Surgery date 2/4

Hi everybody I am new here, and just had surgery on Tuesday, 4 February. I’ve already made some mistakes such as weighing myself every day, which has been very discouraging and now know not to continue. I am struggling a lot with eating. Everything I eat tastes so odd to me. The protein shakes are all entirely too sweet, the broth‘s taste too salty and overall nothing sounds appealing or appetizing. The only thing I’m doing fairly well at is drinking, but admittedly not as much as I should be. The hardest part for me has been the emotional roller coaster I did not expect. I try to get up and walk, but I feel so tired and frankly a little sad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It does get better. Have you tried watering down the protein shakes? They also make protein water, but that may be too sweet as well. This site has fruit flavored protein mixes that are pretty good. I have tried the orange and like it. They also make unflavored protein powder which you can mix into things you can stand to drink. I got a nice double walled cup in the hospital and I carry it everywhere. It holds 18 oz and has markings for every ounce and that makes it easy to track how much water I have drank.

I went from a size 22 to a size 12. I thought early in that there was no way was going to lose a lot f weight and the out of no where the weight fell off.

Hang in there

yes - my sense of taste got more intense for awhile - sweet things tasted sweeter - spicy things tasted spicier. Mine has been back to normal for a long time now - not sure if it reverted to what it was pre-surgery, or if I just got used to it.

many companies make unflavored protein powder - or as someone said, there are fruit-flavored ones (Syntrax, for one, makes them). Also, Unjury makes a chicken broth flavored one.

as for emotions, I didn't have this issue because I was post-menopausal when I had surgery, but from what I understand, estrogen is stored in fat cells, and it's released during rapid weight loss. So a lot of women have emotional swings - or irregular periods - during the first few weeks or months after WLS. Those normalize after awhile too, though

I just had mine on feb 4th as well. I am having a hard time eating and I feel so weak and tired. It’s nice being on the all liquid portion because I am liking strained cream of mushroom soup. I am waiting for day 7 to have sugar free pudding cause it feels like it will be too thick for my tiny stomach. I feel so thirsty and all I want to do is pound back an entire bottle of water. I was so thirsty yesterday that I paid 8 dollars for a bottle of water .. insane, right? I also find drinking water makes me burp where cream of mushroom soup seems easier to get down. I think it’s because I keep trying to drink more than my stomach will allow. Oddly, I’m sipping so it’s not like I’m guzzling. I can’t wait until puréed stage! I haven’t weighed myself since August so I don’t know how I’m doing in that regard. I had my surgeon write it down and seal it in an envelope so I can open March 1st. Maybe do that? It might help :). We can do this .. we really don’t have a choice which is awesome! I can’t wait to be skinny!!!! Advice .. or ideas more suiting as I’m in the exact same spot as you .. I might try warming my protein shake to make it a hot chocolate . I have no idea if it will work :). I’m so glad the surgery is done and now it’s all uphill :)
Oh, I forgot to say.. you are more than welcome to email me and we exchange ideas and progress:)

I do the hot shakes sometimes but you cant put the hot water in a bullet type blender, the lid explodes off. you can put it in a full size blender with the circle part of the lid off or blend the shake with cold water and then microwave.

Thanks so much everyone! The last couple of days have gotten better. My surgeon let me move to pureed food and that has helped a ton! I can’t do any of the baby food or any of that, I just mash up my stuff and it’s been great! I’ve been doing egg salad, tuna, and soup. I can’t stomach the shakes so I load up on protein everywhere else.

Really? What did you do the first 3 weeks?

Have you tried CHIKE brand protein meal replacement powder? It is my favorite, I get the Banana Magic and it's not too sweet and not thick. I mix it with water plus it has 48 grams of protein!
