missmeow got a reaction from CA712 in Would You Have Weight Loss Surgery Again?
WLS is done to prevent disease and health issues later on but can also cause health issues in the here and now such as leaks, infection, malnutrition, etc.
I knew this going in. I didn't do it for longevity because the fact is that I'm not going to die a fat person this year but WLS sure could have done me in.
WLS may save some people's lives in the short term but for otherwise healthy people like myself, its a risk. A big one. I think surgeons should be open about it but that isnt going to happen in a for profit health care system.
Ask me in a year if I regret it. I'm still far too early out to tell. I did have a great surgeon who was open and no complaint s there. Everything has gone well but I'm too early out and haven't hit roadblocks or frustration. Maybe I won't, but its too early for me.

I think obesity is more complicated and physiological than simple food addition. The mere fact that ghrelin removal has such a dramatic impact on hunger drive only emphasizes this. If you're truly a food addict thats good you can identity it and work through it. But that doesn't mean one person's circumstances apply to all or that if someone says they're not an addict that they're in denial. Bad habits/socialization and disordered eating are factors as well.
    Just my thoughts

missmeow got a reaction from Puja in Vet's Forum
Just my two cents as a noob...
I think of a veteran as someone who is entering maintenance, or who is 9 months or more out and working on losing when the restriction eases up. The logic of a few months past that 6 month point works for me in that even people who have longer to go are likely to still be facing some ofthe same physical issues that thosr in maintenance are.
I would imagine most veteran issues to revolve around transitioning to more "normal" eating patterns and how to maintain the loss without being completely neurotic. The last thing a vet needs is a noob telling them Protein first and no soda.
I dont think post count should be a factor at all.
One day ill get to graduate to the vet forum. I think its a grest idea.

That's one of my surgeons, Dr. Q. They're great. I didnt consider the spider because it takes longer and I was more worried about nausea and such from being under longer. My scars are healing to the point they won't be noticeable so I dont regret opting for the normal route.
But I think this is a great option if you scar badly. Just make sure you go to a surgeon that has done this technique before.

My feeling about coworkers is that they are just that--coworkers. Unless you're going to church with them, having them over for dinner, or going on vacation with you, they are not your friends, so if you want to keep it your own business don't tell them anything. People will be supportive until they feel threatened, especially in the work unit.
As far as it being the easy way out, why the hell not? The "hard way" hasn't worked, hasn't gotten you anywhere, so why keep doing it. I don't drive my car with square tires either.

You can take it negatively and dwell on it or turn it positive and move on.

I think the band is really only a good solution for low BMI people (30-35) who can use it more as a speed bump for their eating and develop better habits. The weight loss from it is about 40% EWL in some studies which would bring people in that range into a healthy body weight.
At higher weights, my opinion is that there are physiological changes to the body and the hunger/satiation feedback loupe that cause or contribute to obesity that the band cannot address and that is why the "failure" rate is so much higher in high BMI folks (> 35).

Yesh, a 25% removal rate is pretty bad and the literature would have a 40% EWL as a failure as well. I don't think it is a good option for us big people. If they don't take it off the market, I wouldn't be surprised if they make official for only low BMIs. Most surgeons are steering people away from it.
I totally agree with you. I was mostly trying to add to your post.
