Question on Lap Band Foods

My friend invited me to her birthday which consists of a Sushi bar and drinking that hot tea they serve. I realized after she asked me...I don't think I will ever eat sushi again will I? We can't have rice can we?

I know I'm way to soon to even eat but her party is in a month.

Can or has anyone had a sushi roll once banded or is it a forbidden fruit?

I know pasta is out forever and soda but is rice also?

everyone, including my dietician/nutritionist has "warned" me not to eat rice!!! so i've been too much of a scaredy cat to even try it!! :tt2: I dont like sushi, so i've never even thought of it. .. but doesnt it have some kind of seaweed wrapping, which i might be scared would block my opening in the band??.. :) even if this kind of food is ok in the future, it might just be too early right now for you to eat it?? i would say, call your doctor's office and ask the nurse/dietician/whoever handles inquiries in his/her office....sorry i'm not much more help.:tt2:

Yeah...that visual just stuck in my brain so if I go maybe I will just have the soup and some steamed veggies.

Forever is not a word in my I use very often in vocabulary...here are a few things I do not and will not do

soda or any other carbonated beverage

straws

chew gum

caffeine (actually allergic to it)

tortilla chips (band doesn't like them)

ice cream (tried it once and caused me to slim)

My list is pretty short..I eat just about everything just very small portions. I am not a fan of sushi so I can't personally say I eat it but we are suppose to eat cooked food. I do eat very small amounts of rice as well as pasta..like 2 spoonfuls with the meal it is being served with. Rice expands once it is in your stoma so if you eat one spoon you really get 1 1/2 in your stoma afterwards which could be really uncomfortable.

I have rice, pasta and bread. I was avoiding it and my nutritionist said we need some carbs for our brain function. Ask your doctor office but nothing is off limits really. The soda is off because of carbonation causes pain/discomfort. I have heard of some that still drink it. Everyone is different. I had a sandwich for lunch. Went down no problem. I had bread with dinner(same skinny sliced bread as lunch) and it got stuck. It's a crap shoot.

I gave up bread after my 2nd fill...I wont put it on my never list because if I am really craving it I will take a bite of it but it really fills me up and then I can't eat enough protein. I need protein to keep me going. No matter what I eat I still follow that golden rule..protein first..or at least 75% of my meal will be eaten of protein before I start eating veggies or starch/carbs.

I eat rice, pasta and bread it can definitely be a challenge and it fills me up quicker. But I do eat it being an O blood type I NEED it, carbs and red meat.. need need need it... but yeah I just listen to my band if it says "no bread today" I don't eat bread.. if it says ok.. I go for it. I've found usually if it's toasted it's not an issue. Bagels, english muffins, waffles, etc.. like this morning I had eggs benedict with no issue. But then tonight I had a wheat tortilla and that was a no go. Listen to your band and body and you'll be fine.

They say not to drink through a straw or chew gum, I do both and don't really notice any difference. They say we suck in too much air drinking through a straw or chewing gum, I don't know how most people drink/chew but that's not really a problem for me.

Do what feels right to you!

CHOICES, CHOICES, CHOICES! I have been at this over one year now. Thank you LB (little Body) you are my BEST FRIEND. I drink my iced coffee with a straw and I have since day 1 NO PROBLEMS, Gum gives me gas always has. I can eat whatever I want and I do in small amounts. Yes, it is about CHOICES! I would not eat a flour tortilla before banding or much bread I do like a bite or two of the crust of anything but it is not that often. Pasta was my problem before banding. I can eat about two bites now. I choose to eat REAL Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants, with Proteins FIRST and NO liquids with meals it works for me. I am NOT on a DIE-T!! I am LIVING my life with a 109 pound loss in one year two weeks. I did give up soda and I even had withdraw from it even the Fresca I used to drink. Must be something fake in it. I have had sushi only two pieces is all I can eat. I must say it would not be my first CHOICE. Go for the protein first. This has been a great blog Thank you. Best wishes imaluckydog

Thank you so much for the advice. It seems like pretty much if we listen to our bodies we can live with choices and be ok. A friend of mine got banded a week ago and is eating Wendy's chili because she is starving and found it worked well for her and she swears its only 220 calories and 18 protien. I'm too scared to try it but she is fine. It's amazing how different we all are with this band.

I know this is a lifestyle change and I plan to use this band to help me recover from my old habbits. :)

So my girlfriend and i are both banded we always start with an order of sashmi we love salmon. then we ordered one roll and pick at a little and some times take the top layer off and eat the middle.. my gf can eat the rice no problem however i cant .. for a special occasion i will eat a roll but to be on the lap band plan as they say we should stay away from white rice. my doctors says if i eat pasta or rice just make sure its whole wheat. But for me i love sushi i crave all the time so i talked to my resturant and the said they will give me a plate of just the filling since hard for me so talk to them they make work with you.. Good luck on your journey it will be awesome.

I am a sushi lover. I get tuna hand rolls and eat the tuna or sashimi and just CHEW IT WELL.

I tried the rice in a roll last week. Not a good thing. Will not repeat that one.

It seems like most of us adapt to what we can tolerate and what fits into our lifestyles and digestive systems. The best thing I can tell you is go slow with it, but mostly enjoy yourself at the party!
