Pre Op Diet.............

Is there a certain amount of weight you have to lose before the surgeon will perform the surgery. I have heard some people say that they neede to lose ten pounds but only lose 7 and then the date gets pushed back. Anyone has any comments on this?

My surgeon puts you on a protein shake/liquid diet for 2 weeks pre-op. He doesn't care how much you lose, as long as you lose. His nurse said he's had people who lost 2 pounds and people who lost 30....but yeah, I've heard tothers say they had to lose x number of pounds of their surgery would be cancelled so I suppose it varies from doc to doc.

When I had to go on my pre-op liquid diet my Dr. told me that I had to "stick to it" because if I didn't then my liver wouldn't shrink and it would be harder for him to perform the surgery, if at all. So I definitely made sure that I stuck to it, after all I'd been thru with the 6 mo. diet and stuff, I wanted to make sure that he would be able to do the surgery. I think all in all lost like 9 lbs on the pre-op diet.

I am on the 2-week pre-op in order to shrink the liver. My dr. doesn't require a certain amount lost before surgery but states it is more dangerous if the liver is too heavy. Some at the support group share that they lost less than 10 and he implied they did not follow their pre-op diet. Me, I don't need additional risk factors as I go into anesthetic so I am painfully sticking to it!
