Liquid diet preop ?

I've been reading a lot about liquid diets prior to surgery. I'm kinda lost as to why I haven't been told this by my doctor. As far as I know its npo after midnight. Anyone out there that has not done a diet prior to surgery ? Should I ask my doctor if I should be doing one ? I have surgery on Dec.18th so there is time but is it necessary ??

  • I think it's a matter of the doctors preference. It's usually for the purpose of shrinking your liver. If you don't have to do it, consider yourself lucky cuz I have 6 days to go on mine (surgery dat

Headaches are part of detox.I am a migraine sufferer...Gave up caffeine a 2 weeks ago headaches for a week...This week I started pre op diet of protein shakes, steamed veggie and fish and plenty of water...3 days before surgery all clear liquids...

I gave up the caffeine about 1 1/2 months ago. It was awful at first. Thank goodness that part is done at least. The sugar is my next struggle.

This is my routine....I have to have strength All liquid is not going to work because I am hypoglycemic and on meds,He prescribes a soft food diet

2 to 4 shakes

You can have cottage cheese or non sugared Greek yogurt or high protein cream of wheat...must be watery. For dinner I have soup ( no lumps,no sugar)or steamed spinach in broth with a small piece of steamed fish in miso broth. The first 3 days I could literally die...I am approaching the 5 th day and ok...no headaches but body aches and sleepiness ...drinking as much water as I can.

I am in the process of trying different brands of protein shakes and powders....vega protein is out! Yuck...trie pure protein in the can...nice but.Isopure is a big deal now...I had the green tea flavor...this is definitely a keeper...loaded with protein...Its fantastic...This is like a prep period.

I couldn't do this pre op diet if I hadn't given up caffeine beforehand...the migraine would have been crazy and the ex derive would follow...and that's not good.

I started getting all the medical things I needed in March. Had an issue with insurance but that is now taken care of. I've has so longs to prepare. First I quite coffee, then soda. Soda was the hardest for me! I could no lie drink a two litter A day!!! I know how crazy that sounds now but I did. I'm vary proud that I've quit soda! :) but in all that time I feel I could have done more.

Nah...you are doing great...my mother is addicted to ginger ale...Soda and coffee are rough...but sugar is the hardest..Lohengrin is your surgery date?
