I think the stretching may have to do with the size and shape of the two different pouches. I'm not too sure why bypass patients stretch more.
Also one thing that is important to think on is to look more holistically at your life. You are more than your waistline. You could lose 100 pounds and still be miserable. Especially when you're always feeling sick from malabsorption, or dumping or just the lifestyle of rny is harder to maintain. You need to see a doctor every six months for the rest of your life to have a Vitamin and mineral check to make sure your levels are in check.
You will probably also be spending $150+ per month just on Vitamins for the rest of your life. Also I love food and I selfishly am not willing to say goodbye forever to my faves. When I reach goal I can have those things again but I will never be able to eat the same quantity that I would before surgery.
So when you think about the surgery think about how you want to live once you reach goal, is it worth trading some of the pros of the sleeve for a couple months faster weight loss? In the first year you will probably lose 100 pounds and you still might have more to lose but I guarantee you will feel healthier and happier than ever before even though you are not yet at goal. I would be happy to reach 400 right now. 300 would be awesome so i can go to amusement parks again but I didn't put all the weight on in a year I can weight 2 years to get to goal, but you better believe I'm going to work the hardest ive ever worked in my life to get this weight off.
I wish you great luck in making your choice whichever you choose is better than doing nothing and I know you will make it to the losers bench.

Kimbernada hit the nail on the head with her pros and cons. I also didn't notice much negativity other than some strong opinions about why the sleeve is safer and such than bypass, but that is to be expected when 90% of the people on this forum have had or have chosen to have the sleeve done, or are preparing for surgery. We've all gone through the personal thoughts about which surgery to choose and its kinda funny how most of our reasons kinda overlap. I feel like sleevers are the people who research every little thing and ive literally spent three years lurking on band forums obesity help and this forum and for me this surgery and this support network are what I feel is going to help me be successful.

I am about 5 weeks out and I have also been making changes to my eating. I need to be on a full liquid diet for 2 weeks before surgery, but I am also starting Atkins on Monday morning (about 4 weeks pre-op) to help me drop some extra weight. I am really having a tough time with some of the co-morbidities associated with the weight I have gotten myself to and I am ready to feel better! I wish you luck and a smoooooth as silk surgery!

I must have missed something here because I didnt see any rude rampages, only a healthy debate, and a lot of good information. Considering this is going to be a pro-sleeve crowd, I'm not surprised most here favor getting the sleeve over RNY....as do I.

I kept reading through too and didn't really see anything, but maybe something was removed by the admin people? I've seen a couple really nasty threads so anything on here was pretty mild to me, lol. But its true that sometimes people get defensive on either side of whatever post is going on. Some people have a "tone" when they are replying to posts that are very condescending and "know it all-ish", but I think the majority of people on here WANT to be helpful and enjoy responding to people that are newer in this journey. Even though I've seen some people get really ridiculous, I still love getting on this site and gaining information from others going through the same thing I am.

I recently switched my upcoming surgery to the sleeve mainly because my hands have been reminding me that I have rheumatoid arthritis and I really need to take NSAIDs. (Aleve, Advil, etc.) It's been in remission for almost six years but work has been extremely stressful right now...
My best friend had the RNY two years ago and lost 92 pounds -- she's the "poster child" for the perfect gastric bypass patient. Okay, not literally, but she followed all of the rules and continues to take her Vitamins four times a day. I was gung-ho about also getting the RNY. I went to the info seminar and found out about the sleeve. It actually threw me for a loop because my brain was already on gastric bypass overload from my own researching. What?! There's something ELSE out there? (Don't tell anyone, but I almost had a panic attack at the seminar.) When I met with the surgeon a week later, I was still thinking RNY. The fact that the "dumping" would keep me from sweets was kind of appealing AND it seems like all of the books out there are geared towards people with the gastric bypass. I am a details kind of person, so give me something to read and I will.
Anyhow, in the back of my mind, I have had this nagging thought about the malabsorption thing... I am 43 and, right now, other than my back and knees hurting at times and having sleep apnea, I am fairly healthy (well, in my mind anyhow).
I am very thankful that there are discussion forums dedicated to either surgery as well as other forums for both surgeries.
This is my list of pros for both surgeries. Initially the RNY appealed to me because of the faster weight loss, but really, what's 24 months compared to 12-18 months? (This is the question that I ask myself to keep me in focus.) My only real concern with the sleeve is that there really isn't any long term study results available since the sleeve is still fairly new.
    Gastric Bypass Pros:
    Faster weight loss
Dumping (if you are a sugar fiend) - not that not dumping is also on my list as a pro for the sleeve

    Sleeve Pros:
No rerouting of the intestines (this kind of scares me)
Can take NSAIDs - Tylenol doesn't really do much for me and I get bad headaches in addition to RA
Weight loss is almost equal to the RNY at about the two year mark
    Virtually no malabsorption issues
No dumping (although some people experience this)
No leftover stomach to get potential ulcers that are hard to scope
Sleeve isn't as stretchable as the pouch

Good luck with your decision!! I think it is wonderful that we have choices.

