I too had to had to measure my success in other ways this week. It is so easy to fall back into negative thinking and overeating....thanks for reminding me that I have to regroup...even if that means an everyday mantra!

You're the designated replier to all those topics people post that they are so sad and frustrated that they had surgery 3 weeks ago, had not lost weight for 2 days and gained 1 lb. K?

The mental part of this journey is the hardest part. Like everything else, it takes patience and persistence, but you'll get the hang of it after a while. You've done great so far, so just hang in there!

I waited to have a glass of wine until I was back on solids and cleared by my surgeon to eat whatever my band would tolerate. Alcohol is not encouraged by my surgeon because of the empty calories, but it is allowed in moderation. If you want to be safe, clear it with your doctor first.
Two words of caution though. Because we eat less now, the alcohol has a more potent effect on some people that before banding, so sip slowly. Also, restaurants routinely pour glasses of wine that are 6-8 oz. each. One actual serving should be no more than 5 oz, and wine lover that I am, at home usually pour myself only 3 oz, and it's plenty!
    Enjoy your date night!

sometimes those who lose (faster) are a lot bigger than the others who are just starting (aka me for one).....and its now I am at when the majority people have surgery...each person is different and will lose different and be different. I compare myself daily to everyone on this forum (those with fills for example, could I be doing better if I had one??)......we be our own worst enemy. part of that diet mentality we were brought up with I guess. YOU my dear are doing super duper fantastic. GREAT JOB.

Obesity is at epidemic proportions in this country. Not that this is a disease any of us want to have, but at least we're in good company :-)
Coming to terms with this issue has been a life long process for me. And at 57, I still haven't come to terms. I thought if I could only accept myself this way, then I could take the pressure off and move on with my life. But I can't; never have, never will. But after so many years with large swings in weight, I know this is a disease; one that MANY of us are predisposed to.
There will always be the idiots that do not understand. I've found that the "can't you just eat less and exercise more" mentality, with harsh judgements seeing us as weak, come from people that I wouldn't want in my inner circle whether I'm fat OR thin. But anyone with a half of brain, who lives in this culture, should see and understand that it's just not that simple. As you say (morelgirl), if it were that simple, no one would be overweight.
I think it's great that you're finding the self control to walk away from conversations without a good outcome. We can't change the way the world thinks, but we can take care of ourselves, and move away from the ignorant. I have enough work to do, without feeling the need to control/change the thoughts and opinions of others.
Thanks for the post. It hit a nerve with many of us.

I agree with everything you said, but especially this: "The band doesn't fail people; People fail the band."
Unless you had an incompetent surgeon who placed the band incorrectly, or you're one of the extraordinarily rare people who had a mechanically defective band, the band works. Or maybe I should say the BAND PROGRAM works, because nothing is a magic cure for obesity, not even the band (or sleeve, or bypass, for that matter). The band is simply a key component in a system that involves eating less, eating more wisely, eating healthier, and moving your body more often. You can't just pick and choose which of those pieces of the system you're going to actually do. You have to do them all.
If you don't, you won't lose weight. But the band didn't fail; the bandster did.

Also keep in mind that the lapband doesn't start working until it starts to fill up. The first month after surgery is about healing, not weight loss. That's the reason the time between surgery and when you get filled to restriction is called Bandster Hell. Even your first fill won't necessarily bring you the restriction you need to really start losing weight. I know it's hard (trust me, I'm there right now) but the key now is patience and determination. You WILL get through this, and you WILL start to lose weight. You can do this!
