6 weeks post op, feeling a little discouraged

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on the first week of june.

So far, I've lost 28 pounds, and I'm quite happy with it.

I'm 25 years old, have lots of friends and an active social life. I'm worried I will never be able to go to restaurants again or have some drinks with my friends.

I'm eating soft foods, no carbs (following my doctor's orders), very little portions, but I still feel nauseous every time I eat something... it's making me feel a little bit depressed and wonder if my condition is going to improve?

I do not want to tell everyone about my procedure, because I don't feel like having to justify it to everyone I know... My question here is, would I ever be able to eat "normal" again (I understand about the portions, and I really want to take care of me eating the right food) but I also want to know If I'll ever be able to go out again and have fun without being nauseous or being worried about the menu?

Thanks!

I'm only 4 weeks out, so I haven't experienced "normal" yet - but all of my reading and research tells me that yes, you will be able to eat just about anything you want to. Most vets talk about doing so at 18 months+, though I believe many say they could have as early as 9-10 months out, they just chose not to because they were still in the losing phase.

The time right after surgery is not our "new normal".

I am sorry you are feeling nauseated when you eat. I am 3 weeks out and just began soft foods. My surgeon said to make each bite no larger than a dime, chew well then swallow. Wait a little before having another one. He said that nausea is usually caused by eating too fast or too large a bite. An entire meal should take 20 to 30 minutes right now. I just finished my first scrambled egg and it took me 25 minutes to eat it. No problems.

Try that and see how you do. I wanted to eat faster but am testing everything in this phase. You will be able to go out to restaurants. Check the menu out before you go so you can plan ahead. I have already done so and have several meals coming up this weekend out with friends.

I'm 11 weeks / 3 months post op and I can say that at this point I've tried everything I've craved. I do track every bite. I don't dare to try bread, Pasta, tortillas or rice. I just feel it will be very heavy for me and I'd rather pass. I'm not a alcohol drinker so that's no biggy for me. I feel very normal with family and friends just takes me longer to eat a tiny plate/bites (I've adapted very well to my sleeve) loving the results.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
