Hello all!

I am considering the sleeve. I'm wondering for those who take birth control what affected did the surgery have? Did you have to change your method? What did you take before surgery and what are you taking now? I would love some insight.

I am on the pill

I switched to nexoplan implant a few months ago. Looking to have surgery in May or June. I did that for these reasons. 1: nexoplan does not have estrogen so it is a lower stroke risk from higher BMI people. 2: I know I don't want to get pregnant for the weightloss period of 1-2 years. 3: I don't have to remember anything daily or monthly 4:it lasts a maximum of 3 years and it is removable when ever I choose.

Added benefit for me: I have not had a period since it was put in, though I heard it can take a little bit for your body to get used to it. It depends on the person.

That's awesome! I am on the pill because I do plan on getting pregnant in a year or so. I hate taking pills but I do it lol.

Before surgery I was on the Nuvaring. I was sleeved on 3/30. I just switched and got the Mirena on 4/21. Mostly because I know that with rapid weight loss, I'll become more fertile and I wanted to ensure that I won't get pregnant anytime soon. I'm good to go for the next 6 years! Also, lists of times with the Mirena, cycles lessen or stop completely. Looking forward to that!

I can not wait to give my daughter a sibling infertility was a driving factor in my decision to get WLS. My fertility was affected by the obesity and I was almost prediabetic.

I have not taken birth control since 2010. Prior I was always on the pill and it managed my periods perfectly. Between 2010 and 2015 I had 4 pregnancies, two ending in miscarriage and 2 full term and decided after struggling with infertility, multiple pregnancy loss and a scary pregnancy with my daughter to tie my tubes which was done in July of 2015.

That being said since surgery my cycle has spiraled out of control, I will be going on Mirena with my next cycle as my OBGYN thinks it will manage my periods. I really hope this does because two weeks of heavy bleeding each month is not how I want to live.

It never affected me.

I've been thinking of an iud or going back on pills. Im leaning towards iud. Im just scared it can become misplaced during sex or something. Or if my partner can feel it. That and the cramping and the implantation of device kills. Not looking forward to that.

I've had the paragard iud for almost 5 years now. The insertion was a little uncomfortable but really didn't hurt and was not bad at all. I honestly could almost completely forget that it's there. The one complaint is that because it doesn't change your hormones I have really really heavy periods. I believe Mirena that does have a hormonal component would control that. Overall though I just deal with the periods and because I'm married and already have 2 kids its nice to have something I don't have to think about at all. Due to have my surgery this summer so I'm not sure if anything will change with it afterwards!

The pharmacist that saw me in the hospital post surgery didn't encourage pills. She said they wouldn't be able to cycle in the stomach as long as it needs to so it wouldn't be as affective. I feel like that makes sense but im probably just going to look up different iuds. Thanks for your input. It made me feel a bit better.

Nexplanon implant for me, all woman of CB age must be on birth control before surgery for the obvious reason - it can be dangerous to fall pregnant within 18 months of having surgery.

No issues with mine now and no periods either.

I haven't heard that all women of CB age need to be on BC prior and post surgery - I'm not on birth control, am 32, and was never told I needed to be. I've completed all preop requirements and will call today to discuss submitting docs to insurance and scheduling surgery. I would hope I would have been told by now about needing to be on BC! Maybe it's just a norm for most but not all.

I was not on any birth control (my tubes are tied) and my team did not ask or say I needed to be on anything. When they did my medication list they didn't mention anything that I wasn't taking a birth control and still tested me for pregnancy in the hospital so I don't know if they actually read my medical chart to see my tubes were tied.

My doctor is requiring that I go off the pill for a month prior and a month after surgery. Then recommend a secondary method (condoms) for the first year post-op. Basically said that fertility will spike and hormones will be all over the place so pill may not be as effective in the first year.
