  1. The first 24 hours are the worst, after that you will actually feel yourself feeling better by the hour! Welcome to your new life.
  2. I have been drinking one bottle of Isopure for 40 grams of protein every day, and I have also been drinking a 25 gram protein shot. I have heard that the protein shots are the "wrong" kind of protein but my NUT said they are ok. I also have very little energy. I am ok for the first hour or two after I get up in the morning, but after that I am bushed. I am anxious to hear what the old pros say about this.
  3. I never thought I would have this problem! I had my surgery July 22nd and as of this morning I have lost 28 pounds since surgery and 22 on the liquid 10 day diet before. I feel really weak and tired and I am wondering if it is coming off too fast. Is that possible? I am still on full liquids and following the diet religiously. My goal is to lose 115 pounds.
  4. This was my number 1 reason for doing this surgery. I am a type 2 diabetic and extremely insulin resistant. I was taking over 200 units of insulin plus metformin plus glyburide and still had sugars in the high 200s-300s. During my 10 day pre-op diet my sugars dropped into the 60s and my doctor took me off the metformin and cut my insulin to 20 units a day. Now post-op 10 days and only on the 20 units of insulin and the doctor says he will probably take me off that this week.
  5. I had my first post-op visit today, 5 days out. I have lost 10 pounds since the surgery and added to the 23 pounds I lost on that famous liquid pre-op diet, I am down 33 pounds in just over two weeks. Hiccups are finally gone and everything else is going great. I get to start creamy soups on Friday, I will never look the same at Jello! Oh, and the doctor presented me with photographs of my surgery. 9 different shots as he went along and a lovely one of my old stomach showing how big it was. Nice gesture, but am I supposed to frame it and put it on the living room wall??? Actually my wife was thrilled. She is a big scrapbooker and she has been taking pictures of the whole process (including one of me in he hospital quite heavily medicated that isn't too flattering). Now she has pictures of the actual surgery to add to her layouts. I am sure that they will be prize winning at her next scrapbook convention!
  6. Don't fprget the sleeve BROTHERS!
  7. YES! I had them too! I just was sleeved 5 days ago and had them almost continously for the first two days. The doctor told me today that it is caused by irritation to the valve at the bottom of the stomach where it meets the diaphragm. There is nothing you can do for it but just ride it out. I just took my Lortab and went to sleep. The hiccups then bothered my poor wife, but I was in La-La-Land and didn't care! Be really careful and eat and drink VERY slow and after a couple of days they will go away. But while you have them I must agree they suck!
  8. My doctor said the same thing, in fact, today when I went in for my 1st post-op visit he showed me pictures. It was HUGE! No matter I was fat, having to fill that enormous thing up each time I ate.
  9. I had no problem getting out of bed. They told me in the pre-surgery counseling to roll to my side then put my legs over the side of the bed, push myself up with my arms and just sit there for a few moments then stand up. I have more trouble getting out of my recliner. Good luck.
  10. My surgery was on the 22nd very late in the day. I didn't get to my room until about 11pm and they got me up to walk at 2am. I did ask for a dose of pain medicine after the walk. They gave me Demerol in the IV. I think this pain was just from the actual surgery not necessarily the gas. I never did have gas pain. The second day right before I went home I got hiccups and they hurt like (insert your favorite expletive here)! My doctors advice was to take the liquid Lortab to cover the pain. I had to take it three times when the hiccups returned. I have been two days free of hiccups and pain medicine and I woke up yesterday feeling like a new man. I cleaned our pool and took out the trash before my wife even woke up! I have all sorts of co-morbidities but I can't believe I am off some of my meds already. I had to do a 10 day liquid diet before the surgery and I am glad I did, it sort of prepared me for the post op diet. My advice is to follow every rule they give you and to walk, walk, walk. Just laying around makes you weaker and sorer.
  11. I thought they would never get to me. I was told to be at the hospital at 11am for 12:30 surgery. I guess there were a couple of emergencies and I didn't go to surgery until after 6. My poor wife was a mess and broke down and told me she didn't want me to have it done. Then the nurse told her it took about an hour and I was in the OR for three hours. How she kept it together through that wait I don't know. All is good now and it is just a minor bump in the highway to a new and better life.
  12. My surgery date was July 22. I am so glad I found this board. I wish I had found it pre-op, it has been so good to read that somebody else is feeling just like me.
  13. Honestly, the liquid pre-op was much worse than the post op. I am on day 4 and I can not believe I am not at all hungry. But I must say when I am back to eating regular food I might never eat Jello again.
  14. I have been able to crush the Abilify, but not the Cymbalta. I need to call my psych tomorrow and see what he says.
  15. Try Powerade Zero. No calories but all the other stuff is there.
  16. I have a four year old granddaughter who is with us 4 days a week. My wife explained the whole procedure to her, how the doctor was going to do an operation to make Grandpa get skinny. The night before the surgery she told me, no more popsicles Yampa. You are going to get skinny so we can play soccer. She visited me in the hospital and the IV and monitors seemed to scare her a little bit, she wouldn't come and sit on the bed with me. My biggest problem is my wife, she has been losing weight steadily over the past year by diet and it down 75 pounds, but is afraid to eat in front of me. Now our kids are afraid she is going to become anorexic!
  17. Most insurances require that you have 6 consecutive months of a doctor supervised weight loss attempt. That means that your doctor documents it in your chart each and every month that you are working on losing weight. I think that it has to be in the past year also to count. Once you actually start to do all the requirements it seems like almost a full-time job, but stick with it and you won't regret it. Good luck.
  18. I am bi-polar also and very stable. On Abilify and Cymbalta. The first doctor I went to said a flat-out no, saying a Bi-Polar person could never handle a band or sleeve. After leaving his office practically in tears my wife and I decided that that was the end of the road. I talked it over with both my psychiatrist and my primary care and they both disagreed with that surgeon. I waited a couple of years and tried again with anothr surgeon. I saw his psychologist and he said he saw no reason whatsoever I wouldn'/t be successful. Well to make a long story short I was sleeved 3 days ago and so far I couldn't be happier. Try another surgeon! Good Luck.
  19. Now two days post-op and almost 12 hours without hiccups! Todays problem seems to be how to get all the protein in. I am a guy and was told I need 70-80 grams of protein. I have the Isopure and it will give me 40grams if I can drink the whole bottle. With the nothing to drink 30 minutes before a meal, during a meal and 30 minutes after, and the no more than 4 ounces of liquid an hour I don't see how I can do it. Any ideas?"
  20. Had the surgery last night at 6pm. Have had the hiccups off and on all day today. The last spell lasted 2 hours. Is VERY painful. I was doing fine with no pain meds until the hiccups started. I asked the doctor about it when he came in to discharge me and he just said to take the Lortab. Well, it doesn't hurt as much, but the hiccups are very annoying and I can't take Lortab forever. Anybody else have this problem?
