Liquid diet preop ?

I've been reading a lot about liquid diets prior to surgery. I'm kinda lost as to why I haven't been told this by my doctor. As far as I know its npo after midnight. Anyone out there that has not done a diet prior to surgery ? Should I ask my doctor if I should be doing one ? I have surgery on Dec.18th so there is time but is it necessary ??

  • I think it's a matter of the doctors preference. It's usually for the purpose of shrinking your liver. If you don't have to do it, consider yourself lucky cuz I have 6 days to go on mine (surgery dat

Well good luck!

My surgery is Wed and I had a salad yesterday!! I'm so nervous and feeling regretful. I'm afraid my surgeon is gonna go in and be like NOPE. I seriously need to join an OA in my area :(

It was mostly head hunger and I couldn't beat it... I'm gonna fail at this entire thing

The only advice I have about doing the pre op is keep to yourself as much as you can and keep busy. I haven't cooked for my family the whole time and I cry whenever they eat in front of me lol freaking pathetic. But it gets easier everyday. Days 1-3 are the hardest.

Hi. The first three days were horrible for me also. I had migraines....I guess from caffeine withdrawal.

eating a salad does not mean you are going to fail. It means you ate a salad. If you feel like you can't control your eating, maybe find a therapist? I tend to have the all or nothing attitude. Even when I have lost a lot of weight on a diet, there would be one day when I would "cheat" and then I felt like I had blown the whole thing and quickly regain the 70 or so pounds I had lost. I'm six weeks out from surgery. Right now I couldn't eat something bad for me without getting very sick. The liquid pre op diet is so hard! Maybe talk to your nutritionist if you are worried about the salad making you unable to have surgery.

I start mine in a week...I just stopped coffee pre pre op diet...the head ache is insane...but I rather do it now before I start the diet...

I get headaches as well and now I have to stop taking Excedrin migraine . I guess an ice pack will have to do.. Its the second best thing ????

My first day was the 7th and i did great for the first half of the day , then i went home and saw bbq chicken on the stove , with cheesy potatoes and i dropped off. The guilt was real , day two and day three were better and today is day four , i have the four Protein shakes per day along with 1 cup of raw veggies in the evening , at night i drink a cup of chicken broth.. then bed. The hardes part for me is the smell of food. It takes effort and its not easy at all, but i think of the goal am trying to reach and its keeps me on track . Oh, i stop cooking at home for my kids they are grown and can do it themselves... good luck everyone. You can do it.

I start my diet 12/26 and I will be ringing in the new year in Dallas. So that mean my family will be getting a lot of takeout. I'm wondering if I can get away with egg drop soup as a broth?

Only if you strain out the egg. That being said, if it's a one time thing, I personally don't see the harm. Post-op you are going to run into obstacles, the key is to acknowledge it, learn from it, and then get back on track.

Just my $0.02

I am on soft food meaning 2 shakes, and steemed vegetable and a protein.I got some miso broth and boiled some fish and that was my evening meal.

then all clear liquid for 3 days before surgery .

my surgeons plan is 3 weeks of no starches and then clear liquids for 2 days which i am so digging because the previous surgeon i was with the plan would have been 2 weeks protein shakes only so the fact that i can eat real food i am totally happy with

Same here...and it is still hard..going on my 3rd day...headaches,body aches,tired...all withdrawal ...from starches and sugars
