    I Am Enough!

    August Surgery Buddies!

I finally got my date! August 18th! It took three months to jump through all the hoops, but finally I got the call with the date I changed from the sleeve to the bypass due to a few minor complications with acid. I feel strong about my decision and I'm super excited to move forward.

    Backing out

Hey y’all. I scheduled to have my surgery Wednesday. I’ve done great on my 10 day pre op diet. But it seems the closer I get to THE DAY, the more I’m trying to talk myself out of going through with it. What if I’m making a mistake and I don’t recover well? What if I can never enjoy food with my husband again? What if I’m wasting money that could be spent else where? Did anyone else experience this before their procedure?

    Backing out

I had doubts like everyone. One of the best things that happened to me was my surgery was cancelled 2 days prior due to me getting Covid. The disappointment I felt over that and, especially, the anger I felt every time I was still fat after the surgery date, instead of losing weight, made me certain this was what I wanted to do. No one can tell you what to do, but be honest with yourself, don't just give in to fear. I've seen very few people who regret the surgery and tons and tons who wish they'd done it sooner.

Isn't it an amazing feeling to see that huge milestone. You have smashed it in such a short time too. What can you do now that you struggled with 100lbs ago ?

    Liver Enzymes Post Op DS

I had RNY, but my liver enzymes were elevated the first year or so. My PCP said thought it was probably fatty liver, but then I read online (some reliable medical site) that elevated liver enzymes were not uncommon after WLS because the rapid weight loss can be really hard on livers. I had them re-tested later, and they were normal - so I think that's what was going on. Not sure why this possibility didn't occur to my PCP, but maybe she doesn't see many bariatric patients. I'm not saying this the cause of yours, but I think it was in my case. In any case, mine are normal now. EDITED to add I just re-read your post and you said your liver was enlarged. So your enzyme levels may be due to something else. I don't know if my liver was enlarged since that was never checked - but my enzyme levels were definitely high.

    Cold sores

Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. More than likely your body and immune system is stressed from surgery and weightloss and is having a hard time keeping the virus suppressed. A good part of our immune system is located in our GI tract which was just violently disrupted, to say the least. Good nutrition will help get you back on track. You may try taking lysine for awhile....500mg/day. It can help slow the replication of the herpes virus. There are also OTC topicals that won't necessarily get rid of them, but will help with the discomfort until they are gone.
