WLS and Eating Disorders

I am sharing this video even though it made me mad.

I was expecting it to be more helpful than it is based on the fact that the website that posted it is one that I normally respect.

Instead of helpful, I found it condescending and almost mean spirited: especially in bashing weight loss surgery and online communities.

What do you think?

What do you wish she would have said instead?

As someone who has had WLS and may still be struggling with food addictions, what kind of help do you need?

What, if anything, good did you learn from this video?

I admit, i didn't watch it. However, I do have something to say about eating disorders, mentally ill and WLS. There is a huge spectrum of issues and I think it is a big mistake to think we are all

  • I learned that if you are mentally ill, you are really screwed. And I would not use her as NUT. She said there wasn't any long term studies on success, and that's flat out not true. I really hate w

Bless her heart. She's the quintessential "dietitian" -- ex-sorority rush chairman, ex-cheerleader. And has always, always, always been skinny. Absolutely zero experience with overweight or obesi

I know this is an old thread. Just hope to get this topic going again.

Yes i went to an eating disorder clinic...Insurance would not cover.

Third year My bariatric professionals program view me as one of their most successful patients. What they don't understand Is I have disordered thinking around my weight loss I'm obsessive in my exercise ( exercise is viewed as a great thing in life) When you over exercise its becoming an issue.

The disordered thinking is driven by the fear of weight loss and being happy with the weight i'm at. I acknowledge that its preoccupying my thought and time. I am aware I push my workouts to the point of exhaustion. It's affects my blood sugar, I have brain fog, my hair loss continued. Sports injuries.

I feel I have to have control of this...If I let go of maintaining the way I do...I have weight gain.

When life get out of control I replaced going to food for comfort to going two plus hours to the gym.

I personally don't believe that it's possible to become heavy enough to qualify for WLS without an ED.

It's not uncommon that eating disorders change gear. Anorexics become bulimics. Anorexics become orthorexic and fitness obsessed (see websites on "recovered" anorexics who seem now simply obsessed with fitness and healthy eating instead of losing weight). People with COE or BED become bulimic.

EDs very often don't go away, even with therapy there are very high relapse rates.

Had my fair share of these as well. My shoulder is still bothering me.

Also obsession with "healthy eating" was quite bad for a whole while. I can feel the pendulum swinging in that direction again. I don't really have any red flags right now but something is different. My thoughts wander into this direction more often than usually.
