tjmom...I am also amazed to hear your story, and how well you are doing, able to get around without the wheelchair again, and amazingly able to regain your sense of being able to take control of your destiny, your life. This surgery has helped so many of us that were feeling out of control for so long.
Good luck, you are doing fantastic!!

Congratulations to all of you for your weight loss.....and.....good luck to you that are scheduled for sleeve surgery... It is a fantastic tool to getting healthy again.
I am 59..... 5'3" and started at 328 (pre-surgery) and 294 on day of surgery (May 2) & today the scale said 234... ((94 total & 60 since surgery)) I feel so good.
If some of you don't know about my story, i started out in a wheelchair (back-knees-hip-hands arthritis) my weight did not allow me the ability to walk, my body would just collapse & buckle. I would end up falling after about 10-15 steps.... WELL: I no longer use my wheelchair around the house at all. I use a walker when we go shopping because there are times that my back still gives out and when i have to sit down, its like right now-no time to look for a chair. So that works best....I don't even think about the chair anymore and i had been using it for over 5 years.
Sorry to go on and on, but i just want you all to know the surgery works. Yes there are bad days, when foods don't sit well at all. I had diarrhea for a long time and NUT said to add a banana every day.. OMG - There are SO MANY carbs in a banana!!! but if it works, i will continue. (started Wednesday)
    Rambling again... sorry
you all have a fantastic weekend!

tjmom got a reaction from Butterthebean in Nsv... I Went From 5:45 Am To 5 Pm Without Using My Wheelchair...
Just wanted to tell you the motorized chair has dust on it! I haven't used it at all in about 2 months. My back was hurting so bad a couple weeks ago, when i got out of bed I walked right to my chair...Sat in it...then just smiled! I got up and walked away! the reason i was so sore, was i am now doing our house cleaning...BECAUSE I CAN!!!! so i smiled all day about being sore from "doing something" instead of being so heavy my back could not handle the pull of my tummy fat!
I have lost over 50 inches total from my body. I measure:
    L & R ankle
    L & R calf
    L & R thigh
    butt
    waist
    chest
    L & R wrist
    L & R forearm
    L & R upper arm
    neck
Surgery was May 2 - so the 2nd of each month I take my measurements. ((just from my waist I have lost 6 inches)) ... so when the scale doesn't move, I know my body is shifting and catching up with my new lifestyle..
I have gone from a 28 (all elastic) pull up jeans to a "real" jeans with zipper and button in a size 16 or 18 depending on the manufacture...
Life is good! thank you all for listening !

Today was a milestone for me... I have used a motorized chair off and on for 5 years ..but all day/every day (24/7) for the last 3 years...Reason: i have had 2 back surgeries (have some disc fused) & have arthritis in my back, hips and knees (to name a few) ...Doctor wants to replace both my knees, but that's another post.
Since my WLS, i have tried to walk a bit everyday...at first, just around the island in the kitchen... Then from one end of the house to the other... Last Monday i added short, slow walks outside with my husband...(he would ride in my motorized chair in case i needed it). The walks gave me the confidence i needed...
Today, when i woke up, i said, "lets see how long we can go today without using the chair." well, i went from 5:45am to 5 pm...i was so happy, i cried when i told my husband after he got home from work... (he thought i hurt myself...sweet man, so caring)
Physically, I am very sore....but mentally i feel GREAT!
    Thank you for listening

Amy, there are a few things to consider here.
    The video you were watching,
    1. how far post-op was the poster?
    2. how much weight was lost?
    3. How old was she?
Keep in mind, your skin will continue shrinking for 2 years, possibly longer.
Yes, you will likely deal with loose skin in the earlier stages, but the loose skin you see 6months out will still shrink a lot. I'm not saying it will all go away (though it might). But if you really want to see what the reality of loose skin is, you really should be looking at people 2 years post-op, and still as you already know no two people are the same.

I've lost around 120 pounds and the excess skin does bother me a bit. BUT, being healthy and able to do whatever I need to do (walk, run, work like a mule for hours) makes up for that mostly. I'm only truly self-conscious about my apron, and even that is improving little by little. I might have a Tummy Tuck. I might have a boob lift, but mostly I'm thrilled with how I look. I'm definitely thrilled to still be alive today!!! Excess skin isn't much to deal with compared with not being alive, IMO. And I was headed for dead before!

Due to all my "train wreck" issues , i started my process in a wheelchair, (motorized chair in house) for the past 4-5 years.
I have had 2 back surgeries and am still in constant pain. I also have arthritis and doctors want to replace 1 hip and both knees. (already had joints in hand fused to try and stop the joint pain). I have asthma, diabetes and depression... so my weight is a contributing factor.
I had the sleeve done on May 2, 2012... my diabetes is now controlled by diet only (i was taking 3 medicines daily).. I no longer use motorized chair in house and with the help of a walker, i am able to weed the flowerbeds for the first time in 15-20 years...
do i exercise? not in the way most people do...but i am able to walk...cook meals...do laundry... All these things bring my heart rate up and make me sweat! So for me, they ARE exercise...
I have gone from 294 to 244 (-50 lbs) and a total of -50 inches... Went from pant size 28 to 16 (stretch jeans) 18 (non-stretch) from top size 4-5x to 1x...
so yes, you can lose weight without exercising... good luck

i was almost bedridden ...i used a motorized chair in the house...wheelchairs when out and about..(if my husband talked me into going somewhere)...
I always thought I was 5'5"....so when i went for my WLS consultation, that is what i told them... they weighted me 328 and told me my BMI was to high for laproscopy so I needed to lose weight before surgery if i didn't want a big scar... so i lost weight... at time of surgery i weighed 294...BMI 49... ok for laproscopic surgery....
*****update: during my sleep study assessment, they told me i am 5'3"... so technically my BMI was still to high *****
    anyway:
prior to surgery: Diabetes out of control (on 3 med with A1C still a 10)....almost bedridden ... wheelchairs or motorized chair...had housekeeper come in to clean and do laundry...
since surgery: Diabetes A1C 6.6 with NO medication...(controlling with diet only) ... out of bed with husband in morning and NO naps.... NO motorized chair in house at all.... I do our cleaning and laundry.....I even weeded a flowerbed for the first time in 15-20 years ..(using walker for resting between pulling weeds) ... when i go shopping with him, i still use my wheelchair depending in how far we are going... never fear, in time i will be out of that also..
AND... have lost 50 pounds and a total of 50 inches! Doctor said because of diabetes I will lose slowly but we are happy with my results .......I use to wear size 26-28 (elastic waist) pants ...now...wear size 18 (zipper and button) jeans! AND... went from 5x to 2x tops!!!
your sister can be helped! i give you permission to share my story with her...
good luck to both of you!
