Wii Fit

I hate going to the gym. To be honest, I hate exercising! But it is something I have to do. I'm not the most coordinated so I do a lot of stumbling around in most of the classes. I'm much more comfortable at home but I don't have a home gym.

Anyway, I was flipping through the sales ads and saw an advertisement for the Wii Fit that will be released next week. I actually got excited about it and asked my husband to order me one for Mother's Day. It has aerobics, yoga, strength training and balance activities.

The only bad thing is that it is just like the console... in demand and hard to get. I'm hoping my husband pre-ordered it before they went out of stock.

I am definitely going to do a little browsing around on ebay before I look too hard locally. From what I understand, they sell out almost as soon as Walmart or anywhere else gets them in anyway, so if I find one priced that reasonably on ebay, I will probably go ahead and purchase it too.

I just got off of my Wii fit and it was fun. I did 30 minutes of exercise and did fairly well---but I have a fitness age of 61-I am 46!!!!!!

I picked it up at my local Walmart at about 4 pm and they still had at least one left. I preordered one from Amazon and they estimate delivery on 5/27-I couldn't wait.

It is interesting and challenging-there is one that is like a dance routine that I find impossible, i did better with yoga since I do it anyway.

I would be happy to answer questions you may have!

Hey!

I got my Wii fit yesterday at midnight and have been using it. I really think its a lot of fun, but it doesn't have nearly the sustained calorie burn of the gym or even walking...

I posted about it in my blog with my bodybugg calorie/min burn chart. You can take a look!

I defnitely recommend for fun but not for replacing the gym!

wooo hooo! i'm getting one tonight (DH's boss bought 2 and sold one to us at cost)..

we looked on the website and it said something about running... it showed the Mii's running, but the player wasnt on the board or anything... anyone know how that works??

LJM,

As far as I know for the running part you put your controllers in your pockets and run. The board is not involved. You can run around your house as long as you are still in range of your wii. Mine should be here today or tomorrow. I'm so excited!!

I would love a Wii-Fit. It weighs you, tracks BMI and work out progress. Everything I read shows it's pretty effective at making exercise more fun and interactive. Anything that changes up a routine before it gets boring works for me. Variety in my daily work outs is becoming more important the longer I am post op. I have mostly focussed on cardio with an exercise bike and it's becoming a bit boring. Now I am looking for ways to spice up my work outs. I purchased a kettle bell (google it) and a Hoist V3 home gym to start building muscle. Now I just need to finish my home gym/basement and setup all my equipment down there!

Mick,

Since you mentioned a Kettle ball, I would also recommend you looking into a Bosu ball. I love it and its a great workout!! I find it a lot of fun and its very versatile!

we love our wii,we have wii fit[got on sale]its great,i dont rely on for my full workout,i do it as extra[fun and extra weight loss at the same time]there are so meany choices,i also think its great for kids not just sitting there like xbox and sony, they get involved with the wii and gets them moveing[id rather that, not that my kids have a weight problem, they have there dads lanky height ect....]if you get a wii fit im sure you will really enjoy it,i paid $120,but if you think about it,some games on there own cost $100,so i think its good value for the game and platform.from one happy wii player 2 another.

I got my Wii fit on tuesday and it is great, alot of fun and I think it will really motivate my kids as well. The price of the Wii fit is $89 and nintendo regulates the price so you can not get if for less, unless you buy it from a private party secondhand. If you paid $120 for the game then the store jacked up the price. It tracks your usage on a calander and you earn Wii money for the time you work out, which in turn unlocks new games and activities for you to participate in.

Have fun,

Ari

Hi-

There is a running exercise in the aerobics category. Tou start with a short run, expected to keep up with the mii in front of you. Once you earn enough points you get to access a distance run-don't know what is besides that. You don't run on the balance board but with a wii remote in your hand or in your pocket. There is also a racing game where you can race a person if you have a second controller.

hi ari, thata great you got your wii fit for that price,im in w.a so got mine from country target,i think for us over hear if we went thru ninendo itself we would have to fork out shipping cost ontop, wich may end up costing the same[not sure]we used to have the nintendo 64,that had warranty problems and it had tacken ages thru shipping and service! just a thought anyway.but if you can get it for less then fantastic

I don't know if this affects all Wii's but you might want to take its fitness readouts with a pinch of salt:

Nintendo Apologizes for Wii Fit Calling Little Girl 'Fat'

A 10-year-old girl was distraught after being labeled "Fat" by Wii Fit. Nintendo has apologized and admitted that the game is not very accurate for measuring children.

Posted by James Brightman on Friday, May 16, 2008

An innocent Nintendo game about balance and fitness is probably the last product that would ever come to mind when you think about video game controversy, but Nintendo's popular Wii Fit (which went on sale in Europe in late April and is launching in the U.S. on May 19) has prompted some experts to question Nintendo's methods for measuring body weight and fitness.

A report in the U.K. paper Daily Mail highlighted an incident in which a 10-year-old girl was told by the Wii Fit software that she's "fat." The girl was very upset to be told that and the parents were none too pleased.

"She is a perfectly healthy, 4ft 9in tall 10-year-old who swims, dances and weighs only six stone," said the father. "She is solidly built but not fat. She was devastated to be called fat and we had to work hard to convince her she isn't. I know it is just a game but we already have to worry about young girls starving themselves to look like magazine models and now we have a game that tells them they're fat. This to me is very worrying."

It's apparently worrying to Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum as well. In Wii Fit after a player enters his/her height, the software uses BMI to measure body fat based on an adult's height and weight. Fry, however, thinks the measurement is misleading and he'd like to see children banned from playing the game.

"I'm absolutely aghast that children are being told they are fat," he said. "BMI is far from perfect but with children it simply should not be used. A child's BMI can change every month and it is perfectly possible for a child to be stocky, yet still very fit. I would be very concerned if children were using this game and I believe it should carry a warning for parents."

For its part, Nintendo acknowledged that it's not the most accurate tool for children to measure body fat and the company apologized. "Nintendo would like to apologize to any customers offended by the in-game terminology used to classify a player's current BMI status, as part of the BMI measurement system integrated into Wii Fit," a company rep said. "Wii Fit is still capable of measuring the BMI for people aged between two and 20 but the resulting figures may not be entirely accurate for younger age groups due to varying levels of development."

A person who is 4'9" and weighs only 6 stone (84lb or 38kg) has a BMI of only 18.2!! That is classed as UNDERweight, not fat!! How the hell did this thing come up with that as a comment if those are truly her measurements? Poor kid :cursing:

I got my Wii Fit this last week and it definately is fun. I would not consider it a work out by any means but it is fun. I had to laugh when my wii mii got fat after I put my stats in. It used to be a cute skinny little thing - not so much anymore. Its kinda funny. I have found that is making yoga easier to do because of the breathing circle and I did like the running. I think it is worth the money.
