7.5 weeks post gastric bypass

Hello everyone,

would really appreciate your advice on this; I got gastric bypass on the 19th pf sep and till today I only lost 8.5kg and for the past 11 days almost nothing though i am very strict with the diet and workout really hard but still..

I am so disappointed overall, feeling stuck and my weight loss is not what i expected after such major change nor what I was hoping for.

Will I ever lose more weight or I just wasted my time again?

what where you expecting to lose, out of curiosity?

(cuz 8.5kg in 5 weeks is pretty good, honestly.)

What was communicated to me during the process is to expect 10-20% of weight loss in the 1st two months; every person who did it with me around the same time already lost 15-20kg..

That’s why i feel that something is wrong with me and I am behind on the weight loss.

I'd lost 11 kg in that time, which was no where near 10-20% of my starting weight.

people lose at all different rates for all different reasons. The first few months I felt I was behind the rest of the pack (and one very insensitive resident told me I was), but I ended up losing ALL of my excess weight (I've gained back about 20 lbs since i hit bottom, which is pretty common). I ended up being one of their "model" patients and for three years I helped lead the pre-op groups at the clinic.

there are so many factors that can affect your rate of loss - age, gender, % of muscle you have, metabolic rate, genetics, starting BMI, whether or not you lost a fair amount of weight before surgery, activity level, etc. The only two things you really have any control over are your diet and activity level. If you do well with those, you WILL lose the weight, whether fast or slow. I was definiteily slow - but steady - and turned out way more successful than I'd hoped to.

so you are doing fine. Try not to compare yourself to others because you don't know what factor(s) are in play for them that might be affecting their rate of loss.

There are no real rules around how much weight you will lose, around how long it will take to lose your weight or how much of your weight you will lose. What you will get is averages/generalisations and with them there are always people who will be below or above that range and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. Comparing yourself to others only messes with your head. Remember you are losing weight and that is amazing.

As for not losing anything in the last 11 days I’d say you are experiencing your first stall. Commonly known as the three week stall though it can happen before that time or after. It happens to almost every single person. It likely won’t be the first stall you experience. They trend to last anywhere from one to three weeks. They can be very frustrating and you can start to think you’re failing. You’re not. Think of your stall as your body going what the hell are you doing to me & then shutting down until it reassesses your new needs in response to your weight loss so far. Stick to your plan. The stall will break when your body is ready to move forward again. And when it does you usually notice a sudden drop in your weight.

You’re doing great.

everyone and their mother ALWAYS say DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS, and yet it is in our nature to do so, unfortunately.

with that said, an 8.5kg loss in 5 weeks is really good. like, i mean, have you ever lost 8.5kg in 5 weeks before? and if you did, have you ever KEPT IT OFF?

you are doing great. you WILL lose the weight if you keep on keeping on.

TRY not to worry about the speed of it all, and focus on the fact that you are on a downward trend. and eventually, IF you keep on keeping on, you will get to where you where you need to be.

so many folks on here stress about the speed of things. i promise you, if you stay the course, you will get there. may as well make the path there enjoyable by just giving yourself grace and time. some get there in 6 months, others get there in 2 years. either way, GETTING THERE is the goal, no matter how long it takes.

good luck! ❤️

Just be patient, it will all be worth it. Your body is still adjusting to the new diet, probably going into 'starvation mode' which will slow down your weight loss. Once your body figures out, you're not starving you will lose some more weight. It's a long slow process but once you lose your first 23kg you'll start getting excited about your weigh in days.
