Hey everyone!

Seeing the success of my last blog, I thought I would post another to help get answers I'm failing to find online. The company I'm having my procedure with had a liasion leave and it's been hard to get emails answered and phone calls returned, which is a bit scary since I'm doing this alone. I would appreciate your help and expertise on the following questions. Thanks in advance!!

1. Since my BMI is over 50, I plan to complete a 14-day liquid diet before my procedure on the 19th of July. I have a basic understanding of what I'm allowed to have based on the packet received; however, there is one thing I am confused about-- where do protein drinks come in??? Am I supposed to drink these pre-op, post-op, or both?? Suggestions on brands and flavors would be greatly appreciated as well :)

2. I know I have to follow a post-op diet starting with clear liquids, then moving to puree and eventually regular food... but I have yet to hear of any "new" limits, specifically carbs. I am particularly interested now since I have free time and want to get all the facts before going in. I think my biggest fear is not knowing a limit with carbs and stretching out my sleeve. Is there a limit on how many carbs sleeved patients are allowed per day post-op??

3. Last but not least, do you recommend any books or online websites in addition to verticalsleevetalk.com that will help answer questions someone like myself may have both before and after the procedure? Has anyone read "The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients" by Colleen Cook?? A forum and group mentioned the book and it seemed legit. Will probably order tonight.

Have a wonderful week!

All doctors have different diets and times. The most important thing is to get your protein in and fluids. You will not have room for carbs. You will not want them. Protein drinks will become your friend. My doctor want 4 drinks a day I could only get in 2-3. Seek out different brands and flavors. Watch the surgar and carb, People working out can have that not you. Sugar will make you sick after surgery. I did me and still does 3 month out. i just read alot on this page and learned alot. Seek out a support group or other tha have had the surgery. Good luck

www.obesityhelp.com is a good website. There is a lot of information there.

As far as protein drinks go, you need to check out the food forum under protein drinks. There are places you can order samples. It's best to do samples until you settle on something you like. Most people end up liking something after surgery, than they liked before surgery so it's best not to stock up on a lot of anything.

It depends on your BMI on whether or not you will have to drink them pre-op or for how long. You will definitely need them after surgery.

If you have a costco, the Premier protein drinks seem to be something everyone agrees on and is extremely popular.

I am pre-op and have already incorporated protein drinks into my day. I have one for breakfast (sometimes made into a smoothie with frozen fruit), and sometimes I'll have one in the afternoon when I start to feel tired. The brand I have tried and liked the best, so far, is Isopure... they have no carb vanilla and low carb chocolate that are staples in my house. I do understand my taste may change post surgery... but they are definitely needed for the two-week liquid diet leading to surgery. I am planning to join Sam's or Costco for some of the offerings they have on protein.

All the best to you on your journey! I am a Melissa, too. ;)

    • I’ve used my Xbox for exercise games too and it can be pretty motivating, especially on days when I don’t want to leave the house. Kinect games really do make you move, and after a session with kickboxing or dancing, I always feel like I’ve actually gotten a solid workout. The controller-free setup feels way more natural for workouts than anything I tried on the Wii. Zumba is fun but definitely takes a little time to get the moves right. Lately, when I’m not working out, I spend time trading CS2 skins and finding new guides on this link. There’s a lot of interesting tips if you’re into games outside of fitness too.
    • I'm literally almost crying reading this. Mostly because I'mon this pre-op diet and these last two days have been difficult... but also because I needed this! Thank you! Congrats! And a BIG congrats on quitting smoking a second time! It was hard enough to do it once... So - when I say BIG congrats... I mean BIIIIIG congrats! ❤️
    • Congratulations! What a great journey! Thank you so much for sharing. You are inspiring!
