Hi all. I've been banded since 2005, lost 100 lbs the first year then stopped due to multiple mechanical issues. I had the Port replaced, then the tube replaced, and I never got back to that sweet spot and floated on 20 lbs fluctuations for the next 5 years. I then got pregnant and my band disconnected at month 4. I remember the feeling of my band unfilling completely and thought "oh sh*t." I gained 60 lbs in 6 months, had a new band replaced in feb 2013, then proceded to get myself pregnant again before my first fill in May.

Well that that baby is now 3 and I am gaining. I've gotten fills and lost 30 lbs but then suddenly had night time regurgitation, unable to eat, swollen throat. They unfilled me and refilled me due to slippage. This new band is lenient and unpredictable and now I've developed terrible reflux that medications aren't helping.

I'm eating mindlessly again and can't get control. I can't get filled until I get the gerd under control. I've gone up 30 lbs and now am at a net overall loss of 40 lbs. I am not happy.

Its been 12 years, three revisions. I am considering the sleeve but am concerned my issues with gerd will make me a bypass candidate. Does anyone have a similar experience to share?

i found a well respected and credentialed hospital and am starting the process to get a local doc to evaluate me for revision. I am ready to do what it takes but sleeve seems much more desirable for many reasons. I just want the hunger gone or muted. I was free from the mental noise of food for a good while and I made good choices. I can't get back there on my own.

I thnk RNY is better after the band, especially for someone that had one as long as you with slippage.

The hunger goes away but not forever and if you have damage and GERD, the sleeve is just too risky.

I'm sure a Dr can assess you and tell you better.

Good luck

A revision won't cure mindless eating (I guess you're already well aware of this) but it can help with reflux issues. I got a revision to bypass myself and reflux issues got way better.

If you're having reflux issues a surgeon will usually advice against a sleeve.

You're right about mindless eating. Poor choice of words - I just never feel satisfied like I did at the right fill with my first band so I'm constantly fighting with myself against eating. I liked the feeling of fullness after eating small amounts. I got used to listening to my body and now we are in the wrong cycle of listening...lol it's lying to me!

I'm interested in whatever helps me. Thank you for your reply.

I would definitely talk to your doctor about what may be the best option for you. I had. And slippage and revised to the sleeve. I did have some reflux related to the slipped band. Post revision, I have none but I think my issue was solely the band being slipped and not gerd.

Well I had my barium swallow, way slipped, and yesterday had the band unfilled. I feel a million times better already. Cough is gone, slept without being propped up.

Also found out my insurance will cover band to sleeve!!! Waiting to hear back about pre-cert and I'm getting in line. I've been reading everything I can about the sleeve.

I was banded in 2011 and lost 80 pounds never quite got to my goal weight before I started having problems. Throwing up multiple times daily, bad acid reflux to the point I was needing 8 pillows to prop me up to sleep, frustrated. I was too tight at one point from the swelling from vomiting so much, that I had to get all Fluid removed emergently so I could swallow my own saliva.

I ended up getting all fluid removed and esophageal manometry done. I have a separate post about that experience. The manometry showed I had a slip. That was the documentation I needed in order to get a revision for mybinsurance to cover my revision. There needs to be documentation to support another surgery need. Unless you are cash pay.

I initially wanted sleeve because I thought it was the best option....however after speaking with my surgeon, he told me that I would more than likely have problems with severe reflux due to the pressure from the sleeve and since I was already miserable from the severe reflux I had, I wasn't about to have to deal with any more. I also have several friends who had sleeve done and have significant regain with reflux issues.

He said revising to RNY would resolve reflux and I wouldn't ever have to deal with that issue. I decided that was the best choice for me. I was revised to RNY back in 2015 and SO Happy! No reflux which is awesome! I can eat spicier foods again. I have lost a total of 125 pounds and at my goal weight of 175. I am also a Zumba Instructor and teach Zumba 4 days per week. I keep my Protein first, then veggies and fruit. I take my Vitamins daily and actually have not been sick as much either since revision. I have not had any issues. Love my RNY ❤FB_IMG_1490817860415.thumb.jpg.760a96f63769408bd765204d6735a3f5.jpg I only wished I had done RNY to start with. Do your homework, ask questions and decide what is right for you. Best of luck to you!

You look amazing!! Great job! I'm waiting to hear from my surgeon this week, I'm approved for revision, just want to see the pre cert requirements and then I get my date. At this point I'll take sleeve or bypass!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
