Lately I've found myself wandering around the kitchen, opening the fridge and pushing around some leftovers. Then walking away without eating anything? That's a real change for me. In the past, I'd find something. Peanut butter/jelly on toast, or just toast with a cube of butter on it and so on.
I subscribe to a blog by Michelle May, M.D. and I received this today. It really makes sense and unconsciously I've been incorporating this into my daily habits. Seems to be working.

    Don't Pull That Trigger

Focus: Whenever you want to eat or continue to eat, that is your trigger to pause and ask, Am I hungry? or Am I still hungry? In essence, you are creating a new trigger for yourself - wanting to eat now triggers you to pause and check in. This pause creates a gap between the stimulus and response, allowing you to respond instead of react.
Explore: If you're not hungry, get curious! I wonder why I want to eat right now even though I'm not hungry. What was the trigger?
Accept: Don't judge yourself. You wouldn't judge a machine for having a switch! Instead, say, Hmmmm, isn't that interesting?
Strategize: Choose how you will respond. I could eat anyway if I want to. For now, I am not going to activate this particular sequence of events. Let's see...what else could I do until I'm hungry?
Take Action: Each time you choose not to pull the trigger, you weaken its connection. It's as if the wires rust and eventually break. Further, each time you choose a different action, you create new connections. With practice, you will hardwire these new pathways - like insulating the wiring.
    Eat Mindfully, Live Vibrantly!

    Nervous about what?
I think I was mostly nervous(afraid in my case) about how much I was going to miss taco bell, Coldstone, pizza, or even my own mexican food which is very good. My deep love of food made me fearful of how much I was going to miss it. I was never really afraid of the surgery or the process. I knew that would be a distant memory a few months after the surgery. The thought that I couldn't indulge myself with the foods I really loved scared me.
But, now I'm 6 months out and TaDa! I can eat those things if I want but I don't have to eat too much. And I'm good with that. Sorry to vent all over your thread but my advice is to think about all the wonderful things you'll be doing as a thin person. Don't worry, be happy!

MsDuran I am so happy that your hubby is home safely and that is an occasion well worth celebrating. No guilt needed there you have to live this new lifestyle I can't imagine not being able to drink champagne at my sisters wedding or having a occasionally drink on date night with my hubby. I think as long as I'm drinking responsibly(which is the rules for EVERYONE) know my limits, don't drink and drive..etc. I am will do fine. I know this forum isn't for this but...Good luck to you and your husband and I thank you for all your daily sacrifices for my security.

Sojourner...you say "we were all told by our surgeons..."
That irked me. How do you know what my surgeon told me or msDuran's told her?
To the OP...1 glass is not the end of the world...next time for each 1 glass of wine, have 2 glasses of Water. Don't think to drive because you don't know how it might affect you differently.
As for the calories...alcohol converts straight to sugar in your blood stream so use in limited quantities.
Forgive yourself and be kind to yourself...there's enough people in this world just waiting to take you down that you don't need to help them with it

Your doctor should have told you what to do about taking time off work. For every EGD I've had, I was told not to drive, operate machinery, make important decisions, or sign any legal documents for 24 hours after the procedure, because of the sedation given. You'll need to bring an adult with you.
The procedure itself is quick - maybe 5-10 minutes - but the prep (checking you in, putting in an IV, waiting for the doctor) and the recovery (waiting for you to wake up enough to get up, get dressed, and walk out.
What to expect: check in, be put in a curtained cubicle, change into a johnny, lie on a gurney, have an IV put in, talk to the anesthetist, and wait for the procedure to start. Be wheeled into the procedure room, say hi to the doctor, be rolled over on your side (usually the left side), and lights out when they start the sedation. Wake up in your cubicle, talk to the nurses and doctor, get your discharge instructions, get dressed, go home. You might have a sore throat from the scope.
Doing an EGD is a way for the doctor to get the lay of the land (so to speak) in your upper GI tract. He/she might find a hiatal hernia that needs to be repaired during your band placement. They'll look for any other structural abnormalities in your esophagus and stomach, and for signs of disease, like ulcers, that might need to be treated before your surgery. I've never heard of anyone being disqualified from band surgery because of the findings of an EGD, so you need to ask your doctor about that.
Edited to add: Also, don't drink or eat anything after midnight the night before unless your doctor says it's OK to take a medication (like blood pressure meds) with a tiny sip of Water.

Jean laid it all out good:) Just had mine last Wednesday and it was a breeze. Took a nice "nap" and woke up fine with no sore throat. Had the hubster drive me home and I was starving by the time we were finished. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight, and I did not get out of there til 3 something. You will do great!!

You are doing so great I am so excited for you. I just love your optimism and your attitude towards the whole process. I am hoping to maintain that positive attitude thank you for you story it's very motivating. I too hope to reduce the amount of meds I take daily. my medicine cabinet is full and I have so many pills to take daily. I still in the waiting game just keeping myself busy and focusing on the skills I will need after I am banded.( drinking Water, chewing well, eating slow....) Good luck

    Good Afternoon!
I am a newbie to banding and this forum! After the better part of a year preparing for surgery, I was finally approved and had my surgery on April 26th of this year! Amazingly enough my blood pressure and heart rate both dropped to healthy levels within the first two weeks! My doctor reduced my blood pressure medication by half and looking to take me off of it completely very soon. YEA!!!!
I expected the worst post-op, but the journey has actually been quite easy for me. Approximately two weeks post-op, I began to have issues and had to start taking two to three stool softeners every evening, but I suspected that would happen sooner or later! I made a bad choice, this past weekend, and took DRY chicken breast on my fishing trip. I instantly learned the meaning of "stuck" in a matter of moments! Luckily the dry chicken breast decided to finally pass through my stoma and let me return to some level of normalcy! Pretty wild moment when I realized I was two miles offshore and didn't know how to handle food stuck in my stoma!! What a learning curve!
I WAS supposed to receive my first fill today, but when the doctor realized that I've dropped 54 lbs since the 26th of April, he decided to leave my band as is for now. I've been a big guy my entire life, so dropping 54lbs so quickly has given me a ton of energy and the desire to be active and exercise. I weighed 395lbs pre-op and have set my goal as 225lbs. This might be a lofty goal, but I am definitely motivated and up for the challenge!
It is nice to meet everyone and looking forward to reading about your experiences, challenges, battles, and victories!
    Dennis

Yay for you! I was banded on 5/23 I started solids on day 5, tuna and green Beans. My surgeon told me today to eat in the following order: lean meat, veggies cut it small and chew the heck out of it. I am having no issues and spent the entire day shopping :-)
