First few weeks post op

Recommended Posts

Just curious what to expect for the first 2-3 weeks post-op. I'm day 2 post-op, still sore and still have gas pains from surgery, but I'm hoping every day will get better! I'm so afraid to drink too much Water or Protein Shakes and then get sick, but I want to make sure I'm hydrated.

I have a desk job and was planning on going back on Monday which will be one week post-op. Am I crazy to think that? Am i going to feel OK just after a week's time of rest at home?

Just wondering how everyone else's experience was :)

We're all different and will heal at our own pace but still having gas pains and soreness is quite normally at 2 days post op. Keep walking and taking your pain medication as and when you need it 😊 Peppermint tea is supposed to be good for helping with gas.

I went back to work after 4 weeks but I have a fairly active job. Just be aware that your energy levels may drop and it's completely different sitting at a desk at work needing to concerntrate compared to sitting at home relaxing. All I can suggest is to see how you feel, but if you're still sore and on pain meds I wouldn't recommend it.

Just keep sipping little and often, it feels impossible to get fluids in during the early days. I was so worried about dehydration etc but you will get better each day.

You might be okay at your desk job, but it's pushing it at a week. Two weeks would be better if you could manage it. You'll feel a little tired by the end of the day. It's different from sitting at home. Remember, you just had a major operation.

You will be sore for a bit. O had surgery on 1/15/19 and back to my desk job on 1/21/19. Even though it's a desk job, it forced me to get up and walk around. Which I needed. I'm just starting feeling hungry. I'm averaging about 800 calories a day and about 80 grams of Protein.

I work in the medical field and tell patients to go back to work mid week if they are able to. Then you can just get through a few days, rest over the weekend and then go the full 5 days.

Here's some of my experiences post-gastric sleeve! Mine was back on Jan. 15th, so it's not been too long for me.

For me, I had the gas pains off and on for about a week or so. They came and went, and sometimes they were quite bad while at other times I barely noticed. I even ended up going back to the emergency room after having pains between my shoulder blades/left shoulder area that were severe (and it was only gas, apparently.) The soreness of the wounds didn't last too long overall, maybe a week? One of my wounds did get a little infected, and I had to go back to the doctor to get some antibiotics, but it seems to be just fine now.

Also about the gas pains, people say to walk a lot and that it helps. It didn't seem to have much of an effect for me, unfortunately, but I know it helps many others, so you could give that a try if you're able! That said, I still did walk as much as I could, since it lessens your chances of developing any kind of blood clot post-surgery.

Nausea is something I've had to deal with quite a bit post-surgery as well, and it happens for a variety of reasons. I've discovered that when I take certain combinations of medicines, it makes me nauseous, and I will start dry heaving. I don't seem to be able to physically vomit anymore, even after eating. Only one time did a tiny bit of bile come up, but otherwise.. Just awful, horrible dry heaving. I also get nauseous after eating certain foods that my body no longer agrees with. I also get nauseous drinking plain Water for some reason, and I have read that this is common (and often helped by just flavouring it.)

My suggestion is that you might want to take the full amount of time you're given to recover, instead of going back to work right away (if you can afford to do that.) At least, that's what I would do, since for me, at least.. Some days after I felt absolutely miserable and would not have wanted to do any kind of activity save for resting in bed. If you truly feel like you're good to go though, then do it! (Ultimately, it's up to you and how you feel!)

I hope this helps! I'm not a veteran here, but feel free to ask any questions, and I'll answer to the best of my ability!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
