Patrick Curl got a reaction from got2bthin in Whats Better Sleeve Or Ru En Y?
imho sleeve is better -because when I'm 60 or 70 I'm going to probably need to take a lot of medicine (don't all elderly people? hehe no offense to the youth challenged in here) but seriously- with RNY you don't absorb medicine correctly which means dosing you is going to be difficult - the doctor is going to try different doses and he could end up killing you with a lethal dose, or putting you in the hospital because your absorption rate isn't normal, or under-dose you and you end up in the hospital because the medicine isn't working as intended...
I'm thinking about my long-term health. The sleeve also doesn't have dumping and frankly I do not want to swear off my favorite foods for life, instead just till I reach goal. Also, I'm 650 so the sleeve is safer for me than rny as well.
Also the sleeve won't stretch like the bypass does. I've also read a lot of cases where the sleeve has actually been better in the long-run than the bypass -and a lot of bypass patients who've gained back a lot of weight.
Ultimately though it is a personal choice on how you want to live your life, and the malnourishment/absorption of vitamins/medicine/etc plus never being able to eat some of my favorite foods again is just not something I am wanting to live with.

Patrick Curl got a reaction from kczar in How To Have A "good" Food Funeral - Guilt-Free!
My thoughts on how to do a food Funeral the right way:
These are some thoughts I had today, about how to 'justify' having a food funeral and doing it the healthy way.
    1. Make a goal that you need to have 10 days this month that you eat under 1000 calories before you can have your food funeral. They don't need to be consecutive.
    2. Do not have any food funerals, do not eat any fast food - if you do - try salads MCDs has an awesome Southwest salad.
    3. Swear off Soda now, you're not gonna be able to drink it post-op, and it hurts the lining of your stomach - so it might make surgery go smoother if you just don't drink anything but Water from here on out (if you're like me and can't do Water, try propel - I love PROPEL! )
    4. Do it on YOUR terms -have a plan before you go in, on what you're gonna order and how much you're going to eat. Take a friend and split your entree with them, try eating less - and when you do eat take very small bites and practice eating the way you would post-sleeve. For instance I'm planning 1 food funeral before I go under.. till then I will try my hardest not to cheat - which I've done a pretty good job.
Normally when I go to my favorite restaurant I stuff myself full of wings - I eat about 15 - I'm going to order 7 next time and a side salad. It is still a lot of calories but its a smarter choice, and that's what this is all about!
When you do it on your own terms, you can't feel guilty about it because it's 'allowed' and it's not cheating. Plus this way you won't feel like you need to have one every day at all your favorite places, because it's almost like a challenge to do your best, then you get this one reward before surgery. It's also healthy to think that this isn't goodbye forever, you'll see that food again, it's goodbye for a hundred pounds or more... It's goodbye with court ordered time with the food every once in awhile but lot less amounts hehe...
Enough with analogies, that's just my thought on how to conquer some of the 'mental' stuff going into this surgery, and to still have your favorite food (but you will need to pick your most favorite, which I know can be hard hehe - but you can do it!)
Of course, I'm still a pre-op'er, I would love to hear some post-op'ers views on this.

I had my surgery on may 17th with Dr. Alvarez.. He put me on a one month pre op liquid diet starting 4-17 till surgery.. I'm not sure what my exact bmi was but I was 5' 7" and weighed 420. My day of surgery I weighed 365.. I lost 55 lbs on his pre op diet in one month.. Surgery went very well... He had no problem doing mine as long as I agreed to hold my end up with was his diet.. Here we are 3 weeks post op and down to 335...

That is so AWESOME, I am so happy for you... At the same time -- I gotta warn you now that it's a go, comes the anxiety of 'omg' what am I getting myself into lol.. but it's all good. hehe.
I'm getting so nervous of the surgery, the endoscopy, catheters, injections, will my liver be small enough.. I guess what I'm saying is now you're gonna start obsessing about the surgery day n night until you get it. lol So, uh welcome to my/our world!
But seriously, I really am thrilled for you, it's gonna be amazing to watch your journey, I know you can do this and be successful - just as I know that come July 2nd I'm gonna Rock the Sleeve.

Ok - when I met with the nutritionist she said that I will only be able to take a tiny bite or two and I'm trying to do that.. but a lot of times my subconscious takes over and is like hey I know how to eat, stop wasting mental energy on it..
I know post-surgery, I will need to eat VERY slowly, much smaller bites, and while my stomach is gonna be smaller, my mouth will be as big as ever lol - I am interested in what others went through in re-learning how to eat. I mean we learn how to eat as a baby, so it's practically instinct re-learning it seems like it might be difficult. I also am really bad at sipping throughout the day I usually chug 4 Water bottles in 3 minutes at 4 different times of day to get my daily Water intake...
I'm just thinking this is gonna be hard for me to change, and would like some insight from those who've been there, done that.

Patrick Curl got a reaction from sabstar22 in Lessons Learned At The Mexican Restaurant
So yesterday I did awesome - I had 4 SF pudding cups, 2 Protein packs(unjury), and Mcdonalds salad - 900 calories about. I also did a lot of walking.
Today I really wanted to eat out, but I didn't want to hurt my diet too much. We decided to go to our favorite mexican where normally we eat 2 baskets of chips and salsa, a Chimichanga, rice, Beans, and maybe an appetizer to share.
Well today we pushed the complimentary chips aside, and ordered 1 Shrimp, chicken, and Steak fajitas to share between us. We set the tortillas aside and halfed it and only ate the filling.
It was absolutely delicious - AND I really practiced my post-op mental stuff. I slowed down and paused between each bite, I chewed till it was like applesauce, I set my fork down between every bite. (I still drank w/ my dinner, I'll work on that next)
So I had 1026 calories today 26 over my goal, and learned an important lesson : I can eat at a good restaurant and do it healthily AND you save a lot of money when you share one plate with your spouse hehe..
We paid $12.95 including my Diet Pepsi not bad for the best Mexican restaurant in Ohio. I couldn't believe how satisfied I was - I felt pretty full too - which I think also has to do with my diet recently - all the Protein and low carbing.
The biggest thing I learned is that I can definitely do this. I have taken the responsibility and I am in control, not my mind, or the ghrellin in my tummy.
