A week ago today I was banded. I'm so discouraged and have no idea why. I want so much to be losing weight faster. I've only lost 6 lbs this week. ONLY. See what I mean? I'm crazy. 6 lbs is great! Why can't I feel like it's great? I feel like I'm not doing enought. I tried a gentle walk on the treadmill today but I got through 8 min and my port site hurt so I stopped. I feel like I'm eating too much even though I'm keeping it under 1000 cal and am always hungry.

Anyone have any advice for me?

First off, step back and take a deep deep breath and let it out. You are just out of surgery girl. You need to start thinking "healing" not losing. You need to concentrate on getting your body back up to where it was before surgery and let all the other just sluff off. This is about you and you doing this long term. Don't worry about the weight, it will come off. You have to help yourself right now, and I know I probably did the same amount of worrying about the weight at that stage, but I promise, if you worry about you getting healed, the time will come and you will start to feel normal again. Cheer up, your on your way girl!!

You are doing great. Now is the time to take care of yourself and heal. Don't push it. If you are on liquids try creamy Soup. The milk has Protein and for some reason it really helped me during that stage. 6 lbs is wonderful. Remember life as a bandster is a journey not a destination. I've been banded 2 years and it is definitely a life style with a band. Good luck to you! YOu are doing great.

I'm still new to this, I was just banded on 6/27/08. I will say though that the first week was very depressing for me. I got to telling myself about all the things I couldn't eat, all the things that needed to be done around the house that I couldn't do because I was sore, etc. I made myself depressed. Just rest as much as you can, don't over do it, because believe me it will cause you pain, and don't stress about losing weight because you WILL lose weight with this. Others will notice before you do. So take care of yourself.

Six pounds is fantastic! I know it's hard to be optimistic when you are frustrated, but I agree with everyone else that you should focus on your body healing right now. It's kinda graphic, but there's a great vid on YouTube that shows the actual surgery. If you an stomach it (haha), you might be more patient with yourself. After you see what your poor abdomen has been through, you'll actually want to give it a rest.

Hang in there sweetie....

One week after I had my surgery, I stepped on the scale and I had gained 4 lbs! I was so upset that I started to cry and even questioned if the doctor had really done the surgery. He told me that it was because of the swelling and the gas. Anyway, I am now 4 weeks post-op and have lost 24 lbs. Don't get discouraged, the weight will come off, I promise!

Good luck to you!

You and I are band buddies it seems, I was banded a week ago too. I am not rushing it. I am walking, but not as far as before my surgery and only in the last two days. I came home pretty tired. This month is for recuperation from surgery and Im taking it that way.

I finally dropped 2 more lbs. last night, so Im down 4 lbs to your 6 lbs, so you are ahead of me there too.

Advice to you---get rid of your scale if you have one at home. Personally, I get discouraged even if I weigh in as much as once a week. For me, it needs to be more like once or twice a month---because when I see a two pound loss--which I know is a great loss for a week--I feel discouraged and depressed. I have not weighed myself since my posst-op appt---1 week after the surgery--I was sooo discouraged since I weighed the same as i did on the day of my surgery. So I know I have lost more since then, but I will find out at my first fill on t he 23rd.

Good luck ith everything

AMY

Don't get down on yourself! 6 pounds is awesome in one week. You can do this! Just take it slowly with the walking. Try doing multiple short intervals of walking throughout the day (this is what I am doing due to port pain).

I do have a question for you though.... what are you eating that amounts to 1,000 cal a day?

I'm on Clear Liquids (for another week) and probably consuming a max of 400 calories a day (if that). Most of my intake is Water right now.

I usually do a soy milk/protein powder shake in the morning, and EAS shake for lunch and some sort of Soup for dinner. I also drink 2 k20 Protein waters and 2 sugar free popsicles. I don't usually hit 1000 but it's not because I can't.

I wasn't put on clear liquids accept for the day after surgery.

Well I see you got a lot of encouragement and answers already but I will put in my 2 cents worth. Reason's to feel better: You already had the surgery. I am still waiting - at least two more months. Your post gave me a guideline for how I may feel and I learned from that. I am sure I will be depressed and weepy because that is how I tend to get. I will remember it is normal. Other answers to your post have helped me to. So by sharing you are helping others. Good luck. Listen to your body instead of looking at a scale.< /p>

I personally wouldnt stay at 400 calories a day for very long or your metabolism will drop and you will need to eat less to lose weight after a while.

My stomach area where the port is, is also hurting and sore. I dont know exactly what is hurting me over there. Im tired of it too.

(I too was banded July 9th, so Im right there with you in recovery). I personally think 6 lbs down is great in 9 days.

This should cheer you up.

You say you've lost 6 pounds and it's only been a week since banded.

I didn't lose my first pound...not even an ounce until 10 weeks after surgery.

Feel better?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
