The great straw debate!

  • Popular Post

Finally had my surgery on 5/25, back home and doing good so far. Had one nice chuckle while I was being poked and prodded during my 3 day hospital stay. Had my surgery at OSU (Go BUCKS!). Due to heart problems and a couple of the meds I was on, my stay was in the heart step down unit, instead of the bariatric wing. My surgeon came to see me each day, along with a cardiology team, and nutritionists. This is where it gave me a chuckle...

After seeing a few different "straw topics" get posted in the past few weeks, I had asked my surgeon about it during my pre op. He said that he has no problem with his patients using a straw, and that excess air would not stretch out the sleeve. As I was taking my meds on Fri (using a straw to sip water), my surgeon and the cardiologist came in. A couple of minutes latter the nutritionist and bariatric counselor came in. She saw me sipping Water to take my meds and immediately told me I could not be using a straw. From there it was a rehash of every post I had read on here, between the 4 of them.

FYI, my surgeon and cardiologist won out.

I blow bubbles before i sip through my straw. Because I'm jiggy like that.

I do this all the time. And it makes me giggle. Because I'm childish like that! :D

I am drinking Twisted Tea from a straw right this very minute. AND eating popcorn. I have no doubt I will burst into flames at any moment so I'm sure this is my last post. It's been nice knowing you all.....

I'm just having a flashback to Feb 26 last year...

That was the day after my op...

The surgeon comes in and checks me out...

He asks what I had for Breakfast...

I said, "Nothing.."

THE SURGEON goes to the fridge and gets me a chocolate milk...

HE TAKES THE STRAW, breaks the little plastic seal on the milks and just slides the straw right in there...

He then hands the drink to me and says "Nice and slow. Drink it over about half an hour.."

The surgeon gave me a straw...

Straws are good..

The Defense rests, Your Honour...

Ladies,

At this point I'll no longer be taking part in this conversation...

While I have PLENTY to say, I'm afraid that a certain Forum Moderator with a 'lipstick' related nickname would relish the thought of banishing me for my use of inappropriateness...

So with that in mind, I will bid you both good day and withdraw from the discussion...

As always, prayers going "Manah manah - Do doo be-do-do"

Yeh, right my little marsupial pal. As if you would ever be scared!?! You would relish the idea of that certain moderator getting her mitts on you and giving you a good............................

Now, as for straws. If someone can explain the dynamics of a tube inserted and therefore immersed, into liquid, and that liquid is sucked directly into the gob, where does the air get a chance to sneak in? I'm no scientist but I can't see how all this supposed air enters one's stomach-if you get my drift. So, if any clever person who has a scientific degree out there can take me through the whole process and explain what goes on, I'd love to know. Please back up any statements with sources in the form of PROPER papers please, not just, my aunty's best friend's mother's second cousin once removed read it somewhere.......

Right, must go and make another cuppa. Might drink that with a........no, need to gulp tea!!!!!
