Medications and surgery types

Recommended Posts

So I take Wellbutrin, Abilify, Adderall, Ambien and pain meds for chronic back issues. Will any of these be effected by the different surgeries? None of them are ER if that makes a difference.

If you otherwise qualify for the sleeve, it is a good one that doesn't interfere with medication absorption.

Do you currently have heartburn?

If any of these are nsaids you need to check with your surgeon about taking them after surgery. I was told to wait about 3 months before taking any nsaids.. Even to this day 14 months post op I have not taken them. The Doctor gave me a different pain med a few months before surgery that is not an nsaid and that is what I am still taking.

Unfortunately I do but it's not as bad as it used to be.

I had the sleeve and I could take pills right after surgery. I am 11 months out and am told to never take nsaids though. I am on extended release Welbutrin, Trileptal, Latuda, Prilosec, Methotrexate, Folic acid, and now all my Multivitamins.

It's a tough call if someone has heartburn, but requires regular meds. Definitely sit down with your doc to discuss the best plan.

Sometimes the sleeve doesn't affect heartburn, or could make it better. But sometimes it makes things much worse.

An option would be to start with the sleeve with the possibility of a conversion later if things go badly. But then, if that is a possibility, then why not start with the bypass and be done with it?

I'm just thinking aloud..

Your surgeon will know the best procedure for you with those specific meds and your history. But feel confident that either way you go, you will do great!

My doctor told me I could take my Celebrex 2x a week and it is a nsaid. Just to remove it from it's capsule and mix in some applesauce. It's not pleasant, but have to have it for my ankles to be able to walk. It really is up to the particular surgeon you have.

Had VSG 8/23/16. Was switched to Meloxicam for severe arthritis in my knees prior to surgery and continued to take it after surgery with the blessing of my orthopedic and my bariatric surgeon. Had no trouble taking Singulair, Protonix daily or Ambien as needed after surgery, but often had to space taking my pills right after surgery. Take 1 small pill -- sip sip sip. Wait 10 minutes. Take another pill, sip sip sip, etc. Now, I swallow the whole handful at once like before.

I've even had to be on prednisone for my asthma with no ill effects.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
