Why does bad food slide through?

Recommended Posts

Ok...I have read more than once that people can eat around their sleeve or that bad foods slide right through. I don't understand how this is possible...so can someone explain why?

I understand Protein takes longer to digest...but not sure about the carb and sugar items? Just curious. I am still pre-op and am just learning.

It's the same with most foods. If you eat ice cream, there is nothing there to stop it because it's liquid, same with soda. You have to make the conscience decision not to 'cheat' because you are only cheating yourself. This isn't an easy process and it's not a quick fix. You will get out of it what you put into it. Remember, you can stretch your stomach back out if you eat things you aren't supposed to and then where will you be? Things to think about.

Cake, bread, Pasta, Rice, Soft candy, Ice Cream all literally slide down easily. They also are so liquid or compressible that they also don't 'fill' you up long, leaving you wanting more and Sugar is addicting, MSG is addicting..you can't even go get gas without going thru the Gauntlet of High Processed food. It is almost an unwinnable battle, then get your brain involved..it is an addicted little bitch (everyone, not just overweight people). Never met a person who got obese on lean meats and veggies. :)

Because of the way the pyloric valve works. The pyloric valve sits at the bottom of your stomach and it is what regulates passage of food into the intestines. If you put food that is tough to digest in your stomach, it will close up so that your stomach can get in extra digestion time with it before it goes to the intestines. Food that is hard to digest is the kind of thing that is chewy, fibrous, tough, or high Protein. So, things like lean meat and green veggies cause the pyloric valve to close up and food to stay inside your stomach for longer, leading to a feeling of fullness or satiety. Food that is easy to digest -- high carb food with little Fiber, like highly processed grain-based foods and sweets, do not cause the pyloric valve to close up. They "slide" right through the open valve leading you to feel like you are still hungry and can just eat more and more.

Picture bread or potato chips in a class of Water. They practically dissolve. meat doesn't breakdown to that degree and that quickly. Also. If you take a bag of potato chips or bread and crush and compact them you can still hold a lot of calories.

Beer. Do you know why beer goes through you even faster than Water? Because it doesn't have to stop to change color! :P

Thank you all...this makes a lot of sense. I just want to ensure I am aware of everything and avoid any slippery slopes

You are asking good questions. The slippery slope is within us. We just have to be careful what we put on it.

Picture this.

Throw a few ounces of steak or chicken in the blender with a few teaspoons of Water and give it a whirl. When you dump it out, you will most likely still have about the same amount in VOLUME.

Now, take a few ounces of cheetos, chips, Cookies, crackers, chocolate, etc. Add a few teaspoons of Water and again, give it a whirl. Your volume is decreased drastically.

Which keeps you full longer and which do you imagine slides through faster?

:)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
