Gummy Vitamins/ibuprofen

Recommended Posts

Just curious if anyone is taking a Gummy Vitamin after surgery?? If so, any side effects from it?

Met with my dietitian and she said before my surgery I need to wean myself off vitamin gummies. Im guessing it must cause issues maybe?

She also said ibuprofen is a no no after surgery. I take ibuprofen for knee pain when the weather changes or generalized knee pain.

What is a good replacement

gummies supposedly have fewer Vitamins in them other forms of multis. Most surgeons tell you not to take them.

ibuprofen (and all NSAIDs) have been "banned" for gastric bypass patients for years because they can cause ulcers. But more and more surgeons are now telling their sleeve patients not to take them, either. I take Tylenol instead now.

Do you find the Tylenol helps just as well as the ibuprofen?

I guess its just another thing to wean myself off of before surgery 😁

Did you require any pain meds after your surgery? Or was it still tylenol?

@catwoman7 has it exactly right on the NSAIDs—Aleve is right out, too.

My bariatric Vitamins literally were gummies. I mentioned it to my surgeon and he said just chew it thoroughly ("enjoy that artificial berry flavor from the New Jersey Turnpike," were his exact words). As long as the amounts of each on the back were what he wanted, he didn't care. No issues with gummies.

I was also told no gummies post surgery. Never asked why. And definitely no nsaids. I used to take alieve for sinus headaches which I get infrequently, but now I take actual allergy medication which works as well. Tylenol just doesn’t seem to work for me except as a fever reducer. It does work for some people though so don’t rule it out. My mom swears by it.

pre-surgery I never thought Tylenol did much for me, but actually, it does. I mostly take it for headaches, but oddly, I rarely get them anymore.

I had pretty much zero pain after surgery. They sent me home with pain meds which I never even bothered to open. I think I might have taken Tylenol the first couple of days, though (I can't really remember since it's been a few years). Pain with these surgeries is really across the board - some people have none, some people have a lot. Most people seem to have little to none, though. But if you're one of the unfortunate ones who has pain with this surgery, you'll have the pain meds - just take them as directed to keep on top of it, and it should be pretty manageable.

Since we are on the topic of vitamins.....now that I know I must switch what Im taking (gummy vitamins), what Multivitamin seems to be the most prescribed/suggested? any issues with any you have tried like not being able to keep them down or taste of the chewable kind? Are you able to swallow big pills with such small amounts of Water?

Honestly, I only had to take little baby sips for a few days. I could take Water no problem after that. Now I do split my supplements into a couple of "rounds" (at least until I get those Vitamins that @lizonaplane recommended!) because the amount of water I need to take that many pills does fill my pouch.

I take Pro Care health and my labs were great with them. They are truly a one a day Vitamin and lower cost than some of the comparable ones. Make sure to choose the one with Iron.

Update: I've started getting a bit nauseous from the ProCare Health but I think I just need to take them with food. Apparently Vitamins absorb better with food anyway.

Our surgery center said no gummies. I was supposed to take the chewable vitamins for a month after surgery but I couldn't stand them so I switched to the capsules after two weeks and I had no issues (until I started getting nauseous a few days ago).

You definitely need to take them with something in your belly. I take mine in the morning, along with my other rx’s, with a Protein Shake and one day I took it early in that process (hadn’t drank much of The shake) and I vomited it all up. I started taking it with the last sip of the shake and I haven’t had any Issues. I have read on here some people have to have actual food though. I guess it just depends on your sensitivity to Vitamins. But definitely need to take it with something. It’s horrible coming back up. I never want to taste that again 🤢

What are you all drinking after gastric sleeve surgery?

Crystal light. I like the fruit punch but it is just a tad too sweet so I mix it with the strawberry watermelon one that’s Walmart brand.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
