Hello everyone! I'm in the beginning process of this journey and i've already ran into a road bump. (dr didn't put proper info on refer so got a call saying I didnt meet guidelines thankfully I asked what I didn't meet and explained it must have been a typo error.) anywho, I am trying to find out what tests everyone had to do prior to surgery. which ones are required ect if it helps im going to uf and shands in Gainesville once my pcp fixes the errors on refer but figured since they require you to do test before you can schedule surgery why not get ahead and get most of it done before my consult with dr's.

I had to have an endoscopy within the last 2 yrs, psych evaluation(had to be an actual Psychiatrist, not a counselor), 6 months physician assisted diet, sleep study(since I showed a mild sleep apnea, I had to get on the cpap machine and show compliance for 30 days) and meet with a nutritionist. These were all insurance requirements except the cpap compliance which is required by my surgeon/anesthesiologist.

in addition to the tests the above poster listed, I had to have a nuclear stress test since I was over 50 (my surgeon required it of all patients over age 50 or younger people who'd had a history of heart issues)

I had to do an h pylori test. I had already had test results from an endoscopy a few years ago. I did a psych eval. I had to get clearances from my PCP, cardiologist, and pulmonologist.

No Endoscopy or Sleep Study. We really had no testing at all just 6 months PCP visits, Nutritionist Visits, Psych Eval. Then sometime week afternext we have bloodwork and a chest xray.

I wasn't sure if it varies from patient to patient. my S-N-L said on the paperwork given to her they require an ekg, something about a breath test and a dye test. not sure what she means by the dye test as it can be multiple things. And do the visit with PCP have to be back to back or does it just have to be within the last year. example I will see my pcp 2 times this month regarding weight loss 6/5 and 6/19 will those both count or will they only be considered one?

Everybody has a difference requirement for there insurance company and/or surgeon team. Before I even meet my surgeon, I had a upper endoscopy, HIDA scan, gi nutrition e val, nut e valve, gi doc saying what I needed for surgery and his PA backing up his claim with a PLAN B, my pcp cleared me. The only things that I needed was a sleep study, 24 hr ph test, gastro empty stomach test, blood work, ultrasound, pulm doc clearence, ekg and physical with chest x ray. But, my surgeon team turn in all my paperwork before I had my 24 hr Ph test, ultrasound and sleep study and I was still approved by Cigna. Hope you get everything approve. I am not doing this for weight loss like everybody else on here... I am doing it to help my gastroparesis and GERD to go away.

Like others have mentioned....everyone has different requirements. I had to have:

-A letter of support from a healthcare provider

-Documentation of previous physician supervised weight loss

-A psych clearance

-An Upper GI study

That's it! I really didn't have a whole lot to do since my BMI is over 40. I had to have pre-op labs and a meeting with anesthesiology this week as my surgery is in 5 days. Good luck to you!

According to my requirements, those visits would be considered as one. I had to have 6 consecutive monthly visits.

I guess the breath test is for H. Pylori but no idea about the dye test.

I didn’t need to do any tests for insurance purposes. My surgeon required a few blood tests in the weeks before op. That was it.
