I’m on the last stage and just waiting for my surgery date, at my last visit with the consultant he asked me which surgery I was opting for
I was always opting for the sleeve and then decided on the bypass, can anyone tell me if they have had the same struggle with this decision and why you chose either the bypass or sleeve?
I’m so confused and can change my mind as late as going into the operating room so as much info from everyone will help me make that decision

Choose RNY bypass if you want the GOLD standard of WLS w/ malabsorption which tends to be faster but some say the feeling of hunger *may* not be diminished nor have a great deal of restriction (compared to sleeve)

Choose VSG sleeve if you want steady weightloss with the *possibility* of greatly reduced hunger and strong initial restriction sensation w/ no malabsorption but some develop GERD in the future

I chose the sleeve, mostly because i was self pay without insurance, however the sleeve does wonders. I liked the idea that the sleeve meant that my body functions would be the least invasive and function normally. There is a lot of restriction with the sleeve.

from what i have heard, the bypass should be for those with comorbidities besides the weight loss. I was lucky and didnt have anything but weight loss to deal with. The other thing i heard was some that get the sleeve have to be revised to bypass depending on how much weight you have to lose.

You really need to weigh all the options and make the best decision for you. What is right for one, may not be right for another.

Hey, I had the sleeve 2016,no complications from the surgery or recovery process. But my Reflux disease has gotten much worse because of it.My gastrointestinal doctor says I should of had the complete bypass. So my bariatric surgeon now agrees as instead of taking 2 pills a day for reflux disease I am now taking 10 pills a day.
Am currently waiting for approval from insurance company to get the big surgery.

I had the sleeve Sept '17 and woke up from the surgery starving - I was just hungry the whole time with it.

Had Bypass surgery Feb '19 and I have not felt hungry.

I opted for the sleeve initially because I was scared of the finality of the RNY, but to be honest there was no need to be scared. I don't feel that different except that my hunger has lessened and I have a bit more restriction.

If you notice a lot of people end up converting from the band and or sleeve to the full bypass anyway so I would just go for the full bypass now

In the UK they have stopped doing the lap band and introduced a loop which is similar to the sleeve but I was always under the impression that the bypass was the most drastic out of all of them but I think they all carry their own risks
I have told my consultant that I’m going for the bypass anyway

There's a few different versions of a bypass available from loop to Ds to mini bypass but the most common and best one seems to be RNY BYPASS...

You'll find many ppl being converted from sleeve to bypass anyway bypass may be more invasive but it's overall the best for better weight loss and long term loss and also very good for those with diabetes type 2...

I've opted for bypass because it's more restrictive and it does change your metabolism for the better.

The sleeve was originally designed as half an operation which could later be finished off with a DS but since then RNY BYPASS has taken over as the gold standard with years of success behind it! Google is your friend do your research!

I saw way too many revisions from sleeve to bypass. I would never choose a sleeve

Exactly^ I see the SLEEVE as half an operation! Bypass goes further to help with long term maintenance!

Hi there, I am very glad that I decided on the bypass as I too have noticed quite a few people ending up having the bypass after the sleeve op. What I will say, though, is that I do still feel hunger but am able to control it more and so I am keeping to what I must do. It has been a sharp learning curve in terms of what kinds of food I can eat at different stages as my body adjusts and the process is ongoing. This is hard work but worth it in the long run. The worst bit has definitely been a bit of the ‘dumping syndrome’ and getting some food stuck at the pouch opening but I now know what to do to avoid these occasions. I am so glad I had bought several books on bariatric Surgery and the bypass as they have been very helpful indeed. This forum is great too but I would love to meet some people here in North Devon in a group setting as well so we can discuss different things. This kind of thing gives reassurance from concerns.

I got my RNY surgery on April 1st. Im very heavy and I'm short so thats what I needed for optimum weight loss. My bariatric surgeon told me that they do tons of sleeve to bypass surgeries because the sleeves fail for multiple reasons. My sister in law got the sleeve 2 years ago and had major complications with strictures.

I had the sleeve in 2017 but it did nothing to curb my hunger. Im hungry all the time. Im thinking of getting the revision to mini bypass

I knew I wanted bypass because it has the malabsorption component and the deterrence of dumping syndrome. My sleeve friend can still eat whatever carbs/sugar he wants and not risk feeling ill. I like having the negative reinforcement to deter me from straying. Also... acid reflux. Totally gone since bypass, but can get really bad with the sleeve.

I had bypass for the same reasons as Mousecat88. I have or had a sweet tooth and being afraid of dumping will keep me on the straight and narrow. I also had reflux.

Got my sleeve done in april 30. 2019
I am starting to experience some GERD but i think it is due to me trying new foods. I am still in the liquid stage of my diet but i am fully happy with my sleeve. My surgeon took out 85% of my stomach, so i will have the most optimal weightloss.
