Has anyone been prescribed Topamax (Topiramate)?

I was just wondering if anyone has been on or is currently taking the medication? I was on Zoloft for almost 1.5 years, and I am almost 2.5 years out from Bypass surgery. In that time, I have gained almost 40lbs since my

lowest weight. I was taken off the Zoloft because of my concern of the weight gain and how fast it had been making the scale go up in the last few months. I have been on Wellbutrin the entire time and have had no

issues. While on Zoloft I felt hungry all the time, I constantly wanted to eat, and my libido went to crap. I had an appointment with my provider and the took me off the Zoloft like I mentioned and increased my

Wellbutrin. I was told to follow up within the month as see if that has helped any. I was also told depending on how things go, my provider may put me on a low dose of Topamax. So, I was just wanting to hear the good,

bad etc. about your experience on it.

With all the advancements in weight management meds that have occurred in the last few years, Topiramate would be very low on my list of things to try (for weight loss). Is there a reason your provider prefers this over GLP-1s?

Hi I’m new to this site. I saw your question and decided to make this my first post since I’ve took Topiramate.

Years ago I was prescribed it off label for migraines. The sides effects were extreme sleepiness, I got angry easily and my memory went out the window. There used to be boards about Topiramate asking for its banning. It was called stupidmate.

Ask your doctor about the sides effects and also google it. Maybe you can find the old forums on it. However it did cause weight loss. Unfortunately the price was too high. I couldn’t even work because of foggy mind and losing train of thought and word recall. After three months of waiting for side effects to ease I came off Topiramate.

Oh I forgot to mention I also used Topiramate (not for weight management) and I could never be persuaded to return to it ever again. The neurological side effects aren’t worth it.

I would consult with your weight management team to see what they think.

I was prescribed topamax in 2008 when I when I was being treated for severe post partum depression. I was put on zoloft and I ended up gaining like 16 pounds in a month on it and after almost losing my mind over that, my psychiatrist agreed that I was ‘too heavy for a young lady’ (🙄) and put me on the topamax because weight loss was a side effect. I ended up having every side effect except weight loss.

I do know that in the last few years they have created a weight loss drug called Qsymia which is topmirate with phentermine.

Thank you! I will talk to my provider about that and see if that is an option.

I recently stopped taking Topomax, but it was great while I was on it. Long-term, the appetite efficacy wanes but ideally good habits support weight maintenance.
