K33 got a reaction from hopeful one in DVD Has anyone found a exercise that an over 60 can use?
If anyone is rolling her eyes about SIT AND BE FIT, it looks innocuous enough, but is quite a workout.

Thats right, it CAN happen. Gotta stay on top of things, and not let it get beyond 2-4 pounds or it is not only disheartening, but hard to get off. I gained 22, then took almost a year to get it off. REALLY trying not to have that happen again!

I love the way I look people in the eyes, smile, and greet them with a big hello. Other people have noticed this, too. Why just today, a man told me he used to be afraid to talk to me because I was quiet and shy and he was afraid I would break down and cry. Now when I look at people and start a conversation, I feel a sense of freedom because I know for a fact they cannot reject me based on size alone anymore.

K33 got a reaction from JustWatchMe in Do you hope to get smaller than your goal? Why or why not?
Twenty years ago I dropped to 111 pounds at 5ft 4in. You could see all my ribs on my back! I looked deathly ill.
Ten years ago, I weighed 150 pounds through of OA. Today I am at 150 pounds, at 9 mos out. My surgeon did not give me a goal. I am very happy about that. It would be a way I would sabotage myself.
I still have a large bra size (though I sag to my waist - LOL). I was 44 J (yes, you read that right) and am now a 35 H. My blouse size was 3x and am now down to a Large. Pants size was 22 down to a 12 now.
I had my eyes on 135 # as a security blanket goal to prepare for the rebound which statistically happens between years 2 and 3.
However, to keep my goal manageable, I've settled on 143 # as my new goal. 7 pounds seems manageable whereas 10 # does not.
I can hear my surgeons short, but potent piece of wisdom; "carbs are how you gained weight, exercise is how you will maintain your new weight."
Cheers, everyone, to all of us brave and courageous folks who made a commitment to take on a new way of life.
Regardless of your weight or dress size,
you are becoming more and more healthy with everyday.

K33 got a reaction from LindafromFlorida in What do you miss most after Weight Loss Surgery?
I miss club soda. However I think I drank it because I had GERD and did not know it. It helped settle my stomach. I miss being able to eat extremely fast, and eat so much that I fall asleep. I notice now I am more sensitive and my feelings are more easily hurt. Guess the armor of my fat served a purpose after all. I would do the surgery over in a second.

I once did the math to figure out how to drink 64 oz of Water per day. Taking into consideration the rules for not drinking around my 3 meals/day, I must drink 6 to 8 oz EVERY HOUR.

K33 got a reaction from LindafromFlorida in Any More Sixties?
I thought it only fair to give everyone an update. My surgery was August 5th 2013. up until the day of my surgery, I gave myself permission to back out anytime.
my surgeon was excellent, my recovery was flawless, and I managed to stay on the ridiculous trail of liquid mushy hat we must all consume so that our stomachs will heal
around months four, which coincided with my ability to eat normal food, my weight loss stalled. Well,.l not exactly a stall more like a stop. I enjoyed being able to eat again
then around months 7 I realized my 1 year was approaching faster than I had anticipated.I panicked that I was sacrificing my window of opportunity to lose wt for sense pleasure. once I started eating Protein, drinking enough Water at only the appropriate times as well 20min walks until I started to sweat, I dropped more wt in 10 days than I had durinf the prior 3 mos. Once I saw the magic returning, I really committed. I believe our journey requires us to reconnect many times along our path. Today I had 1/2 a slice of Apple pie. when I eat too fast and forget I have a small stomach., my stomach actually hurts. I have been tolerating a sore stomach for so long that I figured that's just the way it is. but when I followed the ritual of Protein first then fuits or vegetables, and pay attention to my stomach, I don't overeat and I don't have pain. Oh, I have released 80 # from the start of my journey. 60# since surgery, and hope for 10 to 15 # in tje next 3 mos and will be satisfied.

Kitt3000 I do spend more time online. I read ferociously when it comes to bariatric pal posts. I am addicted to checking the time, but mostly because of the restriction of drinking around Meal Time. I am NOT drinking more caffeine before pre op, but I do have one cup per day postoperative. And finally, my addiction to dogs is intense and I have no plans to give it up. There is nothing like rubbing the belly of a dog or scratching their head behind the ears.

From my experience reading these boards, I've read again and again not to compare your progress with anyone else's. It only sets you up for failure. Someone will always be "faster" than you, and you will always be "faster" than someone else, so it is all relative. I only speak from my experience on the boards because I am preop and scheduled to get my surgery date July 2013. My dietician reminds me that eating Protein first acts kinda like a plug to the stomach to make you feel fuller longer. I also use FitPal to log all my food. It shows how much protein I'm getting, etc. I wish you good luck. I am 62 and hope to have VSG this summer.

I love this thread. We teens of the 1960's are still behaving radically and shaking up the status quo by having WLS "at our age." And as one kind member reminded me, we still have 30 years to go!

I am 62, 5'3, weighed 214 at surgery on Aug 5th. I've released 16 # in 24 days Averaging 4# a week. Since I am still on purees, I won't expect more than 4# per week going forward w/o exercise
I'm still somewhat fatigued (like walking against a strong wind with 50# boots on.) Looking forward to 6th week when I've heard energy returns

I think I understand what you're talking about. The change is a lifetime change. We all heard that but couldn't really know what that meant. The first year is exhilarating and fascinating and scary kinda like a roller coaster: up, down and fast and slow. The second year, yup. I'm right there. Time to stop losing. How will I work that? I think what you're defining is effort. Everyday on this joinery there's a choice about how much effort and where to put it. I'm kinda over the body as a project. I want to maintain my effort. My lifestyle but I'm ready to be on the other side of plastics and at goal. Recovered and maintaining. That kind of relaxation.

Yesterday I was out with my wife and she drew my my attention to a man with a large belly.
She said, "That is just what you used to look like."
"Yes, and you used to constantly tell me to pull my jacked-up shirt back over my belly!" I said.
"You haven't bugged me about that in a long time!"
"Yes, I know!" she said with a big smile.
She didn't want me walking around with half a hairy belly sticking out, I didn't think I could help it.
The shirts I bought fit fine when I bought them, washed once they became belly shirts.
I literally walked around with both hands stretching the shirt down over the beach ball so I wouldn't get the needle from her.
Of course, she didn't like that either.
Now the silence is golden. I no longer own a shirt which instigates a Jerry Springer scene.

K33 reacted to Ducker in Increased water+protein= 11pound this week!
I am happy to report that by employing this strategy (upping Protein and water) I still can't manage to get to 120 oz. of Water, but I am getting to between 90-100 and it's working! As far as protien, I make it a point to never consume less than 100 gm /day. With these changes I am now losing about .5 lb/day. From what I understand this is great for a person that is nearly 1-1/2 yrs. out. I am so excited about this renewed progress. I can't thank you enough for sharing this Tamara S! It has literally turned my world around. My new aim is to be at goal by my birthday (May 17th). If I keep going at this rate, this is totally feasible.
