I think some doctors are overly cautious because of fears that the extended release meds will release too quickly after the sleeve is done. I could see that as an issue with a bypass, but it seems a bit off when talking about surgery that did not monkey with the actual digestive process, just the size of the stomach.

Hi, Lizanne - I'm so sorry to hear you are having such a hard time!
I can't help you with regard to your medication - I think you're on the right track by calling your doctor tomorrow to discuss it.
I can tell you this, though: it's really not unusual to have bouts of emotion overload after major surgery - just do a web search and you'll find lots of reputable sites with articles about it linked to all sorts of major surgery. I found this site to provide some interesting basic information regarding post-operative depression: http://www.healthguideinfo.com/treating-depression/p88339/ There are many others. This surgery is a big deal, and there's plenty of stress, fear and uncertainty that each of us will face that could trigger the emotional rollercoaster. Hang in there - you'll get through this, and you can always come here to talk about it if you need to vent!

HI everyone, I had surgery on Monday the 15th, with a hiatal hernia repair. I had to stay in the hospital for a few extra days due to my potassium being very low. I did not have much pain and I have done everything I have been told. When I came home on Thursday I was fine, but since Friday I can not stop crying and i have bouts of such sadness. They told me prior to surgery that I would be able to take my Effexor ER capsule after and then decided to give me some other form of it 2x's a day. I KNOW this is what is screwing up my head. I can not do this up and down roller coaster and it is not due to wanting to eat or lack of fluids. Can anyone tell me if they were able to take Effexor ER after surgery, I have been reading some people open up the capsule and put it with applesauce or yogurt. I think I will do this tomorrow but I will be calling the Doctor first. Please any help you can give me or shine some light into my severe crying spells would be such a help.

ok, I was chatting with Oregondaisy last night about trying to find a Protein supplement that I could stand. I did find a Liquid Protein at GNC and she pointed out to me that I needed to make sure the supplements had whey Protein in them and not some other kind of protein. I don't know if this is any good or not, but this is what I found......
    Healthy Shot
    Double Protein
    2.5 oz
    Peach flavor
    Protein - 24g
    Calories - 100
    Total fat - 0g
    Carbs - 1g
It does contain Water, hydrolyzed whey protein and hydrolyzed collagen, amino acids, citric acid, vit c, flavoring among other things.
Is this good or bad? I know the whey protein is what I am supposed to be looking for, but what is bad about the collagen? I am confused.
Would appreciate any input - not opinions please, I need facts. It's confusing enough to sort out without having to figure out if the person who is writing it knows what they are talking about or not.
    Thanks

From my doctor's office they recommed the unflavored Unjury Protein Powder because you can add it to anything.

I found those protien shots at Walmart too I thought the fruit punch tasted very good. I heard somewhere that this is not a good source of protien....don't remember where I heard that. I forgot to ask my dr. about it. I'm realllllllllly confused about what protien is good and what is not! My surgery is in 2mos. Oh and thanks for all the info on samples I'm really excited now about ordering them!!!!!!!

I used the GNC brand of unflavored Protein powder. It's not completely unflavored though. I didn't find it made food taste badly though.

I bought my unflavored Protein Powder at GNC for the clear stage which I mixed with crystal lite. I thought posting a spot where people could buy samples would be a good idea, since so many people end up buying tubs of stuff they end up not liking.

GNC also carries a lot of supplements. I am partial to Jay Robb chocolate Protein powder shakes, which they carry. I also bought Isopure there.

I coud never get in all my Protein either. The only drawback is that you'll lose your hair. I lost a ton of hair. My hair was really thick, so it wasn't that big a deal. However, it did get me worried that it wasn't going to stop falling out. We'll, about 3 weeks ago, my hair stopped falling out. On my labs, I've had 3 blood draws since April of this year. My Protein was always off; however, just last week, my protein in now in the normal range.
For your own health, I'd try to drink a shake everyday. I didn't, I now wish I would have. My friend how had WLS lost a lot of hair, even though she got in all her protein.
As far as weight loss, I don't worry about it. I didn't lose a pound for 2 months, then I lost 2 lbs over night. We are all eating so little compared to before that we are bound to continue dropping lbs.
I am just so happy now. I've lost over 50 lbs and look great!! WLS is best the decision I've ever made. Take care! God bless you!!!

You are doing wonderful!! You can be more than hopeful, you are right on track! I was at almost the exact same place at 3 weeks out. Are you drinking Protein shakes? I had 2 and sometimes 3 a day for the first few weeks. If you mix them with Water, then it counts for Water and Protein. I keep a bottle of water with me at all times. Some people use timers to remind them to drink. I've put an alarm on my phone to remind me to take Vitamins.
Don't stress! Take a deep breath! Each day will get better and easier.

I started my liquid pre-op diet on Monday morning. I've dropped 7 lbs in 2 days! I have followed the diet as directed and I'm getting in all of my Protein and clear fluids... But, I am feeling somewhat weak and shaky, especially in the morning time. Yesterday, it subsided once I had a Protein Shake and some sugar free Jello. It is the same today. Just curious, does anyone else experience weakness and shakiness while on the pre-op liquid diet?
