I can RELATE TOTALLY to this topic. Prior to vsg surgery I was a food pit!!!!
After surgery food is not important in my daily scheme of things. I try to eat enough to acquire enough Protein as instructed. However, most days I just cannot make myself eat very much at all. I cannot believe the change/difference in my outlook on eating!!!!!!!

I was just having these same thoughts today. To be honest, I have a little frustration and sadness about it. I used to really love that full feeling in my belly after a subway turkey sub or a big bowl of homemade salad with lots of ranch dressing. Now I just stare at my food and feel like I could take it or leave it. I get full so fast that I don't feel any satisfaction from what I am eating. While I enjoy the weight loss, I guess I am mourning the way it used to be a little bit. This new normal really takes some getting used to.

Today I lay to rest one of my favorite supporters. Cheesecake, thank you for all the good times we had. Cheesecake made me feel better in hard times, and was always there to reward me for a job well done. Cheesecake was always there for every emotion willing and ready to either comfort me or Celebrate with me. Cheesecake was always at its best smothered in strawberries. While cheesecake was there for me in so many times of struggle, it was not without faults. Cheesecake was full of sugar and calories and so many times lead me into temptation. Cheesecake will be greatly missed but it is in a better place now, in the refrigerator of someone with a high metabolism and self control. Thank you cheesecake for everything. I will now turn to my husband for support when I am at my lowest and reward myself with a pedicure instead.
That concludes the food funeral for my great friend cheesecake

I too had to hold a funeral for my best friend. Pepsi. We spent every day together. Some times all day. He was seldom further than an arms length away. I wanted to be with him from almost the first moment I woke up each day to the minute I went to bed. I knew he would be there, icy cold, any time I was feeling down or stressed.
I still miss him quite a bit.

My surgeon is asking me to give up carbonation forever, as it can (possibly) over time, gradually contribute to stretching the stomach. If that is even a REMOTE possibility, I am never, never, NEVER going to touch it!!!! Why would I go through such a life altering event just to gratify my old desires? That's what got me in this mess in the first place! I understand the whole "one bite" thing with food....maybe....but if something risks stretching the stomach? I'm dropping it like a hot rock!!!

There is no way i am going to be able to go through my life and not eat cookies lol. We just have a different relationship now. Instead of going steady we date casually :boxing_smiley:

Wish I had good news ladies. I am freezing too. Here I sit in "sunny" Southern California with a high of 70 today. What did I wear? Pants with a high neck sweater to work, with a blazer on top. If I was in the sun, I was fine.
Did anyone else catch the clause of preop paperwork in fine print of my sleeve surgery that a move to Hawaii or the Caribbean was needed? HA HA
Say "fleece" with me. It will be your newest friend and worse fashion offender. Oh well, I still love my sleeve.

Well, I have a little Girl Scout in the family so, not only did I have to buy a bunch, but I took her out to sell and help others in the sinful delight. To top it all off, my wife volunteered to do the cookie pick-up and distribution to the scouts. In less than two weeks, I am going to have HUNDREDS of those boxes in my house. (My daughter sold like 130 boxes alone) I'm not even going to try to kid myself ... of course I'm going to be all over those. I better up my exercise now.
Hey, I didn't get this sleeve so I couldn't sin anymore! (But I also didn't get it so I could sin ... )

I have not-but more because I am a Pepsi addict than anything else!! My doctor takes a hard line on soda-but I know some people handle it OK. Personally, as much as I crave it-I don't dare take even a sip. Every one I know that has regained weight attributes it to soda. I know that I can't handle just one sip.
I see no redeeming value to soda. In addition to just losing weight-I'm here to learn healthier eating habits and for me that can't include soda.
My doctor says that the carbonation can contribute to stretching your sleeve. Others in this forum say that is not possible. Not willing to take that risk. It was hard enough to give it up pre-op.

I can only speak for myself and what ive read from others but its a little info. They asked me about my support system, family, they make you fill out a questionare about depression, sucicide, your moods. Do you think you will be able to handle it after surgery, how are your relationships. Do you have an eating disorder. Just basic questions about your life. He did ask me if i was sure i was ready and if i would be able to handle the restrictions after. He told me in the 10 years he had been doing evals only 2 had not been approved. One was completely crazy and one had an eating disorder. After he treated the disorder they went on to have the surgery a year later.
Good luck, dont stress about this part too much! It will be done and over with in an hour!

Thank you so much for responding. I tried to search for other topics in the Forum that covered this, but my search yielded no results! One thing I worry about is like, Do I have an "eating disorder"? I'm 130 lbs overweight! I am an overeater, you know? It's like, I KNOW that "overeating" is not in the DSM-IV, but it might be in the future. So...anyway, thank you so much for responding. It's always nice to know you're not alone

Yeah....and just because your surgeon said it doesn't make him absolutely correct either. If you polled 100 VSG surgeons I would make a bet that 99 of them would say no drinking after eating. It's a mixture of common sense, physics, and anatomy.

Amen, sister! "Cheating" means breaking the rules. Why have the surgery if you don't intend to do what you are supposed to do? Sheer silliness. And, yes, denial.

I do like your post, but would like to add that many of us got to where we were pre-surgery by living in denial, and thinking that a little of this or that doesn't really matter. And, many of us have been encouraged to live in denial by loved ones who tell us that we can have "just a little bit", or "you're not fat".
And, I see people posting on the internet who get upset if someone has the gall to disagree with something they've done. Like they only want to read "That's okay", "You'll be fine." Anyone who replies differently is considered unsupportive.
We just had the majority of a major organ cut off, and unfortunately, we still need to use it while it recovers. If the doctor says to eat a certain type of food, we should be doing just that. To do anything else is to be out of control just like how we got this way in the first place.
So, I do think we can be supportive, yet blunt. Sometimes blunt is needed. I, for one, am not offended by blunt. Bring on the blunt!

I haven't cried yet, but definitely a little frustrating. I am definitely battling cravings and head hunger. The only good news is that I have no physical hunger. That is the only reason I am able to stay on track. I think if my stomach growled like it used to I would be a goner!

Normal eating is making healthier choices overall. Keeping in mind what your NUT or Surgeon has told you, but for the most part realizing that high Protein choices will be what fills you up quickest and keep you full longest. Moderating that with other healthy choices like fruits and vegetables. And, if you are far enough out from surgery and IF you think you can control yourself with something off program whether it's sweets or something that doesn't fall into the Protein, veggies or fruits, then in moderation and understanding that too much of that will affect the progress of weight loss.
It's a delicate balance, something that each of us has to figure out for ourselves since we are all different. Furthermore, men tend to lose weight more quickly than woman when following this regimen, plus if the men have more physically demanding jobs, that is even more helpful for them.

fluffylibra30 reacted to circa in Fee For Dietician And Psych. Consults?
You would be amazed at how many people don't know about the surgery and how absolutely necessary a psych consult can be. My aunt was turned down for the surgery because of her psych consult. She could not grasp the reality that she wouldn't be able to chow down on chinese food after the surgery. Yes, there are those people out there. Just like with the NUT. I have been through several programs and in group nutrition meetings, people keep asking "yes, but when can I have pizza/cheesecake/ice cream/cake/etc after surgery?" It amazes me at how little people actually know about nutrition. They don't know how to read food labels, they don't know how to measure a portion or even add up calories. I was beating my head against the table halfway through these meetings. While we may be a large amount of educated people on this subject (some of us could probably perform the surgery, given a scalpel! lol) there are twice as many out there that have ZERO clue what they're getting into.
