ShoeLover reacted to JD7176 in "so How Much Weight Have You Lost?" Rant
I never had issues revealing that I underwent WLS to people I know. I'm almost 3 weeks post-op and am getting out more, resuming my regular life and the one question that's starting to burn me is, "so how much weight have you lost?" with this wide eyed expression. When I say 20 or so, they almost get this disappointed look. Did you think I was going to lose 100lbs in 2.5 weeks?! WLS is a tool not a magic pill. It takes months and years and WORK to pull down those types of numbers.
I had to get that off my chest! Have a happy Saturday!

I really would like to be able to give you a nice, peaceful resolution, but I'm just not that person. I probably would have slapped the absolute mess outta him and then I would have given him the worst cussing of his life. But what will probably be the sweetest revenge is when you get slim, and have other men salivating over you.

I do believe that the doctors in Mexico employ coordinators to assist them in getting US patients, but I don't think they get involved in the methods that the coordinators use. Dr Garcia does not speak English very fluently, he speaks some, but he still can communicate pretty well. The coordinators usually represent more than one doctor.
Also, I had a couple of issues with A Lighter Me, but I did not let that deter me from choosing Dr. Garcia. I am glad that I chose him, I've had absolutely no problems since my surgery, and I spoke with a lot of his previous patients before I made my decision. I had to go thru A Lighter Me in order to be able to use my FSA to pay for the surgery.

I assume this refers to my comments earlier. I did NOT chastise you. What I said is that people need not feel compelled to tell anyone about their surgery. If they choose to, great. If not, great. It is a very personal decision and needs to be made by each individual. People should not be made to feel as though they are failing someone by not talking about their surgeries. In my experience, many of the people who have chosen to be vocal about their surgeries are almost bullies. They constantly tell more private people that they are wrong or are not making the right decision in deciding not to disclose to people that they had surgery. That is not OK. Certainly, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but the very framing of some of these questions is off-putting. People are put in the positon of having to justify why they don't choose to broadcast their surgeries.
I have had various types of medical procedures during my life and at no point have I felt it necessary to tell everyone I know about it. This is no different. I am not going to make up elaborate excuses and I am not going to lie. But I am not going to volunteer any information. And if someone is bold enough to ask such a personal question, I won't feel bad about letting them know how rude and inappropriate I find them to be.

I've noticed that some of the people who get the RNY surgery look a little dried out, skin wise. But I haven't seen that in sleevers. I suppose its because of the Vitamin deficiency in the RNY patients.

This is true. It hurts to find out you're on the receiving end of gossip. I've been there many times and it hurt! But I think those experiences have steeled me, because in this case I really could care less who says what. I told a co-worker and she's a skinny-minny who was in the midst of some weight loss challenge. She very well may have opinions on my decision. So what? I really mean that.
    SO. WHAT.
Caring about being judged is part of what got me to my current size. It's what caused me to stuff my feelings down with food. It caused me to stop even trying to live and instead stand still.
I lost a decade of my life, worrying about what someone else might think of me.
Now that I've come to my senses, I've got a long journey back. Anyone who cannot be supportive or at least be silent, they don't count. If folks talk at my job and I decide I can't take it, I'll leave and go get another job. That's life! And life is about the choices we make. I am happy for me, and because of that I want to share my happiness, that I'm on my way back to loving me. If folks can't or don't want to relate...
    So what?

My reason for not telling people has nothing to do with them being supportive or not. I am private about my personal life and this falls into the personal life folder. I would not be interested if someone told me about their weight loss surgery and do not want to go outside someone else's comfort level or bore them.
Excuse me for saying this. I know many of you have told a lot of people about your upcoming or recent surgery and are excited so many of them are supportive. How do you know what they are saying behind your back? Gossip can be cruel and can affect your standing with "friends" and in the office. I don't mean to say you are wrong. If you need the support and think you can get it, go for it. You certainly know your situation better than I.

I would not go around telling people about any medical procedure I am having done, so this is no different for me. Would most folks be supportive? Probably, but I don't feel a need to go searching for approval in that way. Another way to ask the question is: why are some folks super invested in telling everyone about their surgery?

Exactly what do you mean by "going out of the US is not what others make it seem".....please do not make blanket statements like this, it can be confusing to the newbies on this board.

Ugh, this. I'm sorry, I can't get with people picking on others just because they decided to do something to improve THEIR life. I'm sorry. I can't do the kumbaya, hand-holding thing with someone who is being spiteful to me. Now, I understand going the psychology route if it's a spouse, because you have to get along with them, but someone who is just a so-called friend can kiss my rapidly slimming a$$. Sorry. I'm not trying to offend anyone.
To be clear, I am not talking about a friend who goes on about their life and eats what they want to in front of me, I have no problem with that. I am talking about someone who goes out of their way to make nasty remarks.

I limit my interactions with people who are not supportive....and if that's not possible, when they start talking about food, I start talking about how much better I feel now that I've given up junk, how much weight I've lost so far, how good I'm starting to look, etc. just to annoy them the way they're trying to annoy me.

I served in the Texas National Guard, I barely got in because of my weight, and once I was in, my weight was always an issue, especially since I had a hard time passing the PT tests. While I was in the National Guard, I met my husband, who was a Desert Storm veteran. He has since passed on, and I don't wanna get too sad thinking about it, but I had to respond to this post in his remembrance on this holiday.
