    Pre-Op Liquid Diet Day # 2

    So excited for you. I believe the hardest part is the pre-op liquid diet. But it is a great mental boot camp for your lifestyle change. Everyday remind yourself - that this liquid diet part is NOT forever. I am 5 months out..and I can barely remember the 2 weeks of liquids. Although at the time-- it felt really hard. I have no regrets having been sleeved. Every time I pass somebody who is obese - I just want to holler out to them and say - I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER- go get sleeved. It is a new lease on life. It makes weight just fly off your body--of course-you still have to make the right food choices. Good luck - keep us posted. And remember- if you are starting to get fed up and cranky---the liquid part is not forever.
  2. I hated the protein shakes too. But if i was gonna be successful with this -I decided I am going to follow all the rules given to me by my bariatric surgeon and nurtrionist. So I made myself like Bariatric Fusion shakes. Chocolate Mousse or chocolate chip with mint flavors are my faves. I made myself get aquired to the taste. I also use Slim-Fast- high protein version- has 20 grams of protein and low carbs.

    First date since VSG

    Well I have been married for several years and don't see myself going out on a first date with a new guy ever again. However, with this new weight loss...i feel like a new person. So I set up a "date" with my hubby. We haven't gone "out" in years. I felt nervous and excited. It was so fun. You are at a great place with the new you. So don't you settle for anything but the best. Be confident- that is the trait that men seem to admire the most. Love your self and be your self and it will be all good.

    Hydration

    I know it is hard. I went through the exact same thing. When I came home from the ER I decided - no matter what- i will get my fluids in. So for 2 weeks - literally non-stopped sipping water, light V8 juice, the low cal gatorade , broths and 2 protein shakes a day. I became very well hydrated. After that 2 weeks - I felt so much better and by that time was able to increase my calories. You are in a fragile post-op stage. Just concentrate on your fluids for the next 2 weeks- it will get easier. Doesn't it blow you away when you see people write that they eat pizza in week 2 or 3??????? I can't even imagine having pizza now and Im 5 months out. Keep us posted.

    Feeling like a brand new me!

    So happy for you and I don't even know ya! I am feeling like you. I have lost 94 pounds since January 14th. I feel reborn in all aspects of my life. Keep us posted on your Journey and all the exciting things that you will do on vacation that you would not have done before. Congrats to you girl!!!

    Underwear - Dare I hit Victoria Secrets?

    I have lost 94 pounds since my surgery on January 14th. I have not rewarded myself yet...but soon I expect to do something. I too have been excited about super sexy underwear.. I am a little bummed that my butt is sagging quite a bit and i think that is why i haven't spluged yet. I am exercising hard so hopefully I will be able to lift my booty. Reward yourself with clothes, or a new hair-do, a little vacation, a really good book, manicures/pedicures..............

    On Week 3 Post Op. Need some help!

    I am not intending to judge you or lecture. But help me understand...is pizza on your bariatric guideline? Did your surgeon give you a packet with a menu to follow? At 3 weeks post-op- I was still mostly fluids/ protein shakes/ greek yogurt and mashed up fruits and veggies. I just don't understand why you would eat food that is not going to help you move the scale downwards. Why did you have the surgery? I think you need to take advantage of psych counseling to help you through this. It really helped me with head hunger. It helped me change my behaviors. Love your self enough--to not try to see what foods you can get away with. Love your self enough--to make this surgery work for you and eat only healthy foods. You have come this far.

    Dumb question

    Soda isn't really allowed post-op. I follow the rules my bariatric surgeon has given me. Rum and vodka will be harsh on your new stomach. I am sure once in a great while wont hurt. But too much will cause ulcers. Beer/wine will are not as damaging to the new stomach lining - this is based on what my surgeon said, so that is only one man's words.

    Appetite Suppressants

    My insurance would not have approved my surgery if I had gained weight. It shows them that I was mentally prepared for this life changing surgery. Here are the things I did to help me get through the 12 weeks prior to my sleeve when I really wanted to overeat. Drank 8 to 12 oz of water before every meal and snack. What a difference that one thing made. Then after I ate the appropriate amount of food- I popped in a piece of sugar-free gum. There are flavors out now that taste like you just had an awesome dessert. I also increased the amount of fiber grams every day-- that gave me a feeling of fullness and contentment. You need to fight for your self. Don't let yourself even gain 1 pound. Get serious. Tackle head hunger now- before your next surgery. Because you don't want to overeat with the sleeve- don't let it be all for nothing. Good luck.

    My Story

    I am so excited for you. I have gone through very similar life path as you. I had my surgery in January 2013 and have lost almost 90 pounds as of today. I WOULD DO THIS SURGERY AGAIN IN A HEART BEAT. I wish I would have done it 10 years ago. Tomorrow- I have a rollerskating birthday party for my son. And this momma is getting on the skates too. Last year -at 290 pounds- no way would I have tried it. I have become that healthy and happy woman, that mother and wife that my family deserves. And it is AWESOME. I don't know you- but I know how you are gonna feel 4 to 6 months from now- and I am excited for you. Keep us posted on your journey.

    What to take?

    All i packed was clean underwear. The morning of my surgery i put on clean clothes and they were only on for a grand total of 40 minutes. While in the hospital- all i wore was hospital gowns, hospital pants, and hosptial socks. 4 days later when i was discharged- i put on the clothes i went in with. Easy peasy! I did take toiletries of course, and a journal to write in. I took lots of reading material but I was too nauseated for the first 3 days to read.

