 52 also & am looking forward to my new body...saggy & all! Lol....good luck on your journey!

I just turned 52. Down 70lbs so far. A little sagging in the inner thigh and belly area, but not too bad. Working out has helped. I understand that it could take up to 2 years for your skin to adjust so, I;m not worried about it. Clothes will cover my problem areas. We love to camp at lakes, so not sure how to hide the saggy thighs though.

Hi,the skin is an issue vut you are going to enjoy so many other things that even though I think it bugs all of us,it is ok.And then there is plastic surgery should you want to do it of course.
Dont worry about that yet. Some of us have lots of hanging skin and some have remarkably little.I am one of the unfortunates (lost and gained way too often and genetics is not on my side) but I love being thin.