You are STRONG and you WILL be successful! I am having surgery right before you on 7/23 and although I am nervous sometimes about the whole thing, I know that this is the answer to my obesity. I have to be on the liquid diet for 14 days so I too am going to the "Liquid Bootcamp". I am looking for ideas of things to eat during that time and hoping to make good progress before surgery to make it easier on me and my surgeon. I look forward to watching your progress and I will be here to congratulate you when you are joining the "Losers Bench"!!!

Tomorrow is my Medical Status Review where we'll be going over everything prior to scheduling an actual surgery date...I hope. If there is a date in my near future, I'm sure they'll be giving me a pre-op diet plan & I share whatever information I get.
In preparation for the coming event(s), I've already decreased my caloric intake, having gone from a 2,000+ caloric intake per day to 1,600. I find myself hungry between meals, or at least I 'think' I'm hungry. Old bad habits & thought processes are difficult to break. LOL.
I'm so ready for weight loss surgery to happen.

30 day liquid pre op diet!!! Wow, that is the longest I ever heard of. But you can certainly do it. My advice would be, be planful. Always know where your next meal is coming from. Don't let yourself get hungry and then wonder what your gonna have to eat. I never leave the house now without a shaker bottle and serving of my Protein powder. If I get hungry I can just pull over and buy a bottle of Water and mix me up a shake. The shaker bottles with the little wisk balls in them are the best. Just as good as a blender.
And think of your pre op diet like boot camp because it may be the hardest part. But you'll know that if you make it through that, the rest will be easy.

I finally decided that it was time to take action. One would have thought I would have decided this along time ago. How many times I told myself this diet was going to work, or this time next year I am going to be smaller yet the scale always said bigger. It feels weird to know that after August 4th there is just no going back. Not weird why am I doing this but, finally I can see some light at the end of this tunnel.
Hi, I am new to this forum and this decided life. I am married to my twin soul have 6 amazing kids with only one left at home. 2 of the cutest grandchildren one could ever have, Of course I am bias. A career that I absolutely love, one of the most blessed people I have ever met. Great friends, exceptional chosen family and the only thing I am missing from manifesting my PERFECT life is ...... weight loss.
I live in a world of manifestation, belief in what I cannot see, and an understanding that everything happens for a reason so I even get or feel that it was not the right time till now.
I am excited to start this journey and scared at the same time. What will be my excuse then? What kind of excuses can I come with in the meantime? What will I face? because I know this isn't all just fat, I have 240 extra pounds of emotions sitting on these bones.
I guess it all starts with permission. It all starts with a choice. My choice.
If you have any advice about my impending 30 day liquid pre op diet I would love to hear. Any great words of wisdom about what I am heading into I am all ears. I am at this point in the learning growing stage and look forward to anything that comes.

Hello everyone, as being a here at these boards for a long time I come to know some subjects tend to get a little heated with opinions. This happens to be one of them. Just remember these are just that... opinions. When it comes down to it the best thing to do is research facts and seek advice from your medical professionals with any decision you make.
Please all remain respectful when replying to any subject, we are all here to give support softly. Thanks in advance.

Actually you can dump with the sleeve, but it's not as common with the RY. I was told that if you have concentrated fat or concentrated sugar, you can bet you'll be revisiting that meal again. I do like with the sleeve that eventually you can have a bite or 2 of your favorite foods and from what I've heard from many people, is that will fill you up and keep you satisfied -- provided your tastes don't actually change. I've heard as we get into this journey, your taste for different foods may change.

What about diabetics? Is the sleeve just as good? I know a lot of people say RNY is better for diabetics. My sister and I are both having surgery and she has chosen RNY because of this. I do not want to try to undo influence her for a sleeve as she might feel unsupported for her RNY. Should I say something? I think the sleeve would be better for her too.

I have heard that RNY is has alot of complications and very dangerous in the long term and sleeve is much safer. Alot of people on this forum have lost 130 lbs. or more.

I know that all surgeons are different. All of them prefer one surgery over another. That's no surprise. But to my surprise, my surgeon wouldn't even recommend a surgery for me. He wanted me to choose. He gave me his opinion on each of them (and I think was a little offended when I told him that the RnY scares the crap out of me) but wouldnt tell me which way to go. I work with another surgeon who does lots of bands and some sleeves. She told me that she WILL NOT do RnY on anyone anymore because of the high risks and the malnutrition that happens with it. I get that malabsorption is the way RnY works, I just dont like it. I have around 190 pounds to lose and I am going with the sleeve. (Was a toss up between band and sleeve) I have done TONS of research. I know some people that have done really well with RnY and I know lots more that have had problems and gained lots of weight back with it. I think that the sleeve is the best way for me to go for my long term health. You have to decide for you. I am scheduled for surgery on July 27 and I absolutely can not wait. One thing I will tell you, if you do decided to go with a sleeve, this is an AMAZING place for support. The people on here care so much about one another and there so many that are willing to help out with questions and concerns. GOOD LUCK with your decision and your weight loss!

I am 2 months out and have lost 51 lbs. I chose the sleeve because of what most people said in here, I did not want my intestines re-routed. However there are people in my local support group that have the Rue N Y and have done great. My advise, like many others, do what you want to do, not your doctor. If you want the sleeve, do it. My experience in the healthcare business, in regards to why they are pushing it, is maybe the payout is bigger. I hate to be that way but I have seen it. Good luck!!!!!!