    HAVING TROUBLE

    What are the shakes you are drinking. I buy the bariatric fusion. Mint chocolate chip and chocolate mousse are my faves. I hated the shakes at first. But I decided I was gonna do this right - and I needed to grow-up and be mature about it. Now i actually enjoy the shakes. And the pre-op liquid diet is the hardest part in my opinion. But it is a great way to prepare you mentally to saying goodbye to the food for awhile. I did liquids for 2 weeks post-op too. Way easier. After surgery you are never hungry.

    Do protein shakes for about 10 days- I bet you get under 200 faster than u think. I had surgery 20 weeks ago. Started out at 264. Today I weigh 178. I really limit carbs and i work out everyday. Keep us posted. You can do it.

    How to get back on track!

    You seriously need professionals to help you on your journey. That has been the reason for my success- I believe that with all my heart. People always underestimate the power of a good behavior therapist. I don't think a juice fast will help you long term. You need to talk to somebody about why you eat the way you do. And then once those questions are answered - come up with coping strategies. Don't quit- don't give up on yourself. Don't buy that crappy food. If you had the sleeve - the great thing is that the appetite hormone has been greatly reduced in your body. So if you only eat the healthy -non-sugar foods - you will not be physically hungry. And it is not to late to stop what you are doing and start over again. Love yourself enough to give yourself a new start.

    Starving and full at the same time?

    Carbs make you hungry. Lose the sugar. You shouldn't be having sugar anyway. I never feel hungry. Never have tummy rumblings. I did read before in a bariatric book that people should have a large glass of water when they feel hungry and they shouldn't be- cuz they had food not to long ago. Often it is your body's way of telling you that you need water and you need hydration. But many people think it means they need food. Try it. It amazes me how that works. Good luck. Proccessed food isn't a great choice- like braunschweiger. Just sayin. Good luck. And please- I am not preaching or judging - just having conversation.

    nearly spilled the beans....

    I kept it a secret to. Of course my husband knows- and so do my parents and siblings. But everybody else- at work and all the other places I go- do not know. Mostly because I don't want everybodys opinion. I don't care what they all have to say. And forever- people pay attention to what you eat. I can't stand that. I work with other people that have had different wls and boy- people are all in their "plates". And now that I am looking thinner- I can't get over the way people talk about overweight people. I have always known- which is why I never wanted to leave my house at almost 300 pounds. But it amazes me - how everyday i hear horrible things being said about overweight folks. I say - keep it to yourself. Forever.

    Foodie question

    I don't ever plan on allowing myself to return to the world of carbs. They let me down in a BIG way. I won't let them into my new body. Ever.
  22. I didn't like the shakes either. But I decided to grow-up and be mature about it. I realized that they are packed with nutrients and protein and stuff the body really needs while losing weight rapidly. I am 20 weeks post-op and I still drink 2 of the bariatric fusion shakes per day. I have lost 86 pounds of weight. No hair loss. Cuz I get the protein in. I followed my surgeon's dietary recommendations to the letter. I have now adjusted my taste buds- and the shakes don't bother anymore. I am grateful for them. Good luck.
  23. I am starting my 20th week. I have lost 86 pounds. I wore a size 24 back at Christmas time. I went shopping at Macy's last week and squeezed into a size 10. I cried. My sister was with me and she did too. It was shocking. You need to stay out of Lane Bryant forever now. Other stores will carry clothes that fit you. Celebrate yourself. No more fat girl stores for you. The mental side will catch up to the physical side. That is what i have read a milllion times. Every day you have to focus on yourself. And only shop at regular stores. That is a big step in adjusting to your new size.

    Week 20

    I have completed 19 weeks of life after a sleeve gastrectomy. I am soooo happy I had this surgery and so far - I have no regrets. I have lost 87 pounds in 19 weeks. I truly believe that I could never have lost this amount of weight without the surgery. Life is better. In many ways. However, my husband and I need to readjust our relationship a bit. I think after a little more time we should work out our issues. I want my weight to get to 140 pounds. So I have about 38 pounds to go and it feels so attainable. I know I will reach that goal. And it won't be long. My personal goal is to reach that weight by the end of summer. I have June, July, and August. So - I will lose 12.5 pounds each month. And this fall I will be living a dream come true. 140 pounds. WOW. I don't have too much loose skin yet. My arms are seeing the worst of it -and it really is not too bad yet. And---it is way more awesome than having fat arms.

    This friday... and the mental battle

    I had so many of your feelings and fears. Very similar. I felt like I wrote your blog. The first few weeks after surgery I was very careful to not direct my anger toward my family members. It wasn't my husband's or my children's fault/choice/or decision to have this surgery. YOU must be clear with your self that this surgery is only for you. Because if it is not- you will struggle more. Every time you get mad at your husband - the urge to eat will be strong. You have to do the surgery - only for you. Or it won't be as successful as it could be. You really can't let yourself "wonder" if this is going to work for you. You HAVE to make it work for you. The surgery is only a tool that will give you a small window of time to break your bad habits and start your new life with better behavior techniques. Good luck and counseling with the right behavior therapist will absolutely help with your addiction. I enjoy sugarfree gum like there is no tomorrow. It really helps me with the head hunger and the mouth hunger. And it really helps with my addiction to food.
