Hello out there! I had the sleeve done 6 years ago. It was successful but I have a hiatal hernia and was recently told that the best way to fix it, that makes it actually go away, is to convert the gastric bypass. Wish I had known the sleeve was not the best procedure for someone with an existing HH. Has anyone experienced this and how was your outcome?

Many surgeons repair the hernia during the sleeve surgery. Was there a reason your surgeon didn’t? Of course once you’ve had one hernia there’s always a chance of it recurring. Are they doing a bypass to reduce your risk of a recurrence versus just repairing the hernia alone?

Thanks for your reply. Yes it was repaired during the surgery but when I woke up I was really sick from the anesthesia and as a result of throwing up, it didn’t hold.

Fixed the hernia, did the bypass, happier than a pig in slop. I had medical issues (multiple), so I'm in a different category than almost all here. I was obese.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The surgeon and his staff I got this time are the absolute bomb. I couldn't ask for better.

Just switched from the sleeve to bypass. I had a hh the first surgeon didn’t fix. Been in constant pain for 5 years with ulcers and major gerd. Now with bypass surgery last weekend already I can drink with out hurting. I’m excited to experience life again after 5 years of misery. The bypass is the way to go.

I just had a sleeve to bypass 3 weeks ago 23lbs down so far.

I had the VSG in 12/23. I chose the VSG over the bypass due to wanting to have children and fearing malnutrition during pregnancy. I had a hh that they didn't tell me about and didn't repair during the surgery (no clue why). I've had GERD since the surgery (never had it prior), so we decided to try doing a hh repair to see if that would help. I had the repair done about a month ago and the GERD is coming back with a vengeance. I think I will need to convert to a bypass, but I want to wait until after having children (hopefully soon!). Major bummer, but I still don't regret doing the VSG.

I’m having RNY (sleeve to bypass) this Friday.. I’ve also been having similar issues (GERD.. reflux.. Barrett’s esophagus)

I was originally sleeved back in September of 2015 (SW was 270 LW was 140). Since that I’ve had children plus life has happened, so my surgeon recommended bypass due to weight regain and the mentioned issues.

I’m hoping he’ll be able to fix my hiatal hernia and clear me of any old scar tissue while I’m under during surgery.

Reading these comments gives me hope because I’m such a nervous wreck.

I am also wondering about the amount of weight loss going from the sleeve to the bypass, as well as how well it has been in stopping the GERD for people.
