I'm a year out, and I had been stalling for months. I couldn't figure out why. After a lot of effort and no results, I decided to do something different. I read some articles that said the calorie count reported on a food label can be off by as much as 20 percent. That shocked me, but it got me thinking that maybe my calorie count was wrong.
And I think I was right in that. To be more accurate, I bought a food scale in August (I wanted it for my birthday),and I bought a lot of tiny bowls. I even bought a tiny casserole type bowl that can go in the oven and has a lid. All of this helped me get a better handle on my portions and calories.
The biggest thing that shocked me? I thought my full fat cheese snack was 1 ounce and turns out I was eating 3 ounces. scales can help..

I never met a cheese I didn't like. It is hard to stop at an ounce, but doable. I mix full fat cheese in with mini light baby bell, laughing cow wedges (they come in all kinds of flavors) and light string cheese.
I think us, the formerly obese, do have to practice due diligence with food portioning. Like I said in my last post, I will be weighing myself and measuring out portions for the rest of my life. I will also be eating high Protein and pretty much eating how I am in the losing phase with a few added in healthy carbs. I love my diet the way it is now. I used to eat all kinds of crap - even if I wasn't really crazy about it just because it was there. I mean, who really, truly likes Hot Cheetos? I'd rather have a steak or some shrimp cocktail!
You are definitely a role model. You saw yourself slipping and nipped it in the bud. We're proud of you!

similar thing happened to me after 1 year, I gained 7 pounds back, freaked out, cut back lost them all plus a few. So I am back to my low weight. I weigh myself at least twice per week. I will not gain my weight back. Its not an option, I happy to report "trying" to cut back post-sleeve is so much easier post op. Get those 10 pounds off, you know how... :-)

But look what you did do... you didn't have food to turn to so you turned here. That is definitely a positive step. I'm sure there are many of us that have had to endure breakups while struggling with our weight. Lean on others when you need, stay strong. There is nothing wrong with talking to your doctor if you feel overwhelmed. Even call the doctor you went for your psych consult. That doctor would have the background potentially with weight issues and depression. Take care of yourself.

This is the first time I have had a bump in the road after VSG surgery. I lost weight, didn't sweat the stall, etc. and I have had a lot of success. My weight loss stopped at about 9 months. The doctor said it was to be expected because I was so close to my goal weight. He seemed pleased. This summer I stopped weighing myself because I was on vacation and away from my scale. Then I was afraid to look. When I finally looked I realized I gained about 10 pounds. I am so disappointed in myself. I think I developed some bad habits that don't work when you are at a healthy BMI. For example, I have always eaten a large amount of cheese, not lowfat. It was fine as I was losing weight but I think it may be too fattening now. I have retained most of my good habits, regularly walking, mostly Protein, etc. But now I find that foods I was avoiding can be consumed, like bread or chips. Although I don't often eat it, I have had it on occasion. Which I never while I was losing weight. I am trying to get back on the protein only wagon and lessening my cheese intake but I am pretty discouraged that I gained so much weight back so fast. Prior to surgery I wouldn't gain that much weight so quickly. I am so freaked out that I will return to my old ways. It has happened to others with VSG surgery where they have gained a significant amount of weight back, I have witnessed it with friends who have had the surgery. I want this to work. I have been such a good patient prior to this and was so proud of my progress. Now I understand the whole "Honeymoon" phase. It's over and I am so scared! I feel like I did prior to surgery when I was on a diet. Anxious, full of self hate and obessing on dieting. Ugh! I hoped this would not happen to me! I hope there is someone out there who got through a setback like this. I am hoping to diet and exercise my way through this, but I won't go back to shakes. They make me gag.

I have to thank you for sharing and being so honest. Everything you shared are things that I have worried about facing in the near future. One of the things that I added as a tool was to join Overeaters Anonymous. It has helped me to recognize my triggers and make better decisions when presented with bad choices/temptations. Recently, I had a plateau that was more about my eating than my body adjusting. Going back to OA strategies helped me get back on track and I dropped five pounds this week. I know it's not for everyone, but it's been great for me. Good luck to you.

My understanding is that most people will gain 10-12 lbs once they get to their goal and change the dieting behaviors a bit....seems like you got close to your goal and added some normal things in....but a bit too soon. I'd say just cut the carbs, increase some activity, recommit to weighing yourself daily--to watch for creep-ups, works for me--and counting your calories, again. You can do it.
I'd like to get 10-12...maybe 15 lbs below my ideal weight...so when I gain the 10 lbs that are normal, back, I will be right at my ideal planned weight.

overboard got a reaction from AliveAgain in Confused And Depressed -- I Don't Want To Regret This!
I am so sorry you are having a hard time with the cravings for food. I also was depressed after my surgery for a few weeks. I think I was really mourning food.I was sad I couldn't just quit the hideous diet! I also HATED the shakes. I never have liked sweets either. I can't remember that I did anything about it, but I got through it. This is a very tough phase emotionally. It was for me at least. But, the only thing I have to tell you is it will get better, you will get off the shakes fairly soon, and life gets a lot easier and more enjoyable when you can eat soft foods. Good luck to you! Pretty soon you will be able to try some other food. I didn't have anything but unsweetened passion iced tea from starbucks and those Protein Drinks. The day I no longer had to do the Protein drinks, was a glorious day! I had one again. I do think I had keifer milk. It isn't sweet and was something different. I liked that for a while. If it is too plain you can add some of those Mio drops in the keifer milk, but if you don't like sweets you might not need that. Good luck to you, it will get better.

overboard got a reaction from SweetJessa in 3 day on pre op diet
I am 9 days into the pre-op diet and I have found as long as I have my Protein drinks frequently and don't wait because I am busy, etc. I feel pretty good. I did have headaches and I felt shaky the first few days. Not having real food can put anyone in a very irritable place! I wouldn't worry about that, it is normal. The headaches and the shaky feelings are gone and I am feeling pretty good now. The busier I was the less on focused on the fact I wasn't eating the better I feel. I made myself busy with friends and projects. It helped me to stop thinking about how much I didn't like the pre-op diet and wishing for carbs. Hope that helps! Now it isn't so hard to see/be around food. I am fine not having food.
    Hope that helps!
